The 2004buck season produced 63,873 deeras opposed to the 56,347 deer thatwere harvested during 2005. Hunterswith the proper stamps andlicenses could also participate in theconcurrent antlerless deer huntingopportunities during the two-weekbuck hunting season in 4l counties,MOUNTAIN BOYTURKEY CALLSChevronGasBy Todd Zickafooseor portions thereof. In this earlyportion of the 2005 antlerless deerhunting season, 27,790 deer wereharvested as opposed to the 2004season harvest of 44,297 deer. Thisrepresented a 37 percent declineduring the early antlerless deer huntingseason. This decline in the number ofbucks harvested during the twoweekbuck season has been creditedto a number of things, such aspoor mast in the woods and a largenumber of winter kill, whereas thedecline in the number of antlerlessdeer harvested was reported to be adirect result of more conservativedeer hunting regulations, along withthere being fewer counties that wereopen to antleress deer huntingThe Department of Natural Resourcesalso credits the fact thatthere was a reduced bag limit inmany areas. Wed. Thu. 3-9Near Stonewall Jackson Lake304-884-6561“Quality WorkAt AReasonableRate”of deer in regions of the state thatare considered to be over-populated,according to their White-TailedDeer Operational Plan.In this hunterʼs opinion, it is plainto see that the real reason the numberof deer harvested statewide isdecreasing is that we do not havethe deer. The reason we do not havethe deer is that people are killingtoo many, along with some of thereasons that the DNR states. Evenwith this yearʼs “reduced” bag limit,a hunter could kill approximatelyeight deer. With this early seasonantlerless hunt coinciding with thebuck season, a lot of young bucksand button bucks are getting shotbecause they are being mistakenfor antlerless deer. Therefore, at thecurrent rate, the stateʼs deer populationcould very well be down tonothing in just a number of years. It is apparent to this hunter thatwe need to go back to separatingantlerless and antlered hunting season,as well as reduce the amount ofantlerless deer a hunter may harvest.Antlerless season might even besuspended for a year or two, in orderto give the population a chanceto rebuild in some areas; however,it has been apparent to me that the4 PondsOPEN7 Days A WeekCabin & CamperRentalschances for separating antlerlessand antlered season during the firsttwo-weeks of hunting season are notvery good, according to a DNR officer. One of the main reasons is therevenue the state collects from outof-statehunters who come to WestVirginia to hunt. The main reasonthe state runs these seasons togetheris that if an out-of-state hunter doesnot kill a buck at first, he can at leastkill a doe before having to leave. As long as the out-of-state hunter isable to obtain meat for his freezer, that hunter will continue to return toWest Virginia to hunt, which meansmore money for the state.Another reason, according to theDNR preliminary data for the 2005season, is that deer populations exceededmanagement objectives inseven counties.According to Frank Jezioro, thedirector of the Division of NaturalResources, the stateʼs deer managementprogram is designed to beresponsive to the changing populationconditions and can be adjustedannually to regulate the number ofdeer harvested. Henceforth, theBrown Itʼs Down” season will remainin effect until the DNR feelsthat the state has the proper numberFamily Fishing & CampingCatfish - Bass - Trout - BluegillCamping Daily or Year Round~ We Now Have Hybrid Striped Bass ~Rt. 50 Between Bridgeport & Grafton304-265-1000 Rt. 2 Box 290 Grafton, WV 26354Sept.. 2006 ~ Page 5Game HeadsRugsTurkeysLife Size MountsNoveltiesEuropean MountsJANE LEW,WVeMail toms_ taxidermy@msn.comof deer.Editors Note: High gasoline pricesmay also have had an adverse effecton hunting hours last season. This 6 point was shot by MikeMueller . AI spreadsquickly from bird-to-bird contact, and migratory birds can spread thecontagious disease over hundredsof miles as they travel. There is notmuch a bird farmer can do about migratorybirds, but you can try to keepyour birds away from other birds, such as other bird farmerʼs flocks.Be sure to have any new birds testedfor Avian influenza before addingthem to your flock. It is a law in the State of WestVirginia that all birds imported intothe state must have an official healthcertificate, signed by a licensedveterinarian in the state from whichthey came. Also, a wildlife importationpermit, from the Division ofNatural Resources, is required beforebirds or eggs are to be shipped. If importing eggs or game birds, aNational Poultry Improvement Plancertificate and an Avian influenza(AI) health certificate must also accompanythis form.Whom do you contact if youhave sick birds in your flock, andthey start dying? The main personyou need to talk to is the state vet,Dr. Bill Casto, who can be reachedthrough the Department of Agriculture,in Charleston, W. Va, or at theWVDA Poultry Health laboratory inMoorefield, W. Va. After