Mosaic Group Interfaith EventToronto, CanadaOn 22 February 2009, <strong>the</strong> Tabligh Board of <strong>the</strong><strong>the</strong> Jaffari Islamic community of Toronto hosted<strong>the</strong> Mosaic Group interfaith event. Th<strong>is</strong> initiative<strong>is</strong> an opportunity <strong>for</strong> diverse communities tonetowork with one ano<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> Greater Torontoarea. Community members shared <strong>the</strong>ir streng<strong>than</strong>d h<strong>is</strong>tory to understand justice and patience intoday’s society.In Islam, one’s spiritual growth involves workingtoge<strong>the</strong>r with acceptance of social responsibilitiesand collaboration. Moreover, sharing knowledgeabout Islam <strong>is</strong> a responsibility of all Muslims.<strong>The</strong> strength of all Shias <strong>is</strong> establ<strong>is</strong>hed from <strong>the</strong>sacrifices of Imam Husayn (AS) and h<strong>is</strong> family.While sharing our religious h<strong>is</strong>tory, <strong>the</strong> speakersdefined <strong>the</strong> true Islamic teachings on jihad andsacrifice. <strong>The</strong> group had <strong>the</strong> opportunity to networkto find similarities in religious teachings, andshared insight in <strong>the</strong> potency of Islamic beliefs.Several guests saw <strong>the</strong> advert<strong>is</strong>ement in <strong>the</strong> localnewspaper and were drawn to come to <strong>the</strong> ISIJmosque <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> first time.A thought provoking presentation by MaulanaSayyid Muhammad Rizvi provided an insightand reflection to <strong>the</strong> events of Kerbala and <strong>the</strong>sacrifices of Imam Husayn (AS), h<strong>is</strong> family and h<strong>is</strong>companions.<strong>The</strong> Mosaic Group has been in ex<strong>is</strong>tence <strong>for</strong>almost 30 years and <strong>is</strong> actively involved inpromoting ‘understanding’ among various faithsin Canada, especially in Ontario. <strong>The</strong> organ<strong>is</strong>ationwas originally initiated by a Chr<strong>is</strong>tian group;later, <strong>the</strong> Jew<strong>is</strong>h Temple Har Zion and <strong>the</strong> JaffariIslamic Centre began participating in an activeway. Currently, <strong>the</strong>re are several organ<strong>is</strong>ationsrepresenting Buddh<strong>is</strong>m, Chr<strong>is</strong>tianity, Hindu<strong>is</strong>m,Islam, Juda<strong>is</strong>m, Sikh<strong>is</strong>m and Zoroastrian<strong>is</strong>m whopaint <strong>the</strong> complete picture of th<strong>is</strong> Mosaic.Several people from <strong>the</strong> Zion Temple, <strong>the</strong> UnitedChurch and o<strong>the</strong>r places of worship attended th<strong>is</strong>event.Many individuals commented, ‘We need to knowmore of Imam Husayn (AS) as a leader, man andh<strong>is</strong> stand on social justice.’While reflecting on <strong>the</strong> h<strong>is</strong>torical sacrifices thatestabl<strong>is</strong>hed social justice some 1400 years ago,<strong>the</strong>re was a consensus among <strong>the</strong> participantsthat in today’s society we all need connections toachieve peace and harmony.8Insight Jamaadi al Ula 1431 / May 2010
