AGE GROUPSThe Special Olympics age groups used for competition are:Individual SportsGroupAgeYouth 8-11Junior 12-15Senior 16-21Masters 22-29Senior Masters 30 & overOpenAny AgeTeam SportsGroup AgeJunior 15 & underSenior 16-21Masters 22 & overOpen Any AgeAges are determined by the athlete's age on the opening dateof the Games or competition. It is important to recognize thatage groups can be combined or athletes can be moved to otherage categories to ensure equal competition for all participants.PROHIBITED SPORTS"Prohibited sports" means those sports which SOI has determined,in consultation with the Medical Advisory Committee, do notmeet SOI's minimum health or safety standards or which wouldotherwise expose Special Olympics athletes to unreasonablerisks to their health or safety. No Accredited Program may offerany training or competition activities in any sport which SOI hasclassified as a Prohibited Sport. SOI has presently classifiedboxing, fencing, shooting, karate, judo and other martial arts asProhibited Sports.
