In addition, several wire sizesare available, and the choice here will depend upon severalfactors, including base metal thickness and the arc transferprocess used. Consult your local dealer or appropriate AWSpublication for help in selecting an appropriate alloy type andwire size. MAGNUM 250 LX - OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS4. Select wire of size and type needed. Wire must be straight, withno kinks or bends. Check drive roller for the correct groovepositioning for the size wire selected. See "Drive RollGroove Selection", for details.PRESSURELEVERDRIVE ROLLBACK TUBE5. Put wire spool on shaft. After spool wire is in place, make sure theSpool Break Lever is riding on outer flange of wire spool and, theRoller Arm is underneath of spool riding on wire.CORRECTSPOOL BREAKLEVERFRONT TUBELIDPRESSUREIDLERROLL8. MAGNUM 250 LX - OPERATING INSTRUCTIONSDrive Roll Groove SelectionThe drive roll has two grooves, a wider and a narrower one, toaccommodate changes in the wire size used. Changing betweenthe grooves simply requires reversing the drive roll. The followinginformation is to be used to determine proper groove positioningand to change it, if necessary, for the wire size selectedA. MAGNUM 250 LX - OPERATING INSTRUCTIONSMaking A Weld1. Check that the spool gun power, control, and gas connections arecorrect for the power source being used. Check that the gas supplyis turned on. Check wire spool for an adequate supply of wire.2. See "Procedure Settings", below for wire feed speed and voltagesettings. Set these controls depending on the welding wire andbase metal thickness being used.3. Connect work clamp to metal being welded. Work clamp mustmake good electrical contact to the workpiece. The workpiecemust also be grounded as stated in "Arc Welding SafetyPrecautions".4. Connect power to welder and turn "ON".5. Prepare to purge gas line by first releasing wire drive. Push wiredrive release lever to the UP position, to avoid feeding wire.WARNING: Gun body and contact tip become electricallyenergized when gun trigger is pressed and remainso for several seconds after trigger is released.6. Press and hold gun trigger for about 5 seconds to purge gas line.If adjustable regulator or metering valve is installed, adjust gasflow per, "Setting Gas Flow Rate".7. Re-engage wire drive by pushing release lever to down positionto feed wire.8. Momentarily squeeze trigger and verify that wire feeds properly.Trim wire to approximately 1/4" (6 mm) from end of contact tip.WARNING: When using an open arc process, it is necessaryto use correct eye, ear, head, and body protection.9. Position gun over joint at 10° pushing angle. End of wire may belightly touching the work.10.Lower welding helmet, close gun trigger, and begin welding. Holdthe gun so that the contact tip to work distance is about 1/2 inch(13 mm).11.To stop welding, release the gun trigger and then pull the gunaway from the work after the arc goes out.12. When no more welding is to be done, close valve on gas cylinder, momentarily operate trigger to release gas pressure in line andturn off power source.13.Note that clogged tips can often be salvaged by peeling awaymelted wire.Procedure SettingsThe following procedure settings for 4043 aluminum wire and argongas can be used as starting points for developing specific weldingprocedures:Wire Metal Wire AmpsSize Thickness Speed DCin.
