Foreward<br />

In September 1967, my father Carmine D’Onofrio opened the family shoe import business<br />

in earnest with the signature location on Vancouver’s Commercial Drive, the focal point of<br />

the city’s Italian community. With an unwavering dedication to quality, value and service,<br />

Kalena’s Shoes thrived. Over the years, many in the Italian community voiced their opinion<br />

that with the containers of shoes already coming over from Italy, perhaps the family business<br />

should expand to include wines from the homeland. After all, the selection of Italian<br />

wines in the market at the time did leave room for improvement. In 1991, Stile Wines<br />

was born.<br />

The name ‘Stile’ ―pronounced ‘Stee-lay’ in Italian‖, corresponding to its English counterpart<br />

‘style’, was chosen not only to represent the stylish wines that became part of the portfolio,<br />

but also to reflect the culture of incorporating wine stylishly as part of enjoying life to the<br />

fullest.<br />

Over time, the list of highly regarded Italian producers working with Stile grew, to the extent<br />

that Stile Wines became synonymous with Italian wine. To this day, we are proud to<br />

say that we offer one of the very finest portfolios of Italian wine in Canada.<br />

Along the way, we have strived to add products from reputable producers from all over the<br />

world, always keeping in mind our goal of offering the absolute best possible quality and<br />

value. While we will undoubtedly always be viewed as an Italian specialist, we can now lay<br />

claim to being a truly diversified, international importer.<br />

My father passed away in 2005, but his spirit remains very much alive in all that we do.<br />

We are happy to know that the fine products that we bring to this special part of the world<br />

have brought joy and a real appreciation for the finer things in life to so many.<br />

ANDREW PEACE<br />

Founded in 1975, Bodega y Cavas de Weinert is located in Lujan de Cuyo,<br />

Argentina´s cradle for top quality wines. The original 1890 Spanish colonial building,<br />

reminiscent of an old winery owned by the family Otero until 1920, catches the eye by<br />

its beauty, inviting those who pass by to know what it guards inside.<br />

Don Bernardo C. Weinert, founder and owner, could be defined as an entrepreneur.<br />

Born in a small German colony in Southern Brazil, he built his name around<br />

international transport in South America. Fascinated by the world of wine, he decided<br />

to found his own winery in Argentina with one unconditional philosophy: producing<br />

high quality wines.<br />

VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA<br />

The business began as a vineyard in 1980, then became a full fledged winery in<br />

1995. The first year grape intake of 3,000 tonnes has grown steadily each year to<br />

the 16,250 tonnes crushed in 2003, ranking it 17th in Australia. The winery is 14th<br />

largest based on export sales volume.<br />

Designed and constructed by Andrew Peace, the winery has an emphasis on an even<br />

flow of must and juice, with minimal oxygen contact to ensure maximum quality and<br />

fruit flavour retention. Despite its size, Andrew Peace Wines remains a family operation,<br />

with great care and attention paid to all facets of wine production. The results<br />

are consistent, robust wines with all of the character and flavour that wine lovers<br />

around the world have come to expect from vineyards Down Under. The new 1 litre<br />

Tetra Pak wines are a particularly exciting venture.<br />

TWO HANDS<br />

BAROSSA VALLEY, AUSTRALIA<br />

Two Hands is one of Australia’s most decorated wineries, making its most sought after<br />

wines. The ‘two hands’ are Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz, who formed the company<br />

in 1999 with the clear objective of making the best possible Shiraz wines from<br />

prized Shiraz producing regions within Australia.<br />

Michael Twelftree’s background included years of exporting Australian wine to USA and<br />

Asia, while Richard Mintz was a former CEO of one of Australia’s leading cooperages in<br />

the Barossa Valley. The two old friends set out in 2000 with just 17 tonnes of fruit<br />

from the McLaren Vale and Padthaway wine regions. From the start, the wines were<br />

well received with a healthy stream of reviews, culminating with Robert Parker’s 2::4<br />

declaration of Two Hands as ‘the finest negociant operation south of the equator’.<br />

Two Hands concentrates its efforts on sourcing the best fruit from the best Shiraz vineyards<br />

PIKES<br />

CLARE VALLEY, AUSTRALIA<br />

Englishman Henry Pike immigrated to South Australia in 1878, and settled<br />

in the small town of Oakbank in the Adelaide Hills. In 1886, he established<br />

the family brewing business called H. Pike & Co. This name became well<br />

known throughout South Australia for its quality beer, soft drink and tonic<br />

ale, and the company used the English Pike fish on the label, which remains<br />

to this day—a symbol of Pikes’ long heritage.<br />

The sale of the company did not end the family tradition. Henry Pike’s<br />

great grandson Edgar was well established in the wine industry, and his<br />

sons Andrew and Neil both followed in their father’s footsteps, establishing<br />

