<strong>BIBLIOGRAPHIES</strong><strong>THE</strong> <strong>WRITINGS</strong> <strong>OF</strong> <strong>NASIRU</strong> <strong>KABARA</strong> (<strong>MU</strong>˘AMMAD AL-N◊∑IR AL-KABARˆ)*ROMAN LOIMEIERIntroductionMu˛ammad al-Nappleßir b. Mu˛ammad al-Mukhtappler b. Mu˛ammadNappleßir al-Dın al-Kabarı (known generally as Nasiru Kabara),currently one of the best known Islamic scholars in northernNigeria, was born on 5 Shawwapplel 1344/18 April 1925 in the smallvillage of Guringawa near Kano. 1 His great-grandfather originallycame from Kabara, the harbour of Timbuktu on the river Niger. From there he emigrated to Hausaland at the end of the eighteenthcentury. After the jihappled of fiUthmapplen b. Füdı (1804-8) he came toKano where he was given a piece of land opposite the Emir’spalace. This plot became what is today known as ‘UnguwarKabara’—the Kabara Quarter—one of the famous centres oflearning in Kano.Nasiru Kabara’s education was supervised by his uncleIbrapplehım A˛mad al-Kanawı Natsughünı, who was one of theoutstanding scholars of the early twentieth century in Kano. He* This article is based on field work conducted in Nigeria between 1986 and1988 funded by the ‘German Research Foundation’. John Hunwick has added anumber of bibliographical details from manuscripts and locally publishededitions of Nasiru Kabara’s works held at the Melville J. Herskovits Libraryof Africana, Northwestern University.1 For the biography of Nasiru Kabara, and a literary analysis of his works, especially his poems, see Shehu Usman Kabara, ‘Shakhßiyyat al-shaykhMu˛ammad al-Nappleßir Kabara wa-appledapplebuhu’, M.A. thesis, University ofKhartoum, 1981; Halilu Safiid, ‘Shehu Mu˛ammad Nasiru Kabara’, paperpresented to the ‘Table-ronde sur les agents religieux en Afrique tropicale’,Paris, 1983.Sudanic Africa, ii, 1991, 165-174

166 ROMAN LOIMEIERserved as a religious counsellor to four different emirs of Kano(Aliyu Baba, Abbas, Usman and Abdullahi Bayero) and was oneof the most important members of the Qapplediriyya ∑üfı brotherhoodin this town. He initiated his pupil Nasiru Kabara into twodifferent branches of the brotherhood, the Kuntiyya and the Ahlal-bayt, which was established by Usuman dan Fodio. Aftercompleting his studies in the late 1940s, Nasiru Kabara concentratedon the unification of the Qapplediriyya in Kano under hisleadership. In 1937 he had received an ijappleza for the Qapplediriyya-Sammappleniyya from Shaykh Abü ’l-˘asan al-Sammapplenı and in 1949he established direct personal contact with the Sammappleniyya in theSudan. In this way he could act as the local leader (muqaddam) ofthe Qapplediriyya-Sammappleniyya in Kano and stress his claim tospiritual leadership of the Qapplediriyya. The break-through came in1953 when Nasiru Kabara travelled together with the Kanobusiness tycoon Sanusi Dantata to the centre of the Qapplediriyya inBaghdad. There he met the formal leader of the brotherhood, theGrand Khalıfa (al-khalıfa al-akbar al-fiarsh al-ghawth al-fia÷ım)Shaykh Ibrapplehım Sayf al-Dın al-Jılapplenı, who appointed NasiruKabara the leader of the Qapplediriyya in West Africa. 2 After his visitto Baghdad Nasiru Kabara was able to unite all branches of theQapplediriyya in Kano under his authority by 1956. Thereafter heworked to expand his movement outside Kano, first withinnorthern Nigeria, and in the 1960s and 1970s in southern Nigeriaand in other parts of West Africa. 3 In 1978 he was accepted as2 It is not known whether Shaykh Sayf al-Dın really gave Nasiru Kabara anijappleza for leadership of the Qapplediriyya in West Africa or whether Nasiru Kabaramerely claimed such authority after his visit to Baghdad. The important issuewas, however, that he had actually met the formal leader of the brotherhood. In this way he was able to shorten his spiritual link (silsila) to the centre ofthe brotherhood and could claim to have a direct and personal connectionwith the overall leadership of the brotherhood. Henceforth if anyone innorthern Nigeria sought a connection to the spiritual centre of thebrotherhood, he had to come first to Nasiru Kabara and submit to hisauthority.3 Today Nasiru Kabara claims to have local representatives (muqaddamün) notonly in West African countries, but also in Tanzania, Pakistan, Jordan, GreatBritain and the former Soviet Union.

<strong>THE</strong> <strong>WRITINGS</strong> <strong>OF</strong> N◊∑IRU <strong>KABARA</strong> 167leader of the Qapplediriyya for the whole of Nigeria by the amır almu√minınof all Nigerian Muslims, the Sultan of Sokoto Abü Bakr, and during the celebrations for the mawlid of fiAbd al-Qappledir in1987 Nasiru Kabara was finally proclaimed leader of theQapplediriyya for the whole of Africa by Shaykh Sayf al-Dın ofBaghdad. 4In his long career as a religious scholar Nasiru Kabara haswritten a number of theological and historical pamphlets andbooks as well as many poems. Many of his works concentrate onthe history of the Qapplediriyya and its development in Kano. Anothermajor topic of his writings is the defence and legitimation ofcertain rites of the Qapplediriyya like the celebration of the mawlid offiAbd al-Qappledir or the use of the bandiri drums in the dhikr of theQapplediriyya. Various estimates of the total number of his workshave been given. Ibrahim Tahir speaks of 77 ‘books’, 5 HaliluSafiid estimates there are about 150, 6 A.F. Ahmad gives thenumber as 200, 7 while Shehu Usman Kabara claims in theintroduction to Nasiru Kabara’s al-Naßı˛a al-ßarı˛a (Kano 1972),that he wrote 150 ‘books’ and over a thousand poems. My ownefforts have produced a list of 117 titles, published andunpublished. 8 His major theological work is without doubt hisTafsır, while his Hausa translation of the Qur√applen was in press in4 The Sultan of Sokoto presented Nasiru Kabara with the ‘sword of the army ofUsuman dan Fodio’. He should lead the Qapplediriyya in Nigeria against the‘fundamentalist’ movement of the ‘Yan Izala’ (Shehu Usman Kabara, personalcommunication, 3 March 1988).5 See Ibrahim Tahir, ‘Scholars, Sufis, Saints and Capitalists in Kano, 1904-1974’, Ph. D. thesis, Cambridge University, 1975, 153.6 Op. cit.7 See A.F. Ahmad, ‘The Qadiriyyah and its impact in Nigeria’, Ph. D. thesis,University of Ibadan, 1986, 212.8 During my stay in Kano Nasiru Kabara personally gave me a number of hisown works. In the Kurmi market of the old city of Kano as well as atbookstalls in front of Nasiru Kabara’s residence, I managed to buy otherbooklets written by him. Finally, I was able to obtain many titles from thethesis of Shehu Usman Kabara. Apart from these works he has written anumber of pamphlets which were, however, never published but simplydistributed among his followers in handwritten copies.

Since then, an official Libyan delegation of the Jamfiiyya visitedNigeria in late 1987 and in early 1988 Nasiru Kabara himself travelled toLibya where he met Mufiammar al-Qadhdhapplefı.
