Pribbenow, president ofRockford <strong>College</strong> in Rockford, Ill.,has been elected as <strong>the</strong> 11th president of<strong>Augsburg</strong> <strong>College</strong> by its board of regents.“We are confident that Dr. Pribbenowhas all <strong>the</strong> qualities of leadership andpassion needed to continue Dr.[William] Frame’s work at <strong>Augsburg</strong><strong>College</strong>,” said Jean Taylor ’85, chair of<strong>the</strong> Board of Regents. “He has alreadydemonstrated that he is an accomplishedcommunicator, a person who candemonstrate his own sense of Christianvocation, a skilled administrator, and avisible leader, actively participating in<strong>the</strong> life of <strong>the</strong> campus and surroundingcommunity.”Presidential search committee chairand regent Ted Grindal ’76 expressed histhanks and gratitude to <strong>the</strong> entire<strong>Augsburg</strong> community for <strong>the</strong>ir participationin <strong>the</strong> search process. “After a verythorough and successful search, we arepleased to welcome Dr. Pribbenow as<strong>Augsburg</strong>’s next president,” Grindal said.“In Paul Pribbenow, we feel we have founda successor who will not only carry on<strong>Augsburg</strong>’s commitment to being a collegecommitted to a Christian understandingof vocation, but will maximize itsexciting potential for <strong>the</strong> future.”“This is <strong>the</strong> work I believe I wascalled to do, and I look forward toserving as <strong>Augsburg</strong>’s next president,”Pribbenow said. “I firmly believe that myexperiences and commitments are aremarkable fit for <strong>the</strong> mission and needsof <strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong>.”Paul C. Pribbenow was born inDecorah, Iowa, in 1957. He received hisbachelor’s degree in sociology/politicalscience from Lu<strong>the</strong>r <strong>College</strong>, and hismaster’s degree in divinity and hisdoctorate in social ethics from <strong>the</strong>University of Chicago.He has served as president ofRockford <strong>College</strong> since 2002. Since hisarrival <strong>the</strong>re, Pribbenow has launchedseveral new educational initiatives,including working with faculty and staffto develop <strong>the</strong> Jane Addams Center forCivic Engagement. This program’sprimary responsibility, according toPribbenow, “is to find ways to work withstudents to integrate <strong>the</strong>ir education,co-curricular activities, spiritualexperiences, and service to <strong>the</strong>community as part of an intentionalvocational formation initiative.” He hasalso been an integral part of expandingPaul C. Pribbenowopportunities for <strong>the</strong> campus and itscommunity to join toge<strong>the</strong>r in a varietyof collaborative efforts.He and his wife, Abigail, an artsadministrator, have two young children.Pribbenow succeeds retiring presidentWilliam V. Fewer than 10% of <strong>the</strong> chapters nationwidereceive this honor; <strong>Augsburg</strong>’s chapter was also named in 1999-2000 and 2002-03. Professor Mark Engebretson is chapter adviser.Jim Haglund honoredRegent Jim Haglund was honored with <strong>the</strong> Hall of Fame award by<strong>the</strong> Association of Independent Corrugated Converters (AICC), a1,000-member international organization. SportsAuggies inspire hoop dreams inneighborhood kids by Don StonerFor current sports information, scores, and schedules go to .Helping young members of <strong>the</strong> Cedar-Riverside neighborhood learn about<strong>the</strong> game of basketball was a “slamdunk”proposition for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Augsburg</strong><strong>College</strong> men’s basketball team.In January, <strong>the</strong> Auggies invited 50boys and girls from <strong>the</strong> Cedar-RiversideCommunity School, which primarilyteaches immigrant children, to attend amorning basketball clinic at Si MelbyHall. Head coach Aaron Griess andmembers of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Augsburg</strong> squad showedchildren <strong>the</strong> basics of <strong>the</strong> game, <strong>the</strong>nbroke up into smaller groups to workindividually with <strong>the</strong>m. I have been <strong>the</strong> tripleader for three summer study trips in2000, 2003, and most recently lastsummer, July 1-22, 2005. I ga<strong>the</strong>red agroup of educators—classroom teachers,a preservice teacher, and teachereducators—to travel to Namibia to learnabout <strong>the</strong> country and her people,focusing on <strong>the</strong> education