<strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>2012</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong>Fund Development<strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> relies on <strong>the</strong> continued support ofindividuals, groups, foundations, corporations andgrants <strong>to</strong> sustain our operations, programs andservices. In <strong>2012</strong>, 1509 individual donors gifted$104,355.95, corporations $31,502.84, foundations$50,350.00, and groups $9,869.50.In addition <strong>Kerby</strong> received 3 individual estate/legacy gifts <strong>to</strong>taling $75,222.46 <strong>for</strong> a <strong>to</strong>tal donationline of $271,300.75. Government funding andgrants equalled $1,632,259.24.<strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> staff at <strong>the</strong> HereCome <strong>the</strong> 70’s fundraiser<strong>2012</strong> also brought a successful year in our newlyrevamped “Financial Planning Today” sessionswith Greg Phillips, President of Catalyst AssetManagement (an agency of Raymond James).It is important <strong>to</strong> provide as much in<strong>for</strong>mationas possible across a vast array of <strong>to</strong>pics <strong>to</strong>empower older adults <strong>to</strong> make in<strong>for</strong>med decisionswhen it comes <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own financial planningand investments. In <strong>to</strong>tal 84 unique individualsattended <strong>the</strong> sessions with many attendingmultiple sessions throughout <strong>the</strong> year. Sessions willcontinue through 2013.Grocery Delivery The <strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> Seniors Grocery Delivery Programcontinues <strong>to</strong> serve <strong>the</strong> community and assist seniorsin <strong>the</strong>ir own homes.Angela Lackey and Bev LeonardA Year of Growth• 368 isolated and vulnerable seniors wereshopped <strong>for</strong> in <strong>2012</strong>, an increase of 74individuals• 122 new referrals in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> program• 40 volunteers spent 5,026 hours groceryshopping• Volunteer visiting hours went from 1,335 <strong>to</strong>1,369 hours• There were 1,546 grocery shopping trips in <strong>2012</strong>• Savings <strong>for</strong> clients increased from $17,935 <strong>to</strong>$18,947 in <strong>2012</strong>• 720 Christmas & birthday gifts were delivered• Partnerships with Senior’s Secret Service, Mealson Wheels and Calgary Co-op remain strong• New partnerships have been <strong>for</strong>med withHomeInstead and Amica7

<strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>2012</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong><strong>Kerby</strong> NewsIn <strong>2012</strong> <strong>Kerby</strong> News continued <strong>to</strong> in<strong>for</strong>m,educate and entertain seniors with issues onroad safety, <strong>the</strong> Jubilee year, Calgary’s Yearof Culture and computer savvy seniors. Thepaper also included an increase in internal adspublicizing <strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> events and activities.Advertising sales revenue was down fromprevious years.<strong>Kerby</strong> News volunteers(left <strong>to</strong> right) Pam Oliver and Kathleen BurkeA print run of 30,000 newspapers wasdistributed throughout Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Albertaand mailed <strong>to</strong> <strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong>’s membership.Distribution continued <strong>to</strong> community outlets,doc<strong>to</strong>rs’ offices and s<strong>to</strong>re racks <strong>to</strong> reach anestimated readership of 50,000.Rotary ShelterIn <strong>2012</strong>, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Kerby</strong> Rotary Shelterexperienced many types of change <strong>to</strong>both its program and its personnel. At<strong>the</strong> beginning of <strong>the</strong> year, <strong>the</strong> Shelterintroduced shared rooms <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> first timein its his<strong>to</strong>ry and as a result, increased itsoccupancy from 92% in 2011 <strong>to</strong> 98% in<strong>2012</strong>, providing safe accommodation <strong>for</strong> 56older adults in need.The <strong>Kerby</strong> Rotary Shelter, also applied <strong>for</strong>and was granted funding from <strong>the</strong> CalgaryHerald Christmas fund which will go along way <strong>to</strong> ensuring <strong>the</strong> integrity of <strong>the</strong>program. Finally, it was with some sadnessthat <strong>the</strong> <strong>Kerby</strong> Rotary Shelter bid farewell<strong>to</strong> its Senior Manager, (and first ShelterManager) Brenda Hill in <strong>2012</strong>. Replacingher is Deb Runnalls who brings 30-yearsexperience serving those facing abuse,poverty and homelessness.“Thank God <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>the</strong> <strong>Kerby</strong> Rotary Shelter<strong>to</strong> give a home, food, friendship and caring <strong>to</strong>all <strong>the</strong>ir clients” - <strong>Kerby</strong> Rotary Shelter Client“It saved my life.” - <strong>Kerby</strong> Rotary Shelter ClientA Year of Growth9


<strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>2012</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong>Volunteers<strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> volunteers continued <strong>to</strong> move<strong>for</strong>ward with <strong>the</strong> recommendations <strong>for</strong> qualityimprovement that were developed by <strong>the</strong>external review and <strong>the</strong> Sustaining Volunteersin <strong>the</strong> Seniors Sec<strong>to</strong>r project that wereconducted in 2011. Highlights from <strong>the</strong> pastyear include:• The development of a VolunteerDepartment procedures manual• 367 active volunteers• 50,822 <strong>to</strong>tal volunteer hours• 109 new volunteers recorded hours• 12 external volunteer groups helpedout at special events like <strong>the</strong> StampedeBreakfast and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> 55+ Expo,per<strong>for</strong>med <strong>for</strong> clients or assisted withprojects• New ways of recruiting volunteersincluding posting positions on VolunteerCalgary’s website and attending volunteerfairs at Mount Royal University and BowValley College• A monthly feature in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Kerby</strong> News called“Volunteer Spotlight” began in September• We celebrated our volunteers with aHawaiian Luau at <strong>the</strong> annual volunteerappreciation event in AprilJohanna Westhaver and Bill AndersonVolunteer SpotlightBill and Johanna have beenvolunteering with <strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong>’sSeniors Grocery Delivery Programsince 2009. Toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y havevolunteered almost 8,000 hoursshopping <strong>for</strong> groceries, delivering<strong>to</strong> seniors in <strong>the</strong> community andvisiting with <strong>the</strong> clients. Theyconsistently go above and beyondas many clients depend on Bill andJohanna <strong>to</strong> get <strong>the</strong>ir groceries, visitand break <strong>the</strong> cycle of isolation.A Year of GrowthWellnessAfter much anticipation and a few delays <strong>the</strong>Wellness team moved in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Diana JamesWellness Clinic February 21, <strong>2012</strong>. While <strong>the</strong>clients were still getting <strong>the</strong>ir foot care done,<strong>the</strong> remainder of <strong>the</strong> Wellness staff with <strong>the</strong>help of o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>Kerby</strong> staff started <strong>the</strong> muchawaited move. The staff did not miss a beatand continued <strong>the</strong> foot care appointments <strong>the</strong>next morning. There were a <strong>to</strong>tal of 2,556 offoot care clients seen, with 91 new foot careclients. There were 564 drop-in clients <strong>for</strong>nutrition screening, blood pressure checks andblood sugar checks.10


<strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>2012</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong>MembershipDiversityIn <strong>2012</strong>, <strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> had 2,894 members.This number includes a <strong>to</strong>tal of 725 firsttimemembers.Membership is open <strong>to</strong> older adults aged 55years or older, and is valid <strong>for</strong> one calendaryear (January 1 <strong>to</strong> December 31).Expo<strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> supported a diversepopulation through <strong>the</strong> following ef<strong>for</strong>ts:• Subscribed <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> translation serviceCanTalk Canada which providestranslation <strong>for</strong> 110 languages• Held Metis Fest (Oct), Diwali (Nov)• Sought assistance with Metis and CCISon cultural events and collaborated <strong>to</strong>make events successful• Created multi language cards <strong>to</strong> beused in conjunction with <strong>the</strong> Can Talktranslation phone service• Attended cultural events <strong>to</strong> increaseknowledge and network• Provided staff with copies ofMulticultural Sensitivity Guide• Included an article on Ramadan in<strong>Kerby</strong> News• Invited