Everyday Pet Tips &Boarding TipsEveryday Tips Provide a good diet & take them to the vet regularly. Get them spayed or neutered, reducing overpopulation and offeringhealth and behavioral benefits. Make sure they get enough exercise and playtime. Be consistent with housetraining and obedience training, includingrewards for good behavior. Always keep current ID tags on your pet that include your phone number. Keep them socialized with people and other animals.Responsible Boarding Visit the boarding facility. Ask questions regarding your pet’s outsideactivity time, sleeping and feeding arrangements and pet interaction. Make sure you understand the fees for boarding and offered activities. Make sure your pet is current on all required vaccinations. Ask themanager or staff for details. Your pet should be free of all parasites and not have been exposed tocontagious diseases. To minimize the chance of a stomach upset, do not feed your dog for atleast 4 hours prior to boarding. Separation during boarding may produce stress, resulting in loweredresistance and temporary changes in behavior, so be sure to inform theboarding facility of any idiosyncracies or medical conditions your dog mayhave (history of epilepsy or fear of thunder, etc).Taking these steps will encourage a healthyand happy life for your pet!Boarding Tips courtesy of Margee Leigh from Pet Palswww.quadcityconnections.com17

Helpful TipsHearing Better:PositiveCommunicationStrategiesTo encourage easier & more positive communication, both the talker and listener must take part. For the normal hearing person: Get the other person’s attention. If necessary, introduce the topic. Turn off background noise...TV, radio, shutting a door, etc. Look at the other person and make sure they can see you. Smile and talk slowly. Shouting only distorts. “Chunk” your phrases.Example: “Today…I am going…to the store…to buy some…milk.” Rephrase rather than repeat. Say the message more slowly. Hearing aids do not replace normal hearing—they amplify your voiceand remove extra noise so you do not have to shout. They makelistening easier but not normal for the user. Encourage the other person to see their audiologist. If you are still havingproblems communicating, explain how much effort it takes to talk tothem. They may not be aware that their hearing loss is such a barrier. For the hearing impaired: Try to improve your situation by asking others to talk louder, slower, clearer, look at you, turn off the TV, get a little closer, etc. Communication habits are hard to break. The speaker’s job is to makethemselves heard. Look at others when they talk. Non-verbal expressions can help youunderstand. Respond when others talk so they know you heard them. Say, “Okay,”nod your head, ask questions, etc. If you have hearing aids, wear them as much as possible—even if it isquiet in your home. If there is a problem, see your audiologist, speak out,get a second opinion or ask others for help. Hearing aids often requireadjustments over time. If you are honest and willing, help is available.Tips courtesy of Dr. Molly Parker, Don White Hearing Aid Service18

ResourceshistoryQuad CitiesThe Mississippi River is the dominant physical attribute of theQuad Cities area. Serving as the boundary between Illinois andIowa, the river has been a major factor in the growth and economicdevelopment in the region. The word Mississippi is thought to be a combination ofChippewa words meaning “Great River” and “Great Water” and was first written “MichiSepe.” The river is 2,340 miles long from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico and drains anarea of 1,247,300 square miles. In 1907 the Moline Lock was completed to provide easieraccess around the Rock Island Rapids. In addition to opening the river to many tugboatsand barges, the locks and dams help keep the river from freezing over. The woodedhills and bluffs surrounding the river have created a natural habitat for one of the largestconcentrations of bald eagles in the winter months. The Quad Cities were originally called the Tri Cities for Rock Island and Moline, IL, andDavenport, IA. The term Quad Cites became popular when East Moline experiencedsubstantial growth. The region is considered home for over 400,000 residents with widelyvarying economic, cultural, religious and educational backgrounds. The Quad Cities’ climate, natural resources and topography have been naturally suitedto provide an excellent environment for human development throughout history. Themerging of the Rock River to the Mississippi has helped with transportation, food andcommerce. The first evidence of humans dates back to around 200 BC when Woodlandtribes occupied the area. Later Sauk and Fox Indians lived in the area. This village was oneof the largest in North America with 6,000 to 7,000 inhabitants. One of the Fox’s manyvillages was located where downtown Rock Island now stands. In 1804 the United States government purchased Arsenal Island from the Sauk and FoxIndians. Fort Armstrong was established on Arsenal Island to protect Euoropean settlersand provide a location for trading. As the Fort grew in importance for commerce andin population, a thriving river town developed. The town’s original plat was filed in 1835under the name of Stephenson and became Rock Island in 1841. Early growth of RockIsland was due to the railroad bridge being built across the Mississippi which broughtwidely varying industries including farm equipment, lumber, railroad supplies and pottery.56

