The residents here enjoy the quiet, peaceful lifestyle 

of a small town while still living close to the cities of 

Tampa, Orlando, and Lakeland. 

Being close to Tampa has put Mulberry in the path 

of Tampa’s eastward expansion. As a result, many 

lovely up-and-coming neighborhoods are now being 

built on Mulberry’s outskirts. Many of these new 

neighborhoods provide breathtaking views of the 

area’s lakes and other natural settings.


MULBERRY YESTERDAY 

A Brief History of Mulberry, Florida

1890 

The history of Mulberry begins with phosphate. 

Phosphorus was long recognized as a vital 

ingredient in fertilizers, and early sources of 

phosphorus included bone black and bird 

guano. However, phosphate rock, also called 

phosphorite, was found to be a far richer source 

of phosphorus. Phosphate rock was first found 

in South Carolina, but, in 1880, Dr. C. A. Simmons 

discovered phosphate in Alachua County, Florida. 

The following year, J. Francis LeBaron, a civilian 

engineer with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, 

found river pebble phosphate while surveying the 

Peace River in south central Florida. 

Florida phosphate mining began on the Peace 

River in 1888. At the same time, prospectors 

began searching westward for other sources of 

phosphate. In the region now called Bone Valley 

(because of the many fossils found in the area), 

prospectors discovered thick beds of phosphate 

rocks, covered only by twenty to fifty feet of sand 

and clay. Removing this “overburden,” and mining 

the phosphate layer proved far less expensive 

than mining river pebble phosphate or the “hard 

rock” phosphate in north Florida. 

Mining in Bone Valley began in 1890. A railroad, 

originally built to transport the lumber and 

turpentine produced in the region, ran through 

the heart of Bone Valley. A convenient location to 

drop off and pick up goods was a mid-point on 

this railway, near a large Mulberry tree. This site 

was centrally located among several phosphate 

mining companies and soon became the hub of 

the land pebble mining operations. A town sprang 

up near the Mulberry tree and naturally took the 

name of Mulberry. 

Mulberry was a mining boom town, with all the 

wildness of a frontier town. Several hangings took 

place from the Mulberry tree and, later, the Canal 

Street bridge. The town grew rapidly, getting its 

first doctor, A. F. Fletcher, in 1895. By 1896, it was 

the fifth largest voting district in Polk County. 

Businesses to support the burgeoning

phosphate mining industry came to Mulberry, 

and, in 1899, the Juanita Hotel opened. On 

February 12, 1901, Mulberry was incorporated 

into the Town of Mulberry. 

Mulberry businesses prospered. The W. S. 

Badcock Corporation, now one of the nation’s 

largest privately-owned home furniture retailers, 

started in Mulberry in 1904. Its national 

headquarters and center of operations is still 

located in Mulberry. The Mine & Mill Supply 

Company, begun in Mulberry in 1909, is one 

of the oldest continually operating companies 

in Polk County. 

For the next 70 years, Mulberry, despite setbacks 

like the town fires of 1902, remained the center 

of the Bone Valley phosphate mining industry. 

The eponymous Mulberry tree survived 

until the late 1960’s. Around that same time, 

phosphate mining began moving south, as the 

nearby mines were depleted. 

While Mulberry is still home to many 

companies supporting the phosphate mining 

industry, Mulberry has re-invented itself. It is 

now home to many thriving businesses, such 

as Food Technology Services, Inc., and Clark 

Environmental, Inc. The Mosaic Company is 

developing Streamsong, a 16,000 acres resort, 

golf, and spa community south of Mulberry.

Being in the middle of Central Florida, 

supplier of one third of the world’s 

phosphate, has earned Mulberry the 

title of “Phosphate Mining Capital of the 

World.” Because of its plentiful supply of 

phosphate, phosphate mining has always 

been a huge industry in Mulberry. The two 

largest phosphate companies that operate 

in Mulberry are Mosaic and CF Industries, 

which both have regional headquarters in 

nearby Bartow. 

Other than Mosaic and CF Industries, 

Tampa Electric Company (TECO) is 

another large company with important 

operations near Mulberry. Their Polk 

Power Station, 13 miles south of Mulberry, 

is one of the most technologically 

advanced power plants in the country. 

For a small town, Mulberry is home 

to many large, important companies. 

