PROVINCE CELEBRATES CAPITAL GAINSCREATING A BITMORE HISTORYTWO Brethren from our Province added alittle bit of history at April’s annualinvestiture of United Grand Lodge atGreat Queen Street, London.W Bro James H Newman wasappointed Acting Senior Grand Deaconand W Bro Gerald A J Brown ActingJunior Grand Deacon in recognition oftheir services with two of the centralcharities. This is the first occasion for over 20years that the Province of Yorkshire, WestRiding has provided Acting Deacons inthe same year. And a further plus is thatwith W Bro Dr Simon Lindley, ZetlandLodge No 1311, being re-appointedGrand Organist, Province has three ActingOfficers to restore what was once acommon occurrence. For example, at the annual investiturein April 1925 the Rt Hon ViscountLascelles, KG, DSO was appointed andinvested as Senior Grand Warden and atthe same meeting the Rt Rev Bishop ofBradford, Arthur Perowne, DD, (PentalphaLodge No 974), was appointed GrandChaplain and W Bro Sir Bernard Sugden,of Zetland Lodge No 603, was appointedJunior Grand Deacon. Assuch, he has been intimately involved fornearly eight years. He was chairman of the CharityTreasurers' Group, which wrote theoriginal Cost Report in 2005,recommending and identifying the costsavings from moving the central charitiesinto Freemasons’ Hall and also preparedthe business plan for the Centre forMasonic Research at the University ofSheffield in 2001. He was also chairmanof the Sheffield Masonic Hall Company forfive years to 2009.Before becoming treasurer of the RMBIin 2004, James was treasurer of theFriends of Connaught Court for five years.W Bro Newman said: “As the charity isthe only one of the four central charities, which is a real live working/operationalcharity, rather than just a grant-giving one,it suits my business background well. Theturnover of the Charity is £50million, it has18 care homes, 1,000 residents and itemploys over 1,000 people with assets ofover £110m, a big organisation by anystandards. It is an honour and pleasure tobe able to contribute and enjoy doing soto such a worthy Masonic cause.”AT the Quarterly Communication of UnitedGrand Lodge in March, W Bro Newman hadthe honour of proposing the re-election ofM W Bro HRH The Duke of Kent, KG, asGrand Master for the ensuing year. With a long family history inFreemasonry, James was Initiated intoHadassah Lodge No 4871, in 1974,becoming Master in 1992. NIGHT OF NOSTALGIA AS BRITANNIA LODGERESPECT FOR THEPAST AND HOPEFOR THE FUTURE!A VENERABLE, lively and respectedLodge, was how the Provincial GrandChaplain described Britannia Lodge No139 when it celebrated a rich andhistorical 250 years at a specialanniversary meeting at Tapton MasonicHall, Sheffield on 30 March this year. The 160 present were treated to a rarenight of nostalgia and anacknowledgement of their important rolein modern-day Freemasonry, withprincipal guest R W Bro Air Marshal SirRonald Stuart-Paul KBE, Junior GrandWarden, expressing “sheer delight at thewarmth of his welcome into a fantasticProvince.”Britannia Lodge was Founded in 1761and given Warrant No 85 by the AntientsGrand Lodge. In 1765 the Lodge appliedto the Moderns Grand Lodge for aWarrant and, under No 340, it held aLodge at the Rose and Crown in theMarket Place, Sheffield.Following membership fluctuations,Britannia amalgamated with the AntientsLodge No 72 and met in the Freemasons’Rooms in Paradise Square.Changes caused by the Union in 1813were adopted, though it is worthrecording that the Lodge’s present ritual, made definitive in 1921, is neitherEmulation nor Old York – it has best beenFor Everything Forddescribed as “Britannia working.”Phoenix No 904 in Rotherham wasBritannia’s first offspring in 1862 and atthe present day there are some 20daughter or granddaughter Lodges!Britannia enjoyed its centenary in 1865but after some discussion over its earlyWorkings, United Grand Lodge agreedthat the bi-centenary could be celebratedin 1961.W Bro R E Farris, Master, waspleased to present a cheque for£4,500 to R W Bro Clayton for theProvincial Grand Master’s Fund, making a total donation of £7,500from Britannia Lodge, including£3,000 given to West RidingMasonic Charities over the last twoyears. The 1960s brought a move from thethen Surrey Street premises to Tapton, in1967, following a laying of the FoundationStone in