system. Incollaboration with <strong>the</strong> Center for GlobalEducation, my goals for <strong>the</strong> trip were tointroduce Namibia by visiting variouslocations; by hearing from Namibiansworking in a variety of sectors,especially teachers, principals, andfaculty from <strong>the</strong> University of Namibiaand teachers’ colleges; by accessing localmedia; and by being immersed in aculture so different from ours, and yet<strong>the</strong> same.I was pleased that our group bondedeasily as a community and blended like afine-tuned melody. We benefited from<strong>the</strong> two University of Namibia studentspreparing to be teachers who joined usand added depth to our understandingof schools and <strong>the</strong> influence of culture.A highlight for this trip was a onedayconference for teachers in <strong>the</strong>Windhoek area hosted by our group,with <strong>the</strong> help and facilitation of manyo<strong>the</strong>rs. We ga<strong>the</strong>red at <strong>the</strong> RossingConference Center in Khomasdal, asuburb of <strong>the</strong> capital city, Windhoek—50 people interested in schools, teachers,learners, and all areas related toeducation—for sessions titled “TheImportant Role of Teachers in Nation-Building.” The speakers, facilitators, andorganizers were both Namibians and <strong>the</strong>members of our group.The results far exceeded what couldbe stated here. We explored large issuesimpacting all teachers. On a visit to <strong>the</strong> Haganeni Primary School in Walvis Bay, Namibia, <strong>the</strong> educators enjoyed meeting<strong>the</strong> students, or “learners.”helped to respond to <strong>the</strong> need of allteachers to discuss important issues,realizing how vital it is for peopleinvolved in <strong>the</strong> process of educating ourchildren and youth to have opportunitiesfor dialogue and reflection. Because of<strong>the</strong> cultural differences unfamiliar to me,I appreciated working with <strong>the</strong>Namibians who helped to make <strong>the</strong>conference relevant and meaningful foreveryone.It will be months and years before wecan realize what this trip has meant to usas individuals. Ourworldviews have been forever changedby images of Namibian teachers, of <strong>the</strong>children and youth, and of <strong>the</strong> life wewitnessed in <strong>the</strong> coastal cities as differentfrom <strong>the</strong> villages in <strong>the</strong> north. We heard<strong>the</strong> voices of Namibians telling of <strong>the</strong>irpast, and we learned about <strong>the</strong> currentstruggles toward <strong>the</strong> constitutional goalsof <strong>the</strong>ir 16-year-old nation. We witnessed<strong>the</strong> joy of people toge<strong>the</strong>r, and enjoyedbeing in <strong>the</strong> company of a youth groupbuilding <strong>the</strong>ir lives. And we read about<strong>the</strong> hopes and dreams of people lookingtoward <strong>the</strong> future. Our global vision hasexpanded as a result of this experience.I am grateful to <strong>the</strong> Center for GlobalEducation staff—both here and inNamibia—whose expertise helped uscreate <strong>the</strong> best learning environment forour experience. Office space: or how I spent 18 yearsin <strong>the</strong> closet at <strong>Augsburg</strong>by Doug GreenPhoto illustration by Stephen GeffreWhy I didn’t move out ofmy little hole in <strong>the</strong> wallof an office when I had <strong>the</strong>chance, I’ll never know. It’sone of <strong>the</strong> smallest spaces in<strong>the</strong> maze that is MemorialHall, a former dormitory and<strong>the</strong> second oldest surviving building oncampus. The room can’t be more than6 x 6 and would be more suitable as awalk-in closet—or perhaps a very largecoffin.My office desk, an old metal one ofmodest size and a rosy beige hue, faces<strong>the</strong> wall beneath an enormous SaulSteinberg print of America as viewedfrom Manhattan. Before I got my laptop,Manhattan was unfortunately hiddenbehind my computer, just as Minnesotahas blotted out most of my New Yorkpast over <strong>the</strong> last 20 years.On <strong>the</strong> wall behind me as I sit at mydesk, <strong>the</strong> floor-to-ceiling shelves areoverflowing with books, papers,knickknacks (mostly mementoes frompast students and pictures of my wifeand son), and last year’s posters forcampus events. The filing cabinet next to<strong>the</strong> door obscures some of <strong>the</strong> shelvesand is buried under debris. Confidentialstudent records are now filed on top