One of the early residents in the area of the future Rock Island was David B. Sears whosettled here in 1836. He soon owned over 1,160 acres in what was to become anotherof the quad cities. Two plats were drawn up and the name Hesperia, meaning Star of theWest was written on one plat and Moline, meaning Mill Town on the other. Moline wasdeclared to be the rightful name.Colonel George Davenport, a veteran of the several wars including the War of 1812,settled in the area in 1816 and purchased land which was to become the original site ofDavenport. The site, which had been sold to the company by Antoine LeClaire a yearearlier, was surveyed in 1836. Shares in the company were then sold to investors wantingto be a part of Davenport. The city was incorporated in the winter of 1838–1839.The town of Bettendorf was originally called Gilbertown which was a merger ofGilbertown and Lillienthal. The land had been acquired as part of the Black HawkPurchase at the end of the Black Hawk War in 1832. Based on an agreement withWilliam and Joseph Bettendorf to move their iron wagon business to Gilbertown fromDavenport in 1900, the city gave the brothers 70 acres of land on the riverfront. In1903 the name of the town was changed in recognition of the contribution the newfactory had made to the town’s growth. Bettendorf’s population growth did not take offuntil the 1950s and 1960s as more manufacturing such as Alcoa came into the area.East Moline was started on land that was part of Bailey Davenport’s estate.Mr. Davenport was a son of Colonel George Davenport. The East Moline LandCompany developed the new town next to struggling town of Watertown. In 1900Deere and Co. built its first large factory in East Moline. Factories for other productsand goods soon followed. East Moline incorporated as a city in 1907. In 1914Watertown was annexed into East Moline. There are also many smaller towns in the area that contribute to the excellent standardof living that can be found in the Quad City area. The rivers, hills, valleys, woodlands, fields and everything in between are well worth exploring.U U U U U U Uwww.quadcityconnections.com57

ResourceshistoryArsenal IslandThe US Government location at Arsenal Island is a major QuadCities employer. The 946 acre island, geographically located inIllinois, lies between Rock Island, IL, and Davenport, IA. In 1816the government built Fort Armstrong on the island which served as a source ofdefense for the growing population of settlers and a trading post. From December 1863 to July 1865,the island was the location of a Unionprisoner of war camp for capturedConfederate soldiers. During that timeover 12,500 prisoners were held onthe Island. The Confederate Cemeteryis all that remains of the Rock IslandPrison Barracks and is the burial site of1,964 Confederate prisoners identifiedby name, company and unit. Onehundred twenty-five Union guards ofthe prisoner of war camp are buried inthe Rock Island National Cemetery onthe Island. This cemetery covers over70 acres and has over 29,000 burials.Following the Civil War the Island developed into the largest government-ownedweapons manufacturing arsenal in the United States. The Island currently hasover 6,000 civilians and additional military personnel employed with the RockIsland Arsenal, Armament, Munitions and Chemical Command, Army ManagementTraining College and the Rock Island District Corps of Engineers. The Island has been an important part of our country’s development, includingbeing mentioned in Margaret Mitchell’s novel Gone with the Wind, and willcontinue to evolve as needed by the government. A detailed history can be foundby exploring the Rock Island Arsenal Museum which is located on the Island.58