June 1965 by the then ProvincialGrand Master, R W Bro H Clifford Smith. The 250th anniversary occasion waspresided over by the Master, W Bro RogerE Farris, PAGDC, PPJGW, whose booklet“A History of Britannia Lodge – 1961-2011” contains many other absorbingfacts and figures. In the Temple, current Lodge secretaryW Bro Robert Bailey and two of hispredecessors, W Bros James Ogley andMatthew Love, provided interesting andilluminating snippets gleaned from thepast 250 years. And, as W Bro The Rev Canon KennethJ Phillips, Provincial Grand Chaplain, concluded during his delightful and wellresearchedOration:“Time rushes inexorably on, withscarcely time to appreciate the present, let alone the richness of the past! But asfor a few moments we enjoy what we havealready experienced, so we must look tothe future. It is out there!“In a time when earthquakes, eruptions, tsunamis, floods, tornadoes andpestilence abound - all and more are aconstant reminder to those who wouldsee, of the everlasting need for charity. And I was deeply impressed when threeChristmases ago a tsunami struck aroundthe south Pacific, and £100,000 wasimmediately despatched by ‘the Masons’,as some parts of the press put it.Succeeding disasters have been met withsimilar urgency.“At the same time, in this generationwhen so much is already asked of its busyworkers, we also see the need of a timededicated to fellowship and recreation, beyond anything that can be offered bycomputer, mobile telephone, “Facebook”or any other of the electronic gadgets weare bombarded with.“ Our labour has its serious side and itslighter moments in equal measure, and allis subsumed under the commission ‘to behappy and communicate happiness.’ Ofthis you can be certain: that you can beproud of being a Freemason, and if youare, then let us continue to make moreMasons!”At the splendid Festive Board, the R WProvincial Grand Master, John K Clayton,Plumbing and Heating Ltd36 Erringden Road, Mytholmroyd, Hebden Bridge, HX7 5ARNew & Used Vehicle Sales,Service, Parts, RapidfitOver 80 years with FORDBurgessFord – KeighleyTel: 01535 667711Fax: 01535 610355Dalton LaneKeighley BD21 4JHwww.burgessford.co.uk• Boiler Installations/Repairs (Natural Gas, LPG and Oil)• Full Central Heating Systems• Unvented Hot Water Cylinders• Servicing and Landlord Gas Safety checks• Bathroom Suites Installation and Consultation• Powerflushing from £250.00• General Plumbing and Heating repairs• Airsource Heat Pumps• SolarAll offers are subject to change and can be withdrawn without notice.CONTACT:David WrightTel: 01422 886473Mob: 07795 284681Email: d.wright980@btinternet.comOVER 40 YEARS PLUMBING AND HEATING EXPERIENCESt. JOHNS CHAPTER No. 827 Meeting on the 3rd Tuesday in Jan, Mar (Installation), May, Jul, Sep & Nov.Halifax Road, Dewsbury WF13 2BS PROUD SUPPORTERS OF THIS PAGE OF THE WHITE ROSE MASONIC NEWS.6

SAD END OF AN ERAAS DORIC LODGENo 4073 CLOSES . . .MEMBERS of Doric Lodge No 4073 didnot look forward to their regular meetingon Monday 22 November 2010. After anumber of years of steady decline and theincreasing average age of members, itwas agreed, reluctantly, that the Warrantshould be returned to the M W The GrandMaster and that this would be their lastmeeting. The members, together with 50-plusguests, welcomed the R W ProvincialGrand Master, John K. Clayton, and aProvincial deputation comprising W BroStewart G Carley, Assistant ProvincialGrand Master, W Bro John Rushworth,Provincial Grand Secretary and W BroRobert W Bowhill, Provincial GrandDirector of Ceremonies, at the MasonicHall, Charles Street Bingley. The R W Provincial Grand Masteraccepted the gavel and listened as theBrethren approved donations to somefour different charities and the election ofthree trustees, appointed to wind up theaffairs of the Lodge.W Bro Michael D Edmondson, who hadfor many years been the Lodge’s charitysteward, presented a brief history of theLodge. He explained how it came intobeing by the need of the members ofAcacia No 2321, Doric’s Mother Lodge. They had grown so large that progressionhad become very difficult and to form anew Lodge was the best solution. The first10 years had seen continued growth witha number of double ceremonies being thenorm. He explained how the Lodge had somany pieces of table silver by the effortsof the Stewards of the Lodge and