of<strong>the</strong> cabinet for easy access—even topassers-by in <strong>the</strong> hallway: It’s my versionof <strong>the</strong> Freedom of Information Act.Behind <strong>the</strong> door and next to <strong>the</strong> deskis ano<strong>the</strong>r freestanding bookcase, alsooverflowing and surmounted by stacks oftexts and paper—for creative writing, Ithink. The walls and <strong>the</strong> hallway side of<strong>the</strong> door are plastered with notices,reminders, pictures drawn by my son,and posters of events I had a hand in—like <strong>the</strong> first GLBT alumni reunion andart show: “Out and About.”The window, however, I love best.When I sit at my desk and look out, it’slike Rear Window; I can spy on a wholeset of neighboring offices. But if I pushback just a little and face <strong>the</strong> outside, Isee <strong>Augsburg</strong>’s little quad, an Edenicversion of my little closet.Maybe that’s why I can’t leave:because this little cubby across <strong>the</strong> floorfrom an old dormitory bathroom thatsports mold from <strong>the</strong> era of Warren G.Harding and <strong>College</strong> President GeorgeSverdrup is <strong>the</strong> quintessentialprofessorial space. Like <strong>the</strong> brain inDickinson’s poem, my office “is widerthan <strong>the</strong> sky.” My little cabinet contains aworld of thoughts—from <strong>the</strong> booksbehind and beside me to <strong>the</strong> computeron my desk to <strong>the</strong> many visitingcolleagues and students who come toshare <strong>the</strong>ir inner lives with me. I need<strong>the</strong>ir stifling and stimulating proximity.My office is certainly no “proud,ambitious heap” nor “built to enviousshow,” but a place in which, like <strong>the</strong>Sidneys at Penshurst in Jonson’s famouspoem, I can “dwell.”Doug Green is professor of English. Lead.That’s <strong>the</strong> motto of <strong>the</strong> CampusKitchens Project, based in Washington,D.C., that combines preparing anddelivering meals, partnering in <strong>the</strong>community, training for employmentopportunities, and providing servicelearning for students. Since opening oncampus in 2003, <strong>the</strong> Campus Kitchenat <strong>Augsburg</strong> has served more than25,000 meals to communityorganizations. The program, which isstudent organized and run, is based in<strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s food service facilities, andworks with surplus food from <strong>the</strong> foodservice and local food banks.Two shifts of student volunteerseach week prepare meals and deliver<strong>the</strong>m to six locations <strong>the</strong> next day. Trick or treat—dorm styleEach Halloween, ghosts, goblins, and o<strong>the</strong>r costumedcharacters wander <strong>the</strong> halls of Urness and Mortensen Halls,going from door to door trick-or-treating.They’re neighborhood children invited to campus byLINK, <strong>the</strong> student service organization, for fun, games,treats, and, sometimes, a haunted house. LINK provides<strong>the</strong> candy, and students provide <strong>the</strong> fun for <strong>the</strong> kids.Targeting a career (map #2)Tim Benson ’00, graduatedwith a business administration/marketingmajorand a minor in managementinformation systems.Benson picked up his firstdowntown corporateexperience at a summerinternship with Accenture(<strong>the</strong>n Andersen Consulting).He found it to be greatpreparation for <strong>the</strong> businessworld that he couldn’t havelearned in a classroom—“protocols, unwritten rules,and business speak”—tha<strong>the</strong>lped him get a foot in <strong>the</strong> door at Target Corporation.He started as a business analyst and was eventuallypromoted to a supply chain expert. Now he is manager ofan eight-person team in <strong>the</strong> kitchenware department,which is responsible for about 1,000 items and hundreds ofmillions of dollars in sales annually in all 1400+Target stores.A day at <strong>the</strong> Soap Factory (map #10)As part of AugSem,<strong>the</strong>ir first-year seminar,students in ART 102Design spent anafternoon at <strong>the</strong> SoapFactory. This turn-of<strong>the</strong>-centurywood andbrick warehouse, whichformerly housed <strong>the</strong>National Purity SoapFactory, has been turned into an art gallery featuring workby emerging artists, and offering available studio space.The afternoon was part of City Service Projects Day,which started with a 20-minute walk to <strong>the</strong> gallerythrough <strong>the</strong> historic flour mill district. At <strong>the</strong> gallery, <strong>the</strong>students helped take down one show and prepare toinstall ano<strong>the</strong>r. They cleaned floors, scrubbed andsqueegeed walls, and moved furniture.The students got first-hand experience in what agallery is—or not, i.e. it’s not just clean floors and brightlighting. Since a number of <strong>the</strong>se students intend to majorin art-related fields, this gave <strong>the</strong>m an opportunity for aservice project in something that really interested <strong>the</strong>m.Plus, <strong>the</strong> gallery director told <strong>the</strong>m that what <strong>the</strong>ywere able to do for <strong>the</strong> gallery in three hours would havetaken <strong>the</strong> staff all week to complete.Staying connected with kids (map #9)Kristy Bleichner graduated from <strong>Augsburg</strong> in 2002 with amajor in social work. While a student, she began tovolunteer for Wednesday Night Out, a program sponsoredby Trinity Lu<strong>the</strong>ran Church. For this, Trinity partners withcommunity organizations, including <strong>Augsburg</strong>, to providesuppers for neighborhood families, giving <strong>the</strong>m a place toga<strong>the</strong>r and talk. After supper, Bleichner and o<strong>the</strong>r studentvolunteers take <strong>the</strong> children to a nearby gym for games,making it more convenient for <strong>the</strong>ir parents to talk wi<strong>the</strong>ach o<strong>the</strong>r about family and community issues.Even after graduating nearly four years ago, Bleichnerhas wanted to stay connected with <strong>the</strong>se families andcontinues to devote time to <strong>the</strong> Wednesday Night Outprogram.12<strong>Spring</strong> <strong>2006</strong>
A school of many cultures (map #5)Around-<strong>the</strong>-world foodFive blocks from <strong>Augsburg</strong> lies <strong>the</strong> only school in <strong>the</strong> countrylocated in a high-rise apartment building. The Cedar-RiversideCommunity School, a K-8 charter school sponsored byMinneapolis Public Schools, is in <strong>the</strong> midst of Minneapolis’most diverse neighborhood, largely Somali and East African.The school serves mostly immigrant children, from nearlya dozen different countries, some of whom never had anyformal education before arriving in <strong>the</strong> U.S. Each week nearly30-40 <strong>Augsburg</strong> students tutor and mentor at <strong>the</strong> school, andprovide instruction or support during <strong>the</strong> year in music, art,piano lessons, physical education, science, and health.<strong>Augsburg</strong> elementary education students in ProfessorJeanine Gregoire’s science methods class teach hand-onscience units at <strong>the</strong> school. Plannedactivities involve students inlitter clean-up, trailmonitoring, placing stenciledwarnings on storm drains toprevent pollution into <strong>the</strong>river, monitoring invasivespecies, and trail monitoring.In <strong>the</strong> summer, politicalscience professor JoeUnderhill-Cady teachesEnvironmental and RiverPolitics, a course that looks at<strong>the</strong> challenges of balancingeconomic development, social justice, and environmentalstewardship. What <strong>Augsburg</strong>alumni Paul Mueller ’84, M.D., and RickSeime ’70, Ph.D., encountered in <strong>the</strong>hurricane-devastated areas of sou<strong>the</strong>rnLouisiana was far worse than newsreports could show. But, Mueller describesreturning to Minnesota rejuvenated andthankful for <strong>the</strong> opportunity to help.Seime says he would do it again ina heartbeat.Mueller, an internist with a publichealth background, and Seime, apsychologist, both at Mayo Clinic inRochester, Minn., served on differentmedical relief teams. They were a part ofOperation Minnesota Lifeline, acollaboration of healthcare volunteersfrom Mayo Clinic, University ofMinnesota, <strong>College</strong> of St. Ca<strong>the</strong>rine, and<strong>the</strong> American Refugee Committee.Sponsored by <strong>the</strong> Louisiana Departmentof Health, <strong>the</strong>ir work helped tobridge <strong>the</strong> crisis period by treatingimmediate medical needs and connectingpeople to resources until more permanentpublic health clinics were set up.For two weeks each, Mueller’s andSeime’s teams operated from a base inLafayette, La., and were housed at aBaptist church. Each day <strong>the</strong>y set out invans supplied with medicines, supplies,and vaccines, to treat people in <strong>the</strong> field,most of whom were ei<strong>the</strong>r HurricaneKatrina evacuees from New