you havecontacted him, he will usually cometo your location and take samples ofyour birds for testing. The sampleswill be tested for Avian influenzaand Exotic Newcastle disease at theWVDA Animal Health Diagnosticlaboratory in Charleston, or at thelaboratory in Moorefield. In most cases, it takes from a fewdays to a week or more to get the resultsback. It has been myexperience that finding a game birdvet in West Virginia is difficult, althoughmost vets will look at yourbirds and take your case. will be. The best place to find helpis at a laboratory that specializes ingame birds. The State of West Virginiahas a poultry laboratory thatcan diagnosis your game birds, butthey donʼt specialize in them.Probably one of the best gamebird laboratories in the country isat Penn State University. If youwant to get quick results, this is thelaboratory you need to use. Theperson you need to contact is Dr.Eva Wallner-Pendleton, and she canbe reached at Penn State by calling(8l4) 863-0837 and asking for theAnimal Diagnostic Lab.I have sent samples to this laboratoryand received the results the nextday. They also advised me of whatmedicines I should use to treat thebirds. This lab will give you quickresults at a low cost, with the highestcost being in shipping the samplesby overnight express. I hope thisinformation will help you keephealthy game birds and get your sickbirds better.White Oak Game Farm, Ellamore,W. The bass thatWoodrum Lake received ranged insize from two to six inches. The Jackson County lake wasdrained completely in 2005 as theresult of damage done to a lowergate during a routine inspection.During the following winter theU.S. Department of Agriculture repairedthe gate and the lake beganto fill in late March. It currentlyneeds about four additional feet ofwater to be completely full.“So far this year Woodrum has receivedbluegill, fat head minnowsand largemouth bass,” Prestonsaid. “Other species that will be introducedinclude muskie and channelcatfish, which may be stockedthis fall.”While the lake was dry the DNR,with assistance from Muskies Inc.and B.A.S.S. members, took severalsteps to jump-start the developingfishery. “Last fall, approximately6,000 pounds of winter wheatseed, purchased by the NRCS, wasplanted along several sites withinthe dry lakebed,” Preston said.“During March, aquatic vegetationwas also planted.”Hundreds of soft stem bulrush, sago pondweed, and arrowheadplants were introduce in two areas.06 QuadFair ad slick B&W 7/27/06 3:32 PM Page 1To minimize loss of the developingplants, fences were constructedaround the planted areas. “Thesesites are located in two upper areasof Woodrum Lake and it is hopedthat these plants will supply seedsources for other areas within thelake. my little Bass Tracker to be returnedno worse for the wear. I thought,“Maybe I can teach this “TV fisherman”a thing or two about thisgame!”We started the day early right inthe middle of Charleston which inmy way of thinking is some of thebest fishing on the river. I tied on myfavorite grub for smallies and Clarencestarted with a tube so big thatit resembled a shredded inner tube.I thought, “Well, it looks like I mayhave been right. No self-respectingsmallmouth bass would ever considereating that wad of plastic!”One of the worst tasting substanceson the face of the Earth is Crow! And I ate a lot of it that day. Theman was a magician with a rodand reel. He caught bass, all threespecies on baits that I would havenever used for carp. When we experienceda short lull in the action,he slid a chunk of plastic on his hookthat looked like a wad of bad bubblegum that had been stuck under thetable for a year. I thought, “This isit! Heʼs finally cracked!” This unholyconglomeration was cast nextto a willow that I had been poundingwith my grubs and “Wham”here he comes with a good keeperlargemouth! The only dish that goes with crowis humble pie and on that day Ioverate! Last November, infact, I caught my largest white bassever, a 2.35-pound fish caught duringthe first severe cold snap of theyear. Air temperature was a blistery16 degrees. While Jack Frost was nipping atmy nose, the fish was quite comfortablein the warm water andlikely felt rejuvenated. The waterwas around 40 degrees warmerthan the air and that offered anotheradvantage to us both, oxygen-richwater. Cold air cools the surface ofthe water and as that water cools, itsinks and warm water rises to takeits place. The down current of cool waterdelivers oxygen-charged water tothe fish, which makes them moreactive and is one of Godʼs ways ofhelping them fatten up for a hardwinter. Many anglers switch to smallerbaits as the water cools and fish willfollow forage fish and mouths ofcreeks and backwater areas can beexcellent locations. With the actualdates for the tournaments setmonths in advance, anglers mustdeal with extremes in temperature, water clarity and fish activity. Formany anglers, river systems are afavorite destination to begin eachnew season. Wherever walleyesmay roam, river systems offer apredictable pattern as fish traveland concentrate to spawn. Whatarenâ€TMt predictable, however, are weather and river conditions.Nothing will shut down a hotriver bite like high runoff and novisibility. Four inches of snow orrain can muddy the water and literallyshut down the bite for weeks. For many river rats, the best wayto catch walleyes under such conditionsis to pack up and fish somewhereelse. For the professionalanglers that follow the tournamenttrail, however, packing up andtraveling to a better bite isnʼt anoption. Closeouts These On anglers are forced tomake 1999 adjustments Models and alter theirapproach. Catching walleyes whenvisibility is reduced to an inch isdifficult, but certainly not impossible.Richard LaCourse of Port Clinton,Ohio, has years of experiencefishing rivers, including muddyones. Regarding muddy-watertechniques, LaCourse treats themjust like any other tough fishingsituation when the walleyes turnfinicky, such as a cold front. Hebegins by downsizing his presentation, and then slows everythingdown. In a muddy river combined withswift current, such as the DetroitRiver at times, LaCourse advocateshandlining and polelining. “Pullingmy handline into the current allowsme to stall a bait while the currentkeeps it working right in front of afish” LaCourse said. “A walleyeʼssight is very limited in dirty water,so theyʼre not going to chase a bait5 feet. But theyʼll feel the vibrationof it and bite it out of reaction if iʼsright in front of them”The more current there is to workthe lure, then, the more effectivehandlining can be. “Not rocket science,LaCourse said” Itʼs just ancontinue to the next pageSept. 2006 ~ Page 33BOWTECHDIAMONDBOSSBROWNINGBOW-LISTICARCHERY SHOPCOMPLETE BOW SERVICEBOW & HUNTING ACCESSORIESYOUTH BOWS•CUSTOM ARROWS15105 MacCorkle Av. Most of the time, in muddywater, the brighter colors, such asorange, chartreuse and firetiger, will produce the best. The tight wobble of a classic RapalaFloating Minnow is often thelure of choice for a handlining presentation, but diving plugs, particularlyshallow-running Shad Raps, are also useful for this technique.LaCourse progressively downsizeshis offerings as conditions worsenand walleye lips seal a little tighter.Fish that were hitting a No. 9 ShadRap might open up more willinglyfor a No. 5 Shad Rap as the watergets colder, faster and muddier.Tommy Skarlis of Dorchester,Iowa, has spent a considerableamount of time slipping the currenton walleye runs across thecontinent. pocket of clean water might affordme a small area with better visibility. If the stained water is cominginto the main channel from a tributaryor from immediate runoff, Ioften try and get above the source, upstream where the water is oftenclearer” Skarlis spends much of hisprefishing time narrowing downsmall pockets of water that offerthe best visibility when conditionsget bad.Water visibility can often be determinedby how soon your jig disappearsin the water. In some cases, bad visibility might make a 1/2-ounce jig vanish when lowered acouple of inches. Skarlis is actuallyplanning on marking the shaft andlower unit of his Minn Kota 101with a chartreuse ruler for monitoringwater clarity more precisely forthe 2006 season. While popular in bass circles, dippingplastics in fish attractant formulasisnʼt as common amongstthe walleye crowd. Dirtywater means fishing slow, and toslow down in the current, anglersare forced to go heavier. But heavierjigs with bulked-up bodies canmean short hits so a stinger hookcan be important.“One extreme or the other is howSkarlis described his preferredcolor options. Fluorescent, glowand chartreuse are popular choices, but many river anglers, Skarlis included, experiment with dark coloroptions, like purple or black.Under such conditions, anglersseldom have to worry about walleyesspooking from under the boat, and the presentation is kept verticaleven when targeting shallow fish. Some anglers choose to anchorand pound the jig in one spot, pickingoff fish as they move through.Other anglers slip slightly slowerthan the current. Whether you anchoror slip, pounding the bottomis extremely important. “You donʼtwant the jig to move horizontallyvery much, but you need to poundthe jig on the bottom vertically sothat fish can find you,” Skarlis explained.Another accomplished river angler,Nick Johnson of Elmwood,Wis., echoes many of Skarlisʼ opinionsregarding river walleyes duringhigh-water/reduced-visibilityconditions. Bald eagles mate forlife, and both birds (the female is alittle larger than the male) take partin incubating the eggs and feedingthe young. The eggs hatch after 35days and the young remain in thenest until they are 10 to 13 weeksold. Bald eagle feed largely on fish, but will eat other items, even carrion,if available. The bald eagle was adopted asour national symbol in 1782. Overthe years, eagle numbers declinedas a result of habitat loss, degradationof water quality, persecution, and, beginning in the 1940s, thewidespread use of the pesticideDDT.
