The originalhit play of 1930s was in Kannada and now hereproduced it in that language. Directed by K.Shankar, the film had leading stars Rajkumar,Kalyan Kumar, Aswath, S. V. Ranga Rao, Jamunaand B. Saroja Devi.K. Shankar, who rose to be one of the topfilmmakers, came from the AVM school of filmmakingand Meiyappan gave him the initial breakto make his successful career. A creative filmeditor, he made a mark directing films in Tamil,Kannada, Sinhala, Telugu and Hindi. He mademany box office hits in more than one languagelike ‘Aalaya Mani’, ‘Aandavan Kattalai’, and‘Varuvaan Vadivelan’. An excellent technician,he later came to be hailed as master of a genre ofTamil films, the ‘Devotional cinema’ or ’Bhakthicinema’, a genre peculiar and popular in southIndia and more so in Tamil Nadu. These are filmsdevoted to worship of gods by women, atheistichusbands being converted by their religious wives, miracles involving Hindu gods and goddesses inmodern day life and such features. These filmshave their own following among masses.Indeed such a film is colloquially known in Tamilas “Saami padam” (‘God picture’!). Some of themhave been box-office bonanzas - an interestingand characteristic feature of Indian Cinema. The Telugu version of ‘Bhoo Kailas’ had anexcellent cast with top stars N. T. Rama Rao, A.Nageswara Rao, S. V. Ranga Rao and Jamuna.Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (1923- 1993) wasone of the mega stars of Telugu Cinema, a cultfigure in his home State Andhra Pradesh wherehe was almost deified by the masses. He was animportant personality in Indian Cinema and alsothe political history of India of the late-20thcentury.Hailing from a farming family in the heartlandof Andhra Pradesh, N. T. Rama Rao was involvedin Telugu theater even in college where he hadformed his own drama troupe. After taking his B.A degree, he worked in a government office forsome time and made his way to the Mecca of SouthIndian Cinema, Madras in 1948 to seek fame andfortune in movies. He found both in incrediblyample measure! He made his debut in movies in a supportingrole as police inspector in L. V. Prasad’s ‘ManaDesam’ (1949). He played hero in the neo-realisticstyle film, Prasad’s ‘Sahukaru’ (1950). Boxoffice status came to him with hits like ‘Samsaaram’(1950), ‘Pathala Bhairavi’ (1951), ‘Pelli ChesiChoodu’ (1952) and ‘Missiamma’ (1955). The deificationand cult figure status began when he wascast as Lord Krishna in K. V. Reddi’s box-officebonanza ‘Maaya Bazaar’ (1957). With his handsomelooks, impressive screen presence, stylizeddelivery of Telugu dialogues in his fine voice, hebecame the ideal choice for mythological roles ofLord Krishna, Lord Rama, Lord Venkateswaraand other gods of the Hindu Pantheon. He played such ‘god roles’ in many films like‘Sampoorna Ramayanam’ (1958, Tamil), ‘ShriVenkateswara Mahatmyam’ (1960), ‘ShriKrishnarjuna Yuddham’ (1962), ‘Karna’ 1964),‘Paandava Vanavaasam’ (1965), ‘Shri KrishnaThulabharam’ and others. Indeed his image asLord Krishna is so deep-rooted in the hearts, souls and minds of the Andhras that, when aKrishna temple was built in an Andhra Pradeshvillage, the face of the idol was copied from RamaRao’s! The actor had been deified - a strange caseof art dictating life! When C. N. Annadurai took over as ChiefMinister of Tamil Nadu in 1967, the apex representativebody of film production in South India,South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce(SIFCC), in Madras honoured him with a grandreception. The Chamber President and notedfilm producer AL. Srinivasan met Meiyappansome days earlier and told him that the traditionalwelcome address would be kept inside an ornamentalcarved silver casket and it would beauctioned at the meeting to raise funds for theChief Minister’s Fund. Srinivasan requestedMeiyappan that he should bid for the casketirrespective of the going price. Meiyappan agreedat once without a second thought because thecause was laudable and for public good.(To be continued)