hethanked the present members of Acaciafor their support in recent months. The R W Provincial Grand Masteraccepted collars of office and letters ofresignation from the Brethren, before theMaster, W Bro James A K Shallcross, gave the last address to the officers. Hemade a most moving tribute to recentlydeparted Brethren and delivered whatwas a very emotional address with dignity.W Bro Shallcross surrendered theWarrant to R W Bro Clayton, whoaccepted it, with sadness, on behalf of theM W The Grand Master. The Master alsohanded in his collar and Hall Stone LodgeJewel, saying it had been worn with prideby Masters since its presentation inUnited Grand Lodge by the late ProGrand Master, the Right Hon LordAmpthill, in 1924.Thus ended 90 years of Doric Lodge No4073. All who had played a part in its finalmeeting did so with sincerity and Brotherlylove. This was a sad day but the sadnesswas not on open display. The FestiveBoard proved that Doric Lodge truly hadbeen a “Happy Lodge.”•Picture shows W Bro Edmondsonpresenting one of several chequesdistributed by Doric on its closure. FOOD FOR THOUGHTBy Assistant Provincial GrandMaster W Bro Colin DentNO - if you thought that this is an articleon Masonic Festive Boards you would bevery much mistaken, although its contentsmay take some digesting. In January this year I completed threeyears as an Assistant Provincial GrandMaster of this Province, a milestone whichgave me cause for reflection. At the outset my area of responsibilitywas the Provincial CommunicationsCommittee. Earlier this year I relinquishedthat position and assumed thechairmanship of West Riding MasonicActivities Ltd, which oversees thepublication of this magazine. You may, therefore, be forgiven for assuming that itwould be one of these important areasthat gives me cause to reflect. No, it is neither. It is the present level ofmembership in the Province. In order toredress this matter of concern we have toaddress three areas.Resignations: Brethren who no longerattend the Lodge and the difficulty someLodges have in attracting suitable newcandidates. We need to look seriously athow we can improve recruitment, how wecan drastically reduce the number ofmembers resigning, particularly in theearly years, and how we can encouragenon-attenders to return. At the risk of incurring the wrath of theBrethren, I ask the question ‘are we surewe are doing all we can in these, mostimportant areas’.The membership of the Province ofYorkshire, West Riding in 1989 was10,919. At the end of 2010 it fell below7,000, an average reduction of approx 30 %.If the decline continues at the same rate,in 20 years time there will be just over5,000 Masons in this Province. If we are to ensure that Freemasonryprospers and flourishes in the future wemust all take responsibility for improvingthe membership and also do everythingwe can to encourage lapsed members toreturn and play an active part in LodgeactivitiesRegrettably, some Lodges may feelthat they have reached the point of noreturn. However, before surrendering aWarrant they must ensure that they haveused all the tools at their disposal toavoid this situation. We have for some years spoken of thethree Rs - Retention, Retrieval andRecruitment. The first two are very muchin the hands of individual Lodges and itsmembers.W Bro Colin DentMentoring plays an important part inensuring that a Brother remains amember of the Lodge, and it does not endwhen he becomes a Master Mason. Thementoring scheme has had somesuccess but it needs to be adopteduniversally in order to reduce the numberof new Masons resigning, particularly inthe early years. Remember, every one ofus has this important responsibility! There are many reasons why Brethrencease to regularly attend Lodge, but weare not always aware of these. To counterthis we should always be incommunication with them, encouragingtheir return. Too often we are not aware ofthe circumstances and difficulties of aBrother until it is too late and regularcontact may enable us to discover andresolve any concerns. As Freemasons,we should not only be caring about othersbut also each other.Do we accept resignations too readily?Should we, in the event of a Brotheroffering his resignation, interview him toestablish the real reasons for thisdecision? We may be able to help himovercome any difficulties