Position Paper:The Republic of AngolaThe position of the Republic of Angola concerning the Israeli-PalestinianConflictDelegate: Will GressonThe Republic of Angola recognises that it has a strong and positive relationship withthe State of Israel. As a nation which has struggled against internal conflict in aneffort to achieve independence from its colonial past, Angola gratefully acknowledgesthe strong support of the Israeli government and people in successfully attaining andprotecting its autonomy since 1975. At the same time, the Republic of Angola alsowishes to restate its position regarding Palestine. Angola stands with the many nationswho have recognised Palestine as a sovereign state in its own right, and furthermorerecognise the need to resolve the violence in the region and achieve peaceful anddiplomatic relations between the nations. As with many nations within the United Nations General Assembly, the so-called‘two-state solution’ is seen by the Republic of Angola to be the best option inachieving peace within the region in the future. In order to see the solution put intoaffect, it is the position of Angola that the divisive politics of Palestine be broughtunder one umbrella so as to present a unified front, better able to speak to the needsand wants of the Palestinian State. The apparent conflict between different factions ofthe Palestinian National Authority is viewed by Angola to be detrimental to theprogress of the peace process and thus needs to be addressed in order to faster combatthe waves of violence seemingly endemic in the region. The work of the UnitedNations in drawing up boarders and establishing a geographic framework for thefuture of the region is seen as a positive step by the republic of Angola and thuscontinues to have its support. As well as these internal issues, the Republic of Angola believes that the UnitedNations must continue to play a central role in stabilising the region, particularly withregard to the use of violent terrorist action by groups within Palestine and to brutalmilitary measures utilised by Israel. Negotiation and diplomacy are the only means bywhich this conflict can be successfully handled and the United Nations must continueto have a central role in mediating discussion between the parties involved so as tocease the civilian casualties. The Republic of Angola here restates its ongoingcommitment to address the rise of global terrorism and push for peaceful solutions tobe found to international conflicts through open mediation. Furthermore, a strongconsideration for Human Rights abuses by both parties needs to be made. As party tomost major Human Rights Treaties, the Republic of Angola further restates its view ofHuman Rights as a major priority in all diplomatic dealings between both parties. Andfor this reason not only must the acts of terrorism and violence stop, but sufficient aidmust be made available through the United Nations to satisfy the needs of displacedpersons and victims of violence within the region on both sides.

Finally, any solution must show equal respect to the two States and their sovereignrights as stipulated by values upon which the United Nations was founded anddeveloped. This includes equal and fair recognition of both States by the members ofthe United Nations, with no ambiguity in the nature of said recognition. The Republicof Angola believes that only through these measures can peace be brought to thistroubled region and its peoples.