Pikes in 1984 in the beautiful Clare Valley. The winery and vineyards are<br />

situated in the historic and picturesque Polish Hill River sub region on the<br />

eastern side of the valley. The climate in this area is cooler and the soils<br />

are quite unique to the rest of the region, attributes that impart distinctive<br />

flavours and aromas to the wines.<br />

Riesling has become the flagship for which Pikes have become best known.<br />

Other varieties produced include Semillon, Viognier, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet<br />

Sauvignon and Shiraz. They have consistently met their goals of producing<br />

absolute top quality varietal wines—worthy of the longstanding distinctive<br />

fish logo that is still found on all Pikes wines.<br />

The first vines at Chateau Peach-Latt, planted by the monks from the Lagrasse<br />

Abbey that was founded by Charlemagne, can be traced back to 784 A.D. Today,<br />

Chateau Pech-Latt is a 325 hectare estate, of which 100 acres are<br />

planted with vines.<br />

The winery is proud to rank among the pioneers in organic farming, a choice<br />

which stems from their aim to preserve a well balanced and sound<br />

environment. The vineyard is sparsely fertilized, and if so, only with organic<br />

products. Pesticides, weed killers and other synthetic fertilizers are banned.<br />

Thus, Pech-Latt enables wine lovers to maintain a healthy way of life and<br />

discover, on site in Lagrasse, an ideal natural environment, isolated and spared<br />

Historically, the Corbières region has always been connected with winegrowers<br />

and the making of wine. As of the 12th century, the Abbey of Fontfroide was<br />

taken over by the monks of the Cistercian Order, highly skilled winegrowers who<br />

undertook to restore the art of the vine in the Corbieres once started by the<br />

Phoenicians and furthered by the Romans.<br />

So began the history of the domaine known as Caraguilhes. The famous chateau<br />

that one sees today was constructed in the early 17th century. The vines<br />

still grow in an ideal location known for its exceptional soil quality, with s mixture<br />

of clay and limestone. In 1935, the winery’s new owner became the only grower<br />

to refuse to use insecticides and weed killers or chemical fertilizers—well ahead<br />

of his time. Inspired by the same precision and philosophy, the same love of the<br />

soil and of authenticity, current owner Laurent Max continues this practice.<br />

Since 1990, the organic status of the wines of Caraguiles are formally guaranteed<br />

The Librandi Winery is headquartered in Ciro Marina, a small Calabrian town on the<br />

Ionian coast, south of the Gulf of Taranto. The area is naturally suited to vine growing,<br />

with the Sila Mountains in behind, guaranteeing premium contrast between day and<br />

Librandi has grown grapes for four centuries, and began bottling in the 1950s. Management<br />

Azienda Agricola Di Majo Norante is located to the north of the Gargano in<br />

Molise on the estate of the Marquees Norante of Santa Cristina. Since the<br />

1800’s its ancestors have dedicated themselves to vine cultivation (ancient wine<br />

cellars are located under the main town square and the old palace in<br />

Campomarino). In 1968, a modern canteen was constructed, along with the<br />

first replanted vines in the Ramitello zone. This zone has northeastern exposure,<br />

constant summer breezes, a light limestone soil, and a slope toward the<br />

Scabolone and Madonna Grande valleys, combining to create a very favorable<br />

grape growing environment.<br />

Di Majo Norante uses only estate grown grapes, cultivated without the use of<br />

chemical or synthetic additives, yielding a product that can be considered<br />

“biological”. Passion and love for the grapes are combined with the most<br />

MASCARELLO<br />

Damilano is one of the historical Barolo producing farms, founded over a century<br />

ago by Guiseppe Borgogno, The tradition was kept up by his son-in-law Giacomo<br />

Damilano and with his children, until it was passed on to his four grandchildren,<br />

who very attentively manage their forefathers’ land today. The wines<br />

are renowned for their upright style and the estate is widely appreciated due to<br />

the strictness and passion that accompany all of the company’s activities. The<br />

vineyards are situated in the most famous crus of the Langa region: Cannubi,<br />