he has andencourage him to, at least, reconsider hisdecision. We interview candidates whenthey join, why not do the same when theywish to resign? In the case of recruitment there aremany avenues open to Lodges toimprove their membership, one of thesebeing gavel/open evenings. To assist Lodges the R W ProvincialGrand Master has recently appointed WBro Andrew Brown, of Rokeby Lodge No6301, as the Provincial Co-ordinator forgavel/open evenings. These occasionscan be extremely successful, if organisedcorrectly. However, afterbeing taken a Prisonerof War by the Italiansearly in the North Africa campaign, hewas interned in a POW camp atSulmona, Italy, where a camp orchestrawas formed. The first instruments obtainedthrough the International Red Crosswere all taken by more skilled musiciansand it was not until more werepurchased from the locals using ‘camp’money paid to prisoners, that Bernardacquired and learned to play themandolin. Having plenty of time ontheir hands the orchestra became quiteproficient by teaching each other andconcerts were staged for both prisonersand captors. After being released by the Italiansupon their capitulation in September1943, all the instruments had to be leftbehind as they tried to reach allied linesand evade re-capture by the occupyingGerman forces. Unfortunately, Bernardwas unsuccessful, he was re-capturedby the Germans and imprisoned inSilesia until eventually liberated by theadvancing Russian army in 1945.It was not until 1960 that Bernardrenewed his acquaintance with theMandolin when he bought a secondhand one. By then he was playingclarinet as a semi-professionalmusician in a local dance band called,“The Donoghue Orchestra” so onlyplayed it for his personal enjoyment. However, in 1980 his wife Marjoriebought him a brand new mandolin forhis 60th birthday and he played itthereafter professionally and incompetitions. Now, perhaps too old to withstandthe rigours of playing professionally, heis passing on his skills voluntarily toothers through the AlwoodleyCommunity Orchestra which meets atthe Alwoodley Primary School, Leeds, near to where he and Marjorie now live. The orchestra is open to people of allages and meets on a Wednesdayevening.Bernard was Initiated into GoderichLodge in 1963 and was Master in 1981.Picture courtesy of Yorkshire Post Newspapers.WHEN YOU CAN’T SEE THE WOODFOR THE TREESSound and Sympathetic help fromFinn GledhillSolicitorsHalifax and Hebden BridgeYour Contacts: David Lee (Notary Public) Marc GledhillTel: 01422 330000 and 84245111

FAIRFAX CHAPTER MARKSITS PROUD CENTENARY . . .WHEN Fairfax Chapter No 3255 celebrated its centenary at theMasonic Hall, Westbourne House, Otley, last November, one ofthe highlights was an Oration by Provincial Third Grand Principal,E Comp The Rev Frank A Chappell.E Comp Chappell traced the history of the Fairfax family fromthe early 16th century, revealing how Sir William Fairfax metIsabel Thwaites: “an orphan, the daughter and heiress ofThomas Thwaites, of Denton and Askwith, just up the road fromhere and also of estates in the city of York, Bishophill and DavyHall.“Isabel was under the guardianship of the Abbess of theCistercian nunnery at Appleton, near York. In the course ofhunting and visiting friends in the area, young Isabel had metand fallen in love with William Fairfax. The Abbess, who hopedIsabel would take vows and that her wealth might top up theConvent’s finances, took a jaundiced view of Isabel Thwaites’behaviour and confined her to the nunnery.“Thomas Fairfax took the matter into his own hands; gathereda small band of friends together; forced entry into the Nunneryand carried off Isabel in triumph – they were married in BoltonPercy Church in 1518.E Comp Chappell, continued: “Companions, it is worthremembering that had it not been for another great love affairsome 2,500 years earlier, between King David and Bathsheba, there might have been no King Solomon and no Freemasonryas we know it today; three love affairs then; 1910 - the Foundersof this Chapter in love with the Holy Royal Arch; 1518 WilliamFairfax in love with Isabel Thwaites, the rich heiress; and Davidand Bathsheba.