For more informationemail dominionrepertorytheatre@gmail.com“THE BLOODIESTBATTLEFIELD IN CANADIANHISTORY“:The War of 1812 was the first of manyimportant steps in creating the independentCanada that we know today. Much of the Warwas fought in the Niagara/Fort Erie area and OldFort Erie was the site of the bloodiest battle onCanadian soil in our history. The garrison of Fort Erie fought at the Battle ofFrenchman’s Creek against American attacksin November 1812. In 1813, the fort was heldfor a period by U.S. forces after being partiallydismantled by the small garrison of British troopsand Canadian militia as they withdrew from thefort. British reoccupation followed the Americanwithdrawal from the area in December 1813 andattempts to rebuild the fort were begun. On July 3, 1814 another American force landednearby and captured Fort Erie again. The U.S.Army used the fort as a supply base and expandedits size. At the end of July, after the Battles ofChippawa and Lundy’s Lane, the American armywithdrew to Fort Erie. In the early hours of August15, 1814 the British launched a four prongedattack against the fortifications. A well-preparedAmerican defence and an explosion in the NorthEast Bastion destroyed the British chance forsuccess with the loss over 1,000 men. A full scalesiege set in and it was broken on September 17when American troops sortied out of the fort tocapture and wreck the British siege batteries.Shortly after the American sortie, the Britishlifted the siege lines and retired to positions tothe north at Chippawa. After unsuccessful attacksat Cook’s Mills, west of Chippawa, news reachedthe American forces that the eastern seaboardof the U.S. was under attack. On the 5th ofNovember 1814, with winter approaching, theAmericans destroyed the fort and withdrew toBuffalo, leaving Fort Erie the bloodiest battlefieldin the history of Canada. The Treaty of Ghentwas signed December 24, 1814, ending the Warof 1812-1814.