Orleans orresidents of <strong>the</strong> areas ravaged byHurricane Rita.The medical teams weremultidisciplinary, including physicians,nurses, social workers, and o<strong>the</strong>rs. But,everyone served as a mental healthcounselor because <strong>the</strong> need was so great.Many people had lost everything <strong>the</strong>yowned, had lost contact with familymembers, and had lost <strong>the</strong>ir medicationsand medical providers. Many simply justneeded to talk.Despite <strong>the</strong>ir adversities, Seime was“impressed with <strong>the</strong>ir resiliency, in <strong>the</strong>faith <strong>the</strong>y had, and in <strong>the</strong> way <strong>the</strong>y cametoge<strong>the</strong>r to help each o<strong>the</strong>r out.” BothMueller and Seime remark about <strong>the</strong>gratitude expressed by hurricane victimsfor <strong>the</strong> care <strong>the</strong>y received from <strong>the</strong>medical teams.In Johnson’s Bayou, La., a coastaltown almost totally destroyed byHurricane Rita, Mueller met Rhonda, “asalt-of-<strong>the</strong>-earth person” and one of avery few who had returned to her home.Above: Mayo Clinic internist Dr. Paul Mueller’84 (left) and Sr. Romana Klaubaus (right), anurse from <strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong> of St. Ca<strong>the</strong>rine,posed with residents of Johnson’s Bayou(La.). When <strong>the</strong>levees broke, she told of trying to ge<strong>the</strong>lp to rescue <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r tenants in herbuilding, and of wading in <strong>the</strong> water toget to boats. Not all survived, and shetold of an elderly man who had to turnback. They saw him drown withoutbeing able to offer assistance.Miss Cindy was so grateful for <strong>the</strong>Donald Mattison ’66, M.D., a senior adviser at <strong>the</strong> National Institutes of Health and a U.S.Public Health Service (USPHS) medical officer, led a team to Louisiana on Aug. 31, justafter Hurricane Katrina struck, for a two-week deployment.Emergency medicine in a field hospitalby Donald Mattison ’66, M.D.medical team’s help that she baked aCajun meal to thank <strong>the</strong>m and drove it35 miles to <strong>the</strong> church where Seime andhis colleagues were staying.Drawing on his background in bothinternal medicine and public health,Mueller felt “called” to respond to <strong>the</strong>medical needs in Louisiana. Seimeconsidered it a privilege to serve and wasglad for <strong>the</strong> opportunity, even taking intoaccount <strong>the</strong> 21 hours each way on <strong>the</strong> bus.Paul Mueller ’84, M.D., is a member of <strong>the</strong><strong>Augsburg</strong> Board of Regents and serves on <strong>the</strong>Science Center Task Force. TheyI was part of <strong>the</strong> second team of PublicHealth Service (PHS) officers deployedinto Baton Rouge, La. Our initialassignment was staffing and coordinationof a temporary hospital established intwo buildings on <strong>the</strong> Louisiana StateUniversity campus—an acute care“emergency room” with intensive careunit (ICU) containing about 150 beds,and a lower acuity hospital containing200-500 beds (depending on need).While both were operating ashospitals over about a 15-day period,approximately 15,000 individuals were“triaged” and about 3,000 admitted,cared for, and discharged. When <strong>the</strong>demand for acute care diminished, <strong>the</strong>smaller facility was closed and <strong>the</strong> loweracuity facility converted to a specialneeds shelter. At that point additionalPHS officers were available to participatein needs assessment and establishment ofsurveillance systems with <strong>the</strong> state healthdepartment.Teams were also assigned to managemedical and mental health needs of firstresponders from New Orleans. MissionsDonald Mattison ’66, M.D., was honored oncampus last fall as a Distinguished Alumnus.during <strong>the</strong> “public health” period of <strong>the</strong>deployment included assessment andsurveillance of hospitals, clinics, schools,public wells, food processing facilities,and shelters.The PHS officers I worked withduring <strong>the</strong> deployment were dedicated,highly professional, and went far beyondwhat would be expected to meet <strong>the</strong>needs of Louisiana. Hurricane Katrina,a personal perspectiveby Shira HussainI was recruiting in Wisconsin whenHurricane Katrina was set to hit <strong>the</strong> GulfCoast. My dad was determined not toleave and actually held my family backfrom evacuating as soon as <strong>the</strong>y wantedto. I even called home and was cryingbecause I just didn’t have a good gutI just didn’t have a good gut feelingabout this hurricane.feeling about this hurricane. Frequentlypeople in New Orleans do not evacuatefor hurricanes because <strong>the</strong>y are socommon, and people fear <strong>the</strong>ir houseswill be looted if <strong>the</strong>y leave.My parents, sister, and bro<strong>the</strong>revacuated to Lake Charles, La., <strong>the</strong> daybefore <strong>the</strong> storm hit. I watched <strong>the</strong> newsand was happy to see that <strong>the</strong> stormcame and went.Then disaster struck on a whole newlevel. The minute <strong>the</strong> levees weredeclared breached, I knew things weregoing to get a lot worse. I saw <strong>the</strong> cityunder water and couldn’t stop crying. Ididn’t hear from my family and friendsand cried even more. I was finally ableto reach my mom two days after <strong>the</strong>ordeal and cried for more positivereasons. Eventually, I got in touch with<strong>the</strong> rest of my family and also myhometown friends.Although I couldn’t explain why all ofthis happened, I did have <strong>the</strong> choice tofind something positive out of all of it.Although I couldn’t explain why allof this happened, I did have <strong>the</strong> choiceto find something positive out of all ofit. The fact that my family and friendswere alive is what kept me going. A fewweeks later, my parents returned to <strong>the</strong>Shira Hussain was on <strong>the</strong> road attending college fairs when she heard <strong>the</strong> news that her NewOrleans neighborhood was under water.house, which was completely destroyed.Fortunately, my mom was able to get ourfamily Bible and photos. They plan torebuild in <strong>the</strong> same area.I, too, took a hard hit with all of this.I lost <strong>the</strong> house I grew up in and <strong>the</strong>schools I went to. Most of my hang-outspots were gone, and <strong>the</strong> worst part wasbeing so far away from my family duringall of this.So I did what I could. I got advanceson my checks and sent money home.I headed up fundraising efforts at<strong>Augsburg</strong> for hurricane evacuees. I evenpassed out my number as a resource toMinnesota locals who were hosting,donating to, and/or aiding evacuees.Helping my fellow “N’awlins”neighbors in any way I could was in turnhelping me deal with everything.From all of this, I’ve truly acceptedthat nothing material lasts forever. I’vealso learned that we are not as in controlof things as we think we are. (Myparents, like so many o<strong>the</strong>rs, are stillwaiting for <strong>the</strong>ir insurance checks and<strong>the</strong>ir trailer from FEMA). This wholeexperience gives us all so many reasonsto be thankful. And it emphasizes thatminor problems, petty grudges, and badHelping my fellow “N’awlins” neighbors in any way I couldwas in turn helping me deal with everything.intentions are really things we shouldn’thold on to, because major things beyondour control will happen—both good andbad, easy and challenging.A family friend of ours did drown inher house while waiting for her nephew,who never came to get her. My momtook it particularly hard because she hadwanted Miss Gerdy to evacuate with<strong>the</strong>m. Teachers who lead,leaders who teachEDITED BY BETSEY NORGARDVicki Olson describes how teachers asleaders must be willing to take risks andto become positive influences in schools.OVER THE PAST SEVERAL MONTHSI’ve been reading about a topic dear tomy heart—teacher leadership. At<strong>Augsburg</strong>, this concept undergirds ourteacher licensure programs at both <strong>the</strong>undergraduate and graduate levels.What teacher leadership means to<strong>Augsburg</strong>’s Education Department is that<strong>the</strong> teachers we prepare have both <strong>the</strong>right and <strong>the</strong> responsibility to exerciseleadership within <strong>the</strong>ir classrooms,schools, districts, and communities.Recognizing that teachers lead within<strong>the</strong> classroom is not difficult; it isaccepted enough to seem like commonsense. But once you get beyond <strong>the</strong>classroom walls, <strong>the</strong> concept of teacherleadership is less well established.Some would say “teacher leadership”is an oxymoron. Principals lead, notteachers. They would go on to say thatteachers carry out <strong>the</strong> will of <strong>the</strong> schooldistrict by teaching <strong>the</strong> designatedcurriculum, following <strong>the</strong> standardsdetermined by <strong>the</strong> state, and upholding<strong>the</strong> expectations of <strong>the</strong> community.Teachers, in o<strong>the</strong>r words, follow <strong>the</strong>direction of o<strong>the</strong>rs who make <strong>the</strong>decisions, creating classrooms, in turn,where students learn what <strong>the</strong>y arerequired to learn.This philosophy exists, but it isn’t <strong>the</strong>one we believe in or work from.Certainly our vision incorporates <strong>the</strong>idea that teachers have a responsibility to<strong>the</strong> school district, <strong>the</strong> state, and <strong>the</strong>community to educate students in <strong>the</strong>best ways possible. That’s a given.But ra<strong>the</strong>r than simply doing what<strong>the</strong>y are told, we believe teachers must—truly must—see <strong>the</strong>mselves as activeparticipants in deciding what should betaught and how to teach it.In our vision, teachers come to <strong>the</strong>table with administrators, parents, o<strong>the</strong>rcommunity members, and sometimesstudents to define what it means to be aneducated person and <strong>the</strong>n to map outhow that education will happen within agiven setting.Teachers count <strong>the</strong>mselves among <strong>the</strong>grown-ups and accept <strong>the</strong> responsibilityand risks from making <strong>the</strong> decisions<strong>the</strong>y make.This conceptualization of “teacher”that includes an element of leadershipfrightens some. Responsibility and riskbring with <strong>the</strong>m accountability, but alongwith that <strong>the</strong>y also can bring a fine senseof exhilaration, energy, and eminentsatisfaction in a job well done.Roland Barth, in Learning by Heart,says, “I think of a teacher leader as onewho has a positive influence on <strong>the</strong>school as well as in <strong>the</strong> classroom … allteachers have <strong>the</strong> capacity to lead <strong>the</strong>enterprise down a more positive path, tobring <strong>the</strong>ir abundant experience andwisdom to schools.”Like Barth, at <strong>Augsburg</strong> we believe allteachers can be teacher leaders and sharein leading <strong>the</strong> collective “enterprise” ofmaking schools positive places withlearning at <strong>the</strong> heart. When hethought about <strong>the</strong> statistics—<strong>the</strong>staggering numbers of soldiers who werekilled or wounded during <strong>the</strong> invasion—he realized that he was, in fact, asurvivor. And with that realization alsocame <strong>the</strong> insight that he had beenblessed with many gifts in his life thatshould be shared with o<strong>the</strong>rs.“I believe it is important to leave thisworld in better condition than it was whenwe arrived,” Paulson said, “so contributingto <strong>Augsburg</strong> and o<strong>the</strong>r worthwhileorganizations is part of this process.”The Science Center atrium girft isprovided in memory of Lois V. Naming <strong>the</strong> ‘Doc’ Johnson A-Club Office by Betsey NorgardDonnis “Doc” Johnson ’52, an Auggie whodied at <strong>the</strong> age of 23, well before his time,will not be forgotten by his friends. Five ofhis classmates and friends have joinedtoge<strong>the</strong>r to name <strong>the</strong> A-Club office in <strong>the</strong>new Si Melby South Wing in his memory.Raised in <strong>the</strong> small town of NewmanGrove, Nebraska—<strong>the</strong> only Lu<strong>the</strong>ran FreeChurch congregation in that state—Johnson followed his sister, LaRhea, andseveral relatives to <strong>Augsburg</strong> <strong>College</strong>, 400miles away. He enrolled in 1948, majoredin physical education, and became centeron <strong>the</strong> football team.After graduation in 1952 and two yearsin <strong>the</strong> U.S. Army at Fort Leonard Wood,Mo., Johnson returned home to a teachingand football coaching position at <strong>the</strong> Elgin(Neb.) High School. This was to be hisonly year of teaching, as he died of bulbarpolio in November 1954. Members of hishigh school football team served aspallbearers.Early last year, Doc’s cousin, MarkJohnson ’54, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>Augsburg</strong>development officer Ron Main ’56,proposed a plan to name <strong>the</strong> new A-ClubOffice in Doc’s memory. Their gifts, withadditional gifts from Louie Morseth ’51,Roger Stockmo ’54, Leroy Nyhus ’52, andVirg Gehring ’57 have made it possible.In his senior year at <strong>Augsburg</strong>, Doc“Doc” Johnson (top row, no. 28) played on <strong>the</strong> 1951 football