“In 1759; when Charles Gregory Fairfax, the 9th ViscountFairfax acquired some property in York, that is now known asFairfax House, he employed a Yorkshire Architect, John Carr, whoproduced a classic Georgian House in Castlegate, the lanewhich runs between Cliffords’ Tower and the Jorvik centre in York.In fact it is opposite the Castlegate Masonic Hall, which is also a fine architectural feature of the area.“Within 100 years, as the Fairfax family moved on, the Fairfax’smagnificent mansion became derelict; becoming a billiard halland a Cinema in the 1920s. The more recent history isreminiscent of our Chapter ritual. There was no sign ofZerubbabel, Haggai, and Joshua, not of any Sojourners; but YorkCity Council, the York City Trust, and Noel Terry, the chocolatierfamous for his Chocolate Orange came together in the 1980sand restored Fairfax House to its original glory, even surpassingperhaps, that of the original house.“One of the great things that the Holy Royal Arch teaches usis not to lose heart; that what seems desolate and forlorn, evenimpossible, can be rebuilt; that glory can emerge anew out ofruins; when people care, when they have charity and love thengreat things can happen. ”Fairfax Chapter, founded at Guiseley in July 1910, welcomedmembers and visitors totalling 100 Companions, with the M EGrand Superintendent, John K Clayton, heading a ProvincialDelegation.E Comp Michael T George Powell read a short history of theChapter and also a letter from HM the Queen, expressing herbest wishes and congratulations.E Comp John Rushworth, Provincial Scribe E, read theCentenary Charter before it was presented to the First Principal, visit www.masonicswords.co.ukto view our current stock & purchase yourantique sword with a little history.12OLICANA CHAPTER No.1522 Meeting on the 1st Mon in Oct, Nov, Dec, Feb and March Installation last Mon in AprilCunliffe Road, Ilkley LS29 9DZ PROUD SUPPORTERS OF THIS PAGE OF THE WHITE ROSE MASONIC NEWS.

GEARING FOR NEWLODGE FOR LEEDS!SINCE the Masonic Buildings in GreatGeorge Street, Leeds were vacated therehas been no representation for CraftMasonry in the city centre. The R W Provincial Grand Master hasgiven his consent to a Petition beingsubmitted to the M W The Grand Masterfor the Consecration of a new Lodge, which would meet in the city centre, at theLS1 Club (formerly the Leeds Club), onAlbion Place, Leeds. The purpose of the proposed Lodgewould be to attract candidates, particularly younger men, who work inindustry and commerce in the city centre, and other potential members who live inthe centre of Leeds. The benefits to themjoining this new Lodge will include:The convenience of being able to getthere straight from work;Good transport links making traveleasier if not using a car;Close to home with travelling kept to aminimum. Also there are a number of Freemasonswho work in the centre of Leeds, whoseFreemasonry is practised in either otherparts of the Province or in other Provincesand London. Some of these Brethrentravel to Leeds on a Monday morning andreturn to their home on a Friday eveningstaying in hotels/flats in the centre ofLeeds in between. A result of this is thatthey have little if no opportunity to practisetheir Masonry.W Bro Keith MadeleyAdditionally, there are men working inLeeds, both Masons and Non-Masons forwhom travelling to the outskirts of Leeds, because of transport arrangements, tovisit a Masonic Lodge is consideredinconvenient, as their home is in theopposite direction, or they live in the citycentre. The potential Founders feel that nothaving a Lodge in the city centre resultsin potential candidates, who work and livein the centre of Leeds, being missed.Additionally, there could well be Brethrenwho have resigned from their Lodges, forthe same reasons, who could be attractedback.Over 30 Brethren from this and otherProvinces have said they wish to beconsidered as Founders, together withothers who desire to be joining membersIt is not the intention for the Lodge to be“elitist” or a “dining Lodge” but it isenvisaged that it will be a working Lodge, meeting four times a year in March, June,September and December. It is expectedthat the work will involve all theceremonies associated with CraftMasonry.A number of potential candidates havealready expressed an interest. The Lodgewould meet on the second Thursdaystarting at 6.00pm. This is considered tobe a convenient start time for thosecoming from work in Leeds, and as suchwill ensure an early finish to enable all toget home at a reasonable hour. The Founders are most grateful that theoldest Lodge in Leeds, the Lodge ofFidelity No 289, has kindly agreed to actas sponsoring LodgeThe proposed Founding Master isW Bro Keith Madeley, of Lodge of PeaceNo 3988 and the Metropolitan GL JubileeMasters No 2712 and the proposedFounding Secretary is W Bro Ian R Lewis,of Legiolium Lodge No 1542 and theLeeds and District Lodge of InstalledMasters No 7918.• W Bro Madeley, a former chairman ofthe Provincial Media Committee, wasdelighted to be awarded the MBE in H MThe Queen’s New Year Honours inrecognition of his charitable work withHRH Prince Charles’s Prince’s Trust andHRH The Duke of York’s CommunityInitiative. PGM’S PLEA TO CARE MSUCCESSFUL RE-LAUNCH FORWEBSITE – LODGES URGEDTO ACT ON FALLING NUMBERSTHE R W Provincial Grand Master, John K Clayton, has made animpassioned plea for Freemasons to care more for one another;announced a successful re-launch for the provincial website; pointedto both problems and positives in membership and issued a cautionaryword regarding expectations for honours. In his Address to the annual meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge, infront of around 1,200 Brethren at the delightful Royal Hall, Harrogate,R W Bro Clayton warmly congratulated Brethren receiving a firstappointment, or promotion. He said: whilst this may be the one and only honour some of youreceive, I urge you to look towards the future and continue to work foryour Lodge and the Province in anticipation of recognition for that workbut much more important, self satisfaction.“ I would caution about working simply to obtain an honour.Freemasonry has only three principles in Brotherly Love, Relief andTruth. Honours are not mentioned anywhere in our ritual.R W Bro Clayton referred to a net loss of 206 members Provincewide. “The optimists amongst us would say that is only, on average, one member per Lodge. But how I wish that it were 206 gains.”75 YEARS AT THE ROYAL HALLPROVINCE is to celebrate a 75-year association with the splendidRoyal Hall next year.R W Bro Clayton announced that a substantial charitable donationwill be made to the Royal Hall Restoration Trust for the developmentof the Heritage Lounge.“This Lounge will house, amongst other items, a permanentexhibition on Freemasonry, with particular emphasis on the Masonicassociation with the Hall, Harrogate and Yorkshire. It will be the onlypermanent exhibition on Freemasonry outside London open to thegeneral public,“ he saidThe PGM urged Lodges to bealive to falling membership. “If theyare, and report the same toProvince, then maybe help wouldbe at hand and disaster avoided.Don’t wait until the 11th hour whenrescue would doubtless beimpossible.“ Bro Andrew Brown has beenappointed, for want of a betterword, Provincial Organiser of‘open evenings’ and already over20 such evenings are on his bookspreparing for such a night. Don’tleave it too late. Be alive to what ishappening in your Lodge.“On the subject of membership,it isn’t all doom and gloom, since73.6% of Initiates were under theage of 50, with 39.7% fallingbetween 21 and 40 years. TheseThe R W Provincial Grand MasteBrethren need to be recognised asthe lifeblood of Freemasonry. Lodges need to keep their interest butbeware not to give all the work to the youngsters. Don’t cast the PastMasters aside entirely. Both ends of the age and “seniority” spectrumhave an important part to play.”R W Bro Clayton highlighted a growing concern when he said:Brethren, I have become all too well aware that whilst we are very goodin caring for the needs of non masons, and that of course is part ofour culture, we are not always as good as we ought to be at lookingafter one another.“Recently, I received a letter from a Brother about his Provincialhonours. He said, and I quote:‘I recognise that my attendance at my Lodge over recent years hasbeen negligible, however, I have had both personal and businessproblems, and no one in the Lodge has ever contacted me to find outwhy I was not attending . . . in the true spirit of Masonry I find it hard tobelieve that this has happened.’“Brethren, I am both saddened and angry that this is still happeningin my Province. I pose this question to you all - when did you lastcontact a Brother who didn’t come to the Lodge?