speakers <strong>to</strong> staff meetings <strong>to</strong>provide education <strong>to</strong> staff• Muslim, Metis, Mental Healthpresentations throughout <strong>the</strong> yearprovided staff with in<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>to</strong>be more culturally responsive; openand in<strong>for</strong>med about <strong>the</strong> beliefs andbehaviors valued by o<strong>the</strong>r culturesShopsMayor Naheed Nenshi and <strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong>CEO Luanne Whitmarsh open <strong>the</strong> ExpoThe <strong>Kerby</strong> Get Up and Go Expo held onSeptember 6 and 7 welcomed over 1,600visi<strong>to</strong>rs. The event offered stimulatinglectures on active ageing <strong>to</strong>pics, a visit fromMayor Nenshi and a full complement ofbooths with products and services geared <strong>to</strong>adult consumers.The Next <strong>to</strong> New s<strong>to</strong>re and <strong>the</strong> Wise OwlBoutique at <strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> are open <strong>to</strong><strong>the</strong> public and <strong>the</strong> proceeds help <strong>to</strong> fundprograms and services throughout <strong>the</strong>agency. The Next <strong>to</strong> New s<strong>to</strong>re sells cleansecond-hand clothing. In <strong>2012</strong>, Next <strong>to</strong>New had 2,594 client contacts. The WiseOwl Boutique is a consignment shop,selling unique handmade items made byconsigners over <strong>the</strong> age of 55. In <strong>2012</strong>,The Wise Owl Boutique’s contacts were4,303 clients throughout <strong>the</strong> year.A Year of Growth11


<strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>2012</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong>FacilitiesAfter two years of constant construction impacts <strong>to</strong> <strong>Kerby</strong><strong>Centre</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Down<strong>to</strong>wn West-<strong>Kerby</strong> LRT station was officiallyopened in December of <strong>2012</strong>. As <strong>the</strong> heavy vibration, noise, anddisruption from major construction work ends, <strong>the</strong> remainingwork now focuses on building repairs and modifications <strong>to</strong><strong>the</strong> existing <strong>Kerby</strong> structure. Replacement of door hardware,vibration cracks in <strong>the</strong> facility, landscaping work, and warrantyrepairs are some of <strong>the</strong> outstanding concerns that will continue<strong>to</strong> propel <strong>the</strong> LRT project in<strong>to</strong> 2013.O<strong>the</strong>r significant projects within <strong>2012</strong> were <strong>the</strong> completionof remedial work on <strong>the</strong> Diana James Wellness Clinic andBoardroom renovations; in<strong>for</strong>mation technology changesincluding major server upgrades, and <strong>the</strong> deployment of 70 newworkstations <strong>for</strong> all users; replacement of <strong>the</strong> Lecture Room roofand <strong>the</strong> consequential Lecture Room repairs caused by leakingrainwater; and multiple upgrades <strong>to</strong> furniture and fixturesthroughout <strong>the</strong> building ranging from lift chairs <strong>to</strong> meat slicers.Be<strong>for</strong>e and after of <strong>the</strong> DianaJames Wellness Clinic<strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong>’s FIT Room continued <strong>to</strong> maintain its popularitythrough <strong>2012</strong>. A <strong>to</strong>tal of 2,952 workouts occurred throughout <strong>the</strong>year by almost 250 different FIT Room members. Free personaltraining sessions <strong>for</strong> FIT Room members was also announced <strong>to</strong>be continued, however it was cut back <strong>to</strong> 1 trainer, 2 days perweek and fully funded by <strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong>. This service will continuein<strong>to</strong> 2013.Special EventsThis year <strong>the</strong> <strong>Kerby</strong> team facilitated many largeevents: Calgary International Blues Festival(three times), International Women’s Day,<strong>Kerby</strong> AGM (which is never boring!), VolunteerRecognition, Ignite Your Life (supper andentertainment evenings), 70’s Dance fundraiser,Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra (twice), WorldElder Abuse Day event, Stampede Breakfast,Adult Day Support Program Stampede Hoedown,<strong>Kerby</strong> EXPO, Active Aging Week,Fashion Show, Metis-Fest, Diwali and our firstMembership Appreciation Holiday Feast <strong>to</strong> namemany – and <strong>the</strong>re were many more!A Year of GrowthMembers at our first MembershipAppreciation Holiday Feast12
