Melanie Ball – Victoria
Frustration with Melbourne women wearing boring black, the desire to
brighten lives, and travels around Australia and the world inspired me
to decorate jackets - and continue to inspire the wearable artworks I
fashion under the Appliquez Moi label.
All my jackets are commissioned one-offs that let me indulge my
creativity while blocking out everything else in my head except fabric,
texture, shape and colour. You can see some of the results at
www.appliquezmoi.com .
My family has had two close calls with breast cancer and I am delighted
to support breast cancer research by donating a jacket for auction
Parkverbot 27/32 etching
The upper panel of German text in Parkverbot (Parking forbidden), was
taken directly from a street sign in Zürich, transferred photographically
onto a copper plate, and then etched. The cloudy middle panel
represents the confusion inherent in the translation process and the
red bridge at the bottom refers to bridging the gap between cultures
when words alone cannot.
From Kasterlee XXV 1/1 etching
From Kasterlee XXV was one of a series of monoprint etchings created
during a residency in Kasterlee, Belgium. It is based on excerpts from
antique letters and postcards that I collected throughout Europe and is
a reminder of the time that was invested to sustain and nurture
personal relationships through the ritual of putting pen to paper.