“I think it is most opportune that I am launching a new initiative‘Freemasons Care - for One Another’. This, of course, is on the backJudith Hardaker, daughter of the late W Bro HarryLupton, and Terry Wise, representing RiponCommunity Hospital, pictured with the PGMHelen Linsell and Duncan Bedson, of Dance UnitedTHE R W Provincial Grand Master proudlyannounced the fourth year of major grants fromthe PGM’s Fund, totalling £100,000 each year.Designed for larger projects and to supplementquarterly grants, R W Bro Clayton expressed hisgratitude to Brethren for donating so generously.“My heartfelt thanks for your support, you canbe rightly proud that since the PGM’s Fundbegan in 1987, over £2m has been given toworthy causes. This included £240,000 from myFund last year.“Not a penny came from the general public, itwas all down to you, your family and friends anddespite the current economic climate yourdonations to charity last year were well over£400,000,” said the PGM.THIS year’s recipients were:Goole Gymnastics Club - £10,000: formedin 1983 and occupying its current premises in thecentre of Goole since 1998, the club acceptsmembers from the age of three, and currently hassix dedicated coaches. ORE FOR ONE ANOTHERof our very successful and ongoing‘Freemasonry Cares for You’campaign.“I want all Lodges to take positivesteps to ensure that contact ismade with those who haven’tattended. Brethren, I throw out achallenge to each and every one ofyou to take time out to make thatcontact, particularly if apologieshave not been received.“This is a simple step and should,of course, go hand in hand with thementoring scheme. Indeed, someLodges account for absentees, andcertainly some of our members areused to this practice in otherOrders.“Brethren, we are a family andneed to be aware of difficultiesr enters the Royal Hall with his Acting Officers amongst our own. I have saidbefore that resignation is rarely aspur-of-the-moment decision. If we are vigilant, we should seedifficulties arising and, hopefully, be proactive in helping a memberthrough what he perceives as a difficult time.“The longer we stay away from our Lodge, the more difficult it is togo back. Don’t let it happen. Don’t leave it until it is too late. We shouldalways be able to account for the health and well being of everyBrother. Show him we care.”R W Bro Clayton went on to praise the expertise and work of BrosKevin Gould, Peter Thornton and David Clough, for providing theProvincial Website with a new look.“I think you will now find it attractive and user friendly. As with mostorganisations, the power of the internet is unquestionable. This is noless true in Freemasonry.“This Province was one of the first to embrace this technology. Wehave taken the opportunity to redesign the website, giving it a moremodern feel and making it more accessible to a wider audience. I ampleased that today I am in a position to officially launch this new look. Please visit www.wrprovince.net“Brethren, the website is yours, but to keep it alive and interesting,we need to ensure that it is updated with articles and news items. CHANGING OF THE GUARD!THE Changing of the Guard is a time honoured affair - a militaryceremony that reminds us of the unending circle of life, thestandard set for tasks we have ahead of us and of those guardianswe are to replace that carefully went before us . . .Amphibious Lodge No 258 , eager to mark the changing of ITSguard, was pleased when the Master, W Bro John Wainwright, presented retiringAssistant ProvincialGrand Master W BroStewart G Carley with abeautifully framed printof the new AmphibiousLodge banner as atoken of the Lodge’sgratitude for histireless work in Area 1Saltaire based ‘Koot’of the Province andfor all the help andBrotherly Love he hasshown the Lodgeover the recent years.Signed by the banner artist himself, Saltaire based ‘Koot’, who isW Bro John Wainwright presents The APGM with a tokennot usually famed for his Masonic depictions, rather for quite the opposite, for hisaward winning punk and heavy metal record sleeve design work. The presentation to W Bro Carley was another marker in a long process that hasculminated in one of the most beautiful and unique banners in EnglishFreemasonry today.Having hung on the wall inside the Masonic Hall in Heckmondwike since 1850,the original, curiously painted Amphibious