team, along with teammate, andnow development officer and donor, Ron Main ’56 (middle row, no. 38).ConnectionsJohnson was elected president of A-Club. Sig Hjelmeland led fundraising efforts for 30 years by Betsey NorgardSigvald Hjelmeland ’41 was <strong>the</strong> second offour generations of <strong>Augsburg</strong> graduatesand spent three decades at <strong>Augsburg</strong>leading fundraising efforts that madepossible a number of major capitalprojects. He died on Dec. 25 at age 90.Hjelmeland returned to <strong>Augsburg</strong> in1952 to serve as <strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s firstdirector of development. Majorcampaigns he headed led to <strong>the</strong>completion of <strong>the</strong> George SverdrupLibrary, Christensen Center, Urness Hall,and Foss Center.He is best remembered by colleagueJeroy Carlson ’48 as “meticulous.” In <strong>the</strong>late 1950s, as donor and giving programswere being created, Hjelmeland drew onhis expertise and passion for detail tocreate a manual accounting system andbookkeeping procedures for donor gifts.This included <strong>the</strong> use of a bank book tohelp donors track <strong>the</strong>ir monthly pledgepayments.In 1963, as <strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong> movedthrough <strong>the</strong> transition from <strong>the</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>ranFree Church (LFC) into <strong>the</strong> AmericanLu<strong>the</strong>ran Church, Hjelmeland, with hisNorwegian LFC background, served avaluable role in helping many of<strong>Augsburg</strong>’s longtime LFC families staypart of and feel connected to <strong>Augsburg</strong>.“He spoke Norwegian and had a greatsense of humor,” Carlson says, “not justAmerican humor, but Scandinavianhumor as well.” Hjelmeland’srelationships helped to foster a culture ofphilanthropy that has nurtured many of<strong>Augsburg</strong>’s current donors.In 1986, Hjelmeland, with his wife,Three generations of Hjelmeland Auggies: Sigvald Hjelmeland ’41, who is survived by his wife,Helen; (back row, L to R) James Clarke and daughter Laurene (Hjelmeland) Clarke ’64; son John’70 and Lynn (Benson) ’69 Hjelmeland; and granddaughter Jennifer (Hjelmeland) Stewart ’00.Helen, and son and daughter-in law John’70 and Lynn (Benson) ’69, established ascholarship in <strong>the</strong> name of his fa<strong>the</strong>r,John Hjelmeland, who graduated from<strong>Augsburg</strong> Academy, <strong>College</strong>, andSeminary.In 2003, Sig Hjelmeland received <strong>the</strong>Spirit of <strong>Augsburg</strong> award for hisdedication and long service to <strong>the</strong><strong>College</strong>.Hjelmeland is survived by his wife,Helen; two children, Laurene and John;seven grandchildren; and five greatgrandchildren.The family has directedmemorial gifts to <strong>the</strong> Rev. JohnHjelmeland Scholarship Fund.Faculty-staff giving boosts campaignFrom September through December, guided by a faculty-staffcampaign committee, employees of <strong>Augsburg</strong> raised <strong>the</strong> bar ongiving and encouraged awareness of a philanthropic culture.A generous matching fund, matches from Thrivent Financial forLu<strong>the</strong>rans for its members, and contacts from committee membershelped to significantly increase both <strong>the</strong> dollar amount and <strong>the</strong>rate of giving within <strong>the</strong> <strong>Augsburg</strong> community.Through December 31, an additional total of $133,000 wasgiven or pledged by employees of <strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong>, beyond <strong>the</strong>$635,000 since <strong>the</strong> campaign’s launch.Even more important, however, was <strong>the</strong> increased rate ofparticipation in <strong>the</strong> campaign—to more than doubling <strong>the</strong> overallrate of 17% in 2004-05. Working with her pastor, she created <strong>the</strong> HealthSundays program to provide monthly health information to her congregation.Partnering with nurses and o<strong>the</strong>rs from <strong>the</strong> congregation, and using additionalresources from <strong>the</strong> American Cancer Society and <strong>the</strong> Stairstep Foundation’s HealthInitiative, she implemented monthly blood pressure checks, distributed healthinformation on sexually transmitted diseases, instituted a “Stomp Out Stroke”awareness program, and started <strong>the</strong> Promised Land Fellowship walking programwhich focuses on weight loss, nutrition, and exercise. “My mo<strong>the</strong>r was myinspiration,” Hokