<strong>Chesapeake</strong> <strong>College</strong>/<strong>MGW</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> <strong>Program</strong> <strong>Admission</strong> <strong>Information</strong>IntroductionThank you for your interest in the <strong>Chesapeake</strong> <strong>College</strong>/<strong>MGW</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> programadmissions requirements, policies and selection procedures. The mission of the nursingdepartment is to prepare students for Maryland state licensure eligibility and to obtainentry-level positions with the opportunity for career advancement. The Associate ofScience Degree in <strong>Nursing</strong> requires students to complete NUR 102, NUR 111,NUR 120,NUR 210, NUR 220, NUR 230 and several prescribed general education courses to beeligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) forregistered nurses. Students complete these nursing courses in four consecutive semesterswithout a summer session. The majority of nursing courses are offered at the <strong>Chesapeake</strong><strong>College</strong> Center for <strong>Nursing</strong> and Allied Health, Memorial Hospital at Easton, MD, Inc.,2 ND floor of the North Wing, 219 S. Washington Street, Easton, MD.The Maryland Board of <strong>Nursing</strong> determines admission to the NCLEX-RN examination.By law, the board may deny licensure for a variety of reasons that include conviction of afelony or crime involving moral turpitude, if the nature of the offense bears directly onthe fitness of the person to practice nursing. On the application for licensure, the Boardof <strong>Nursing</strong> will ask candidates if they have ever been convicted of a felony ormisdemeanor (other than a traffic violation). If you know you will legally need to answer“yes” to this question, it is imperative that you contact the Board of <strong>Nursing</strong> prior toapplication to confidentially discuss with them your potential eligibility to take the exam.The <strong>Chesapeake</strong> <strong>College</strong>/<strong>MGW</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> <strong>Program</strong> is fully approved by the MarylandBoard of <strong>Nursing</strong> and the Maryland Higher Education Commission. In addition, theprogram is accredited by the National League of <strong>Nursing</strong> Accrediting Commission(NLNAC).It is hoped that the information that follows will assist you in understanding the selectionprocess and guide you through the procedures you must follow to apply the program.Please read all of the information carefully as it is ultimately your responsibility toensure all forms and information required for admission are provided by the stateddeadlines.Page 1 of 5 9/08


<strong>Admission</strong> Requirements for the 2009-10 Academic YearStudents are encouraged to meet with an academic advisor as soon as they becomeinterested in applying to the nursing program to develop an individualized plan tocomplete all required courses in the most effective sequence. All prospective nursingstudents must complete each of the following requirements by the application deadline inorder to be considered eligible for admission to nursing courses:1. Graduation from an accredited high school or GED.2. Completion of the <strong>College</strong>’s Academic Skills Assessment (ASA) administeredthrough the Office of Student Success and Enrollment Services.a. Students who have completed college level English and math are exemptfrom the placement test, but should note the minimum requirements forBiology and CHEM 012 listed below.b. Students assessed with college-level academic skills in math and Englishare able to register directly into the pre-requisite requirements for thenursing program if high school biology and chemistry (academic trackonly will be accepted) have been completed with a “C” or better within 10years. It is the responsibility of the student to submit transcripts by theapplication deadline that validate these courses were taken within the 10year timeframe and to obtain course descriptions of the same.c. Students not assessed with college-level academic skills in math andEnglish and/or those that have not completed high-school chemistry andbiology within 10 years with a “C” or better are required to complete thefollowing courses in addition to the standard prerequisite requirements.Each of these courses will need to be completed by the applicationdeadline:i. Chem 012 with a minimum of a “C” or betterii. Bio 101 (as a pre-requisite requirement to Bio 211)iii. Any math or English courses prescribed by the placement exam3. Complete prerequisite courses for the <strong>Nursing</strong> <strong>Program</strong> with a minimum of a “C”or better by the application deadline:a. Bio 211, Anatomy and Physiology (4 credits)b. Psc 150, General Psychology (3 credits)c. Eng 101, English (3 credits)d. Mat elective ( Mat 113, 115, 141) (3 credits)e. Bio 212, Anatomy and Physiology II (4 credits)f. Bio 202, Microbiology (4 credits)Note: Laboratory science and human growth and development courses taken 10 years ormore prior to application for admission to the program will not be considered.Page 2 of 5 9/08


<strong>Admission</strong>s Procedure for the 2009-10 Academic Year1. Apply for admission to <strong>Chesapeake</strong> <strong>College</strong> and indicate nursing as the academicmajor.2. Submit official high school and college transcripts by the application deadline ofMay 25, 2010.3. Completion of the <strong>College</strong>’s Academic Skills Assessment (ASA) administeredthrough the Office of Student Success and Enrollment Services.4. Complete any developmental course work (which may include CHEM 012 andBio 101) prescribed through the placement testing process by May 25, 2010.5. Meet with the Advisor for <strong>Nursing</strong> and Allied Health <strong>Program</strong>s to develop anacademic plan to meet all program requirements.6. Complete the prerequisite requirements for the nursing program by May 25, 2010.7. Apply for admission to the Associate of Science in <strong>Nursing</strong> Degree <strong>Program</strong>.<strong>Admission</strong> to this program is a separate process from admission to the <strong>College</strong>,and is competitive, selective and based on established criteria. Applications areavailable through the Center of <strong>Nursing</strong> and Allied Health, or by calling410-827-5917. A 2010 application is attached to this <strong>Nursing</strong> <strong>Admission</strong><strong>Information</strong> Booklet. The form is to be fully completed and returned with a copyof the academic plan developed by the nursing and allied health advisor within thelast academic year (i.e. from summer 2008 through spring 2010). Applicationssubmitted without a copy of the academic plan will not be considered foradmission. New students are admitted in the fall semester only. The deadline forfiling completed applications and submitting all required documentation is May25, 2010. Applications will be accepted beginning one year prior to the date ofanticipated admission.8. Complete the Nurse Entrance Examination by May 25, 2010. (morecomprehensive information about the exam will follow).Page 3 of 5 9/08


3. Students will be notified if a space is available during the first week of July, 2010by the Director of the <strong>Nursing</strong> <strong>Program</strong>. Final acceptance into nursing courses iscontingent upon timely submission of the following:a. Health record validating sufficient stamina and mental stability to fulfillthe requirements of the program and the customary requirements of theprofessionb. Validation of immunization statusc. Certification in CPR as a health care providerd. Completion of independent learning modules for clinical unitse. Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check4. Students who do not receive a space must reapply to the program if he/she wishesto be considered for the following year.<strong>Information</strong> Regarding the Nurse Entrance TestThe <strong>Admission</strong> Assessment Exam by Health Education Systems, Inc. (HESI ) will beadministered during the winter and spring months in the Learning Resource Center atWye Mills. The exam provides feedback in several academic areas, as well as a personalprofile that analyzes individual learning preferences and styles.
