Parish News - The Future - A QuestionnaireLast year the editor of the Parish News decided to retire and, rather than see itfold, a number of us volunteered to edit it, each for one month only, and after ayear assess how things were going. We have been going for 9 months now withabout 30 volunteers and are proud of the fact that quality has improved, theamount of both advertising and contributed materials have increased, as has thecirculation. Helen Thomson has been giving very generously of her time andexpertise, has computerised (almost) everything and has done most of thegeneral management and monthly magazine outline preparation – a job whichshe is very keen to hand over.Currently we are in the situation where the advertisers and the subscriptions coverthe costs of printing and our only other expenses are for sundries such as postage. But where to from here? Are you willing to help to keep it going? Or are youwilling to pay more than £1.50 for 12 issues? Should we pay someone to edit itrather than rely on Volunteers? We really need your input so that we can makesome decisions about keeping it going – or not!So please fill in the questionnaire below and put it through Rev Liz’s letterbox(The Rectory, Church Road, Bacton) or e-mail bcwnews@gmail.com with yourquestionnaire answers, comments and suggestions.1. Do you want the Parish News to keep going? Yes No 2. Would you be willing to pay more than £1.50 for 12 issues? Yes No If Yes: £5/year £10/year £15/year other £______3. Would you be prepared to volunteer as:a Guest Editor (there are 2 per month) overall Editor, Organiser & Manager Proof Reader Chasing Content Delivering Technical Support If so can we please have your name, e-mail address & telephone number?Name:________________________________Tel:__________________e-mail address _______________________________________4. Alan, withhis wife Val, plus friends and helpers managed to raisea whopping sum of £240,000. What an achievement!l doubt if the church would be barely standing without allthe hard work and dedication of Alan & Val and theirhappy helpers. One cannot help but feel a little sad forwe had so much fun. The annual Art Show (which Keithand Ann Bullock had originally organised), the cricketmatch, Andrew Stringer’s wonderful show of Oriental rugsand Kelims, wine and cheese, carol concerts, wine tasting, go-cart races, conkermatches (before health and safety). So many happy memories. Thank you Alanand Val plus friends for making our church a beautiful building to be proud of.Marianne Rumens- 25 -

Cotton VPA from Keith BullockWe do not meet in August - a whole month to prepare for the Show on September1st. If you do not already have a Schedule, that contains the rules and classes, these are available from Joyce at Lacons Cock Road 781529. Non members arerequired to pay the membership subscription (£2-00) to enter. Doors of theVillage Hall open for viewing at 2:30 pm. Admission 50pJust Container GardeningI'd never counted the number of containers in my garden until I started to writethis article. They total 76 of one type or another. One thing about containers inyour garden, you can control the planting medium, watering and feeding, alsothey can be mobile. If you don't like the position of some of your pots you canmove them easier than if the plants were in the ground.I use my containers as a barrier across the garden as this conveniently dividesthe garden into sections. A line of containers can draw your eye to a particularpart of the garden or lead you around a corner. The only restriction on the type of container and plants used is your imagination.I've seen an old leather boot planted up which looked very attractive standing in aborder. If you have an old broken down wheel barrow don't throw it away. Putsome drainage holes in the bottom, place some old crocks, concave-side down, this helps with the drainage and will allow water to find a way of escaping out fromthe bottom of the barrow. Plant it up with summer bedding and you will have agreat talking point.I have three different types and size of chimney pots planted up in my garden. One, with an ornamental red grass that shimmers in the wind, another with ablue/green Juniper over hanging the sides of the pot and the third I start with a potof Hyacinths, moving on to Daffodils and then changing throughout the season. There are wooden planters, metal containers, terracotta window boxes, threesizes of glazed pots, a galvanised watering can, china pots and a butler sinkwhich I use for my alpine garden. If you are able to acquire an old style Butler sink, and have the ability to work withit, make up a mix of sand and cement, about five parts sand to one part cement, not very much water in the early stages. You need a reasonably stiff mix and adda good quantity of peat to the mixture. It’s good fun trying to get the mix toadhere to the sides of the sink. Try and score the glaze on all sides of the sink ifyou can, this helps the cement/peat mix adhere. Try applyingthe mix over two days you will find the mix will adherebetter the second day with a coating already applied. Why peat you may ask. Once your sink is planted upinto a miniature Alpine garden, or whatever you decideto plant, after about a month green moss will start togrow, on the peat mix, over the surface and give amature appearance. Happy Gardening fromNorman Parcell.- 26 -

Bye-Bye Bacton! After a short and action packed 4 years at Bacton Middle School,we still don’t feel ready to leave. All the teachers are fabulous, withtheir own unique styles. Although we love our lessons, there isnothing better than having lesson time off, to go and do some funactivities; such as helping teachers with disco set-ups, or going tothe Primary Schools, to help out with sporting activities. As the endof term is arriving, there are tons and tons of exciting activities linedup for us; approaching soon is the Year 8 Pleasure Wood Hills trip. Also there is the long awaited Year 8 prom which every girl hasdreamed of since they were a foot tall. Arranging the prom, is agroup of us Year 8 pupils who are determined to make prom a nightto remember. Bacton makes every second count and none of uswants to leave. Next month we will be losing our amazing teacherand the best basketball coach we could ask for; Mr. Russell. He hasbrought us from amateur netball players, to County standardbasketball players. Also he has brought us lots of pride and successin everything we do. We have gained skills that we can use later onin life. Not only is Bacton losingMr. Russell, it is losing its highly fantabulous English teacherMiss Morris. Miss Morris is greatly thought of by all pupils. When wecame up in year 5, we were not the only ones new to the school;Miss Morris joined at the same time as us and she has grown notonly as a teacher, but as a friend too. The school’s famous ‘StrictlyCome Dancing’ was also a very memorable part of middle school. As the days are closing in, it is time for us to say goodbye to Bacton.Although we don’t want to go, unfortunately we have to. We willalways remember Bacton Community Middle School as a funatmosphere to be in. Bye-Bye Bacton!By Jasmine Stalford and Charley-ann Musselwhite.- 29 -