The members of the Giuseppe Mascarello family have been growing wines for<br />

to the present day Mauro Mascarello, who began in 1970 to vinify the<br />

Argiolas has firmly established itself as one of the very top producers from Sardinia,<br />

the newest critics’ darling region of Italy. Sardinia has followed in the footsteps of<br />

Sicily in making a name for itself through producing fabulously aromatic wines from<br />

indigenous grape varietals— at very fair prices.<br />

Argiolas’ history began in 1918, when Francesco Argiolas planted the first vineyard<br />

with the assistance of some returning Italian POWs. But it was Antonio Argiolas,<br />

whose great enthusiasm and experience in viticulture set the stage for greatness,<br />

buying new estates and setting up a modern farm. In the late 197:'s, Antonio’s sons<br />

Franco and Giuseppe reorganized the business in all aspects, from vineyards to cellars.<br />

They chose one of Italy's leading oenologists, Giacomo Tachis, who joined forces<br />

with oenologist Mariano Murru. Now three generations of the Argiolas family are<br />

TENUTA SAN LEONARDO<br />

The history of Tenuta San Leonardo dates back at least 1500 years, with the return<br />

of prisoners from Trentino, who erected a chapel in honor of the patron<br />

saint of prisoners, Saint Leonard. In the 12th century, the Fratres Cruciferi, an<br />

order with adherents all over Europe and which remained at San Leonardo until<br />

1656, expanded grape growing and adopted a modern approach to viticulture at<br />

the monastery. Today, the ancient monastery hospice, which once gave shelter<br />

to the destitute, is now the cellar where the wines mature in barrels.<br />

The estate has witnessed many historical events, including acting as headquarters<br />

in both world wars; first, of the high command of the Italian 29th army corps<br />

in WWI (Austria made a formal request for an armistice to be held on the<br />

grounds), and in the Second World War, of the counterespionage section of the<br />

German high command on the Italian front.<br />

Present owners the Guerrieri Gonzaga family have taken advantage of the specific<br />

terroir to create Bordeaux-inspired blended wines, under the guidance of<br />

master winemaker Carlo Ferrini and consultant winemaker Giacomo Tachis, who<br />

is considered to be a genuine maestro of Italian winemaking through his creation<br />

of some of Tuscany’s most influential wines from the 197:s onwards.<br />

This talented pair ensures calculated ageing—at least six months in large format<br />

Slavonian oak, then 24 months in small French oak barrels—and masterful blending<br />

of each contributing varietal. This is followed by at least one year of bottle<br />

ageing. The results are consistently nothing short of spectacular.<br />

Fattoria Lavacchio is an established organic farm, producing wine and olive<br />

oil in the Chianti Rufina region of Italy. Approximately 80 per cent of the<br />

vineyards are composed of selected clones of Sangiovese. The other red<br />

berry vines include mainly Merlot, some Cabernet Sauvignon and in the very<br />

young vineyards, some Syrah. All of Fattoria Lavacchio’s vineyards are<br />

Grape picking is carried out by hand according to old country traditions, for<br />

Distilleria Bottega was set up in 1977 by Aldo Bottega, a master distiller with over 30<br />

years of experience. The distillery began modestly, operating in the local grappa market. In<br />

1983, with the death of its founder, son Sandro took on the management of the company<br />

with the assistance of siblings Barbara and Stefano. In a few years, Distilleria Bottega left<br />

its anonymity, thanks to an innovative distillation system that makes grappa mellower and<br />

more delicate. In 1987, the Alexander brand joined Bottega; this new brand is intended for<br />

those consumers who have developed a much more educated and refined palate.<br />

All Alexander Grappa has its origin from very fresh and vinous marcs that are distilled in<br />

copper stills following the steam distillation in order to guarantee the highest quality. The<br />

Springbank Distillery is a true original in many regards. It is the oldest distillery<br />

In 1519, five ships led by Ferdinand de Magellan set out to circumnavigate the world<br />

and explore ‘the spice islands’. Three years later, only the ship Victoria returned to<br />

Spain, with 18 people and hundreds of cloves. Sadly, Magellan, who died in battle<br />

during the voyage, never saw the results of his spice discoveries. Those spices inspired<br />

the creation of gin as we know it, and it is to cloves in particular that Magellan<br />

Gin owes its inspired taste.<br />

Created by spirits guru Michel Roux, Magellan Gin is made in small batches in Cognac,<br />

France from triple-distilled neutral spirits, spring water and 11 freeze-dried botanicals,<br />

traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for its brewing process has<br />