One of the most famous companies 

to be based in Mulberry is Badcock 

Home Furniture, which has its world 

headquarters there. Other businesses 

based in Mulberry include Danielle

Fence Manufacturing, which makes industrial, 

residential, and commercial fencing; Mulberry 

Railcar Repair Company, a professional rail 

car repair, maintenance, and car cleaning 

services provider; and Clark Environmental, a 

transporter and disposer of industrial waste. 

One of the first companies ever founded in 

Polk County was Mulberry’s own Mine and 

Mill Industrial Supply Company. Mine and 

Mill has been serving Polk County and all of 

Florida for over 100 years, and today they are 

considered one of Florida’s top industrial firms. 

DCR Services, Inc. is a holding company 

comprised of a group of companies that 

provide engineering, fabrication, general and 

mechanical construction, electrical installation, 

control system automation, and wireless 

broadband to industrial and municipal 

customers nationally and internationally. 

The 28 year old company is a strong 

supporter of various community 

organizations including the Chamber of 

Commerce, Central Florida Development 

Council, Mulberry Phosphate Museum and 

Floridians for Industry, Jobs and Growth.

When it comes to educating your child, 

Mulberry offers a variety of choices in public 

and private schools. The Polk County Public 

School District, is the eighth-largest school 

district in Florida and one of the largest in 

the nation, in addition to being the county’s 

largest employer. 

Mulberry High, Purcell Elementary, and 

Kingsford Elementary have educated 

generations of Mulberry’s families, and are 

considered historic institutions. Among the 

career academy schools, Mulberry High 

School’s “Auto Garage” program and the 

Central Florida Aerospace Academy are 

run by the Polk County school board’s 

Workforce Education Department. The 

Central Florida Aerospace Academy at 

Lakeland Linder Regional Airport offers 

the curriculum of a traditional high 

school along with hands-on training in 

aviation-related occupations.

HEALTHCARE 

Mulberry is within 10 miles of three 

exceptional healthcare facilities: Bartow 

Regional Medical Center, Watson Clinic 

Bartow, and Watson Clinic South in Lakeland. 

All three are part of the Watson Clinic 

network, a network of highly respected 

hospitals and clinics in Central Florida. 

Bartow Regional Medical Center is an 

acute care facility. The doctors and staff at 

Bartow Regional have many specialties, from 

ophthalmology, ear, nose and throat, and 

orthopedics to vascular surgery, cosmetic 

procedures, podiatry, and urology. Their 

emergency services department is run by 

board-certified emergency physicians and 

staffed by specially trained nurses. 

Right next to Bartow Regional Medical 

Center is Watson Clinic Bartow, the clinic 

of choice for many people in Eastern Polk 

County. The highly skilled professionals at 

Watson Clinic Bartow specialize in family 

medicine, pediatric cardiology, 

and endocrinology. 


In southwest Lakeland you will find 

Watson Clinic South, which specializes 

in dermatology, family medicine, internal 

medicine, pediatrics, priority care, psychiatry, 

allergy treatment, asthma treatment, 

and immunology. 

RELIGION 

Many denominations are represented 

in Mulberry, including Methodist, Baptist, 

Episcopal, Pentecostal, and several others. 

Mulberry is an openhearted community that 

welcomes people of all faiths, so whatever 

your beliefs are, you will be treated like 

family in Mulberry. 

CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS 

There are many opportunities to be 

an active member of the community in 

Mulberry. Civic organizations with chapters 

in Mulberry include the Kiwanis Club, the 

American Legion, the Golden Age Club, 

Optimist International, Concerned Citizens 

of Mulberry, and the Order of the Eastern 

Star. There is is also a Masonic Lodge nearby 

in Lakeland. Lakeland.

RECREATION 

Whether you’re a nature lover, a golf 

enthusiast, an airplane aficionado, or a 

history buff, you’ll definitely find something 

of interest in Mulberry. 

Speckled with lakes, Mulberry is a prime 

location for fishing, boating and water skiing. 

Dees Ski Centre founded in 1951 is the 

longest continuously running ski school 

in the U.S. The Ski Paradise Ski Club is a 

popular site for ski tournaments. Skiers of 

all levels can use their practice facility to 

practice everything from jumping to shalom. 

Those who prefer to stay on land will find 

plenty to do in Mulberry’s parks. Loyce E. 

Harpe Park, built on reclaimed phosphate 

mine land is a favorite site for mountain 

bikers. There is also a baseball/softball field, 

a boat ramp, a soccer field, a picnic area, 

and a playground, even the dogs can join in 

on the fun at DiOGi Dog Park. 

If golf is your game you can choose from 

two great courses. Reservation Golf 

Course is an 18-hole, regulation length golf 

course with a short layout that rewards a 

good shot, and plenty of natural obstacles to 

challenge you. Imperial Lakes Golf & Country 

Club features an 18-hole championship golf 

course, tennis courts, a fitness center, and an 

Olympic-sized swimming pool. 

Airplane enthusiasts will thoroughly 

enjoy a visit to South Lakeland Regional 

Airport, which hosts an Annual Fly-In every 

“Superbowl Saturday”. The airport is home 

to South Lakeland Sport Aviation, which 

builds and sells light aircraft and offers pilot 

training; and Skydive Tampa Bay, an applauded 

skydiving school with world-champion 

instructors and over 30 years of experience.

Just a few miles north, is the Lakeland Linder 

Regional Airport, home to the Sun n’ Fun 

International Fly-In and Expo. This annual 

festival celebrating all things aviation, includes 

aircraft judging, a hot-air balloon launch, 

teacher’s workshops, student tours, live 

music, and food from local restaurants. 

Lakeland Linder is also home to the Florida 

Air Museum, which showcases specimens of 

vintage airplanes of every type, from antiques 

and classics to ultra-lights to war-birds. The 

museum is best known for its large collection 

of Howard Hughes memorabilia. 

The Mulberry Phosphate Museum chronicles 

the history of the phosphate mining industry 

in Mulberry and Central Florida. The museum 

used to be a freight and passenger train 


RECREATION 

station. In the Main Gallery, visitors can see 

the fossils of ice-age mammals and ancient 

sea creatures that inhabited Central Florida 

millions of years ago. Outside the Main 

Gallery, two additional exhibits detail the 

“Story of Phosphate” and the history of 

Mulberry. The museum also has a special area 

where visitors can dig for small fossils and a 

train caboose that children can play in. 

In October 2011, neighboring Winter 

Haven will welcome a new theme park, 

LEGOLAND Florida. The new park will 

entertain families with interactive attractions, 

live shows, rides, restaurants, and gift 

shops, all on a beautiful 150-acre landscape. 

Everything about LEGOLAND Florida 

will be especially designed to stimulate 

children aged 2 to12.

Movies, Cultural 

Entertainment and Shopping 

There are several movie theaters in nearby 

Lakeland, Lake Wales and Winter Haven 

where you can see the newest releases. 

Lakeland, just 20 minutes from Mulberry, 

provides many opportunities for cultural 

entertainment. The Polk Museum of Art, 

features displays of all kinds of art from 

many different countries and time periods.

GOVERNMENT 

Mulberry’s government provides many 

different services to the public. The 

City Clerk maintains city documents, 

preserves historical records, responds 

to public record requests, and performs 

public relation duties. The Finance 

Department safeguards and manages 

the city’s financial assets. The Utilities 

Department manages the city’s water, 

treats its waste water, and installs and maintains 

water and sewage lines. The Code Enforcement and 

Building Department inspects Mulberry’s buildings 

and makes sure that they are up to code. And the 

Facilities and Recreation Department oversees 

Mulberry’s parks and playgrounds.

Mulberry has big plans for its future. 

As Tampa continues to expand eastward, 

Mulberry will continue to grow as 

newcomers look for a place with a low 

cost of living that is close to the city. 

To prepare for this growth, the city of 

Mulberry has several projects planned. 

These include new developments and 

renovating existing areas. 

For example, the city plans to develop 

some of the reclaimed land from former 

phosphate mines into a new, 6,000-home 

mixed-use residential area. And when new 

residents come, there will be a need for 

new churches, schools, and recreational 

areas. The city hopes that this will stimulate 


MULBERRY TOMORROW 

economic growth. In the future the city 

plans to revive the historic district and make 

it into a commercial crossroads for south 

central Polk County. 

But perhaps the most ambitious project 

coming soon is the new Streamsong Resort. 

The Mosaic Company is building the resort 

on reclaimed land. Projected to open in 2013, 

this new resort will feature two 18-hole golf 

courses, a full-service spa, three restaurants, 

and a variety of outdoor activities. 

Mulberry is a town that values its past and 

prepares for the future, with a clear vision 

of creating a better town for themselves and 

their children.