banner, was recently removed after much consideration for the first time in over150 years and carried, ever so carefully, to the workshop ofleading Harrogate art restorer David Everingham.Once safely removed from behind its antique frame andglass, David set about the task of cleaning what he described asthe most fragile thing he had everThe Master, Wardens, APGM and Prov Chaplain, banner dedicationtouched. After careful cleaning and even more carefulexamination, a Nile crocodile was found on the original banner, unseen by any living Lodge member, it having hidden behind years ofdirt.Armed with X-rays of the old banner, Koot was able to create the NEWLodge banner, based on two Nile crocodiles, carved in Yorkshire Stone, abanner that will lead Amphibious Lodge into the future whilstkeeping a foot in the past. The new Lodge bannerAMPHIBIOUS LODGE No. 258 IS PROUD TO SUPPORT THIS PAGE OF THE WHITE ROSE MASONIC NEWSMeeting on the 3rd Wednesday of each month Freemasons Hall, Market Street, Heckmondwike. NEW BANNER FORAN OLD ANDRESPECTED LODGETHE Lodge of Harmony No 275, Founded in1789, and re-dedicated as a daylight Lodgeas recently as 2000, has had many largecelebrations over the years – witness its bicentenaryin 1989 - and its specialambience enhances such events.Thursday, 3 February 2011, atGreenhead Masonic Hall, was an occasionwhich proved no exception, for the Master,W Bro George Foster, had invited W BroColin Dent, APGM for Area 2, to perform theCeremony of Dedication for a replacementbanner.W Bro Dent was supported by W Bro TheRev Canon K J Phillips, Provincial GrandChaplain and W Bro Michael Butterworth,Deputy Provincial Grand Director ofThe Banner in close up, with W Bro Foster andHarmony Grand Officer W Bro John BradleyCeremonies, together with a large numberof guests, Province-wide, together with alarge gathering from the Province of EastLancashire. The Banner bearer was W Bro GeorgeBastow, with an escort comprising W BrosTrevor Sykes, Gerald Newsome, AnthonyParker, Roy Allonby, Anthony Ward andWilliam Daws. The entrance of W Bro Dent, accompanied by W Bro Phillips and 10Grand Officers in Full Dress regalia and theTemple packed tight with Provincial Officers,Masters, Past Masters and Master Masons, provided a magnificent burst of colour.W Bro Dent having accepted the gavel, dedicated the Banner to the Lodge ofHarmony in his usual erudite way, andhanded it to the Master, W Bro Foster.W Bro Kenneth J Phillips, Provincial GrandChaplain, during a delightful and compellingOration, said:“Banners, standards, flags and pennantshave had significance throughout the ages.“We see them in pictures of ancient warsand state occasions. Tales of gloriousoccasions abound, where the course of abattle has been changed by the bravery ofone or another holding a Standard aloft andrallying the warriors to its cause, when theymight otherwise have failed and fled.”We see them in times of peace, onceremonial occasions, being paraded withpride before all, bearing for all to see thePicture shows W Bro Philips and W Bro Dent with the banner, accompanied byW Bro Foster and members of the Lodge of Harmonymarks and designs of the folk theyrepresent. And we see them when they arelaid up in Cathedral and Church, moulderingaway almost to cobwebs, and yet still havinga glory of their own, silently communing withone another over past glories that each hasseen.“And this, Brethren of the Lodge ofHarmony, is your Banner, which – along withyour Charter is yours alone - and tells ofwhat it is that makes your Lodge special, and why you have joined it!” So, it is with a sense both of pride and ofhumility that I approach the dedication of thisLodge Banner tonight. I approach it withpride because a new Lodge Banner is beingdedicated, as a symbol of our MasonicFellowship, and to the glory of the GAOTU.“So, may your Lodge Banner be for you,not merely a beautifully worked hanging -which undoubtedly it is - but also a sourceof inspiration to you all, as you go on in yourwork for the good of the Society of which youare all members.”The Festive Board was an excellentrepast, with W Bro Dent delivering athought-provoking and sometimes amusingspeech, much appreciated by the Brethren.Everyone present had a most enjoyable dayeven to the extent of attracting two enquiriesfor membership of the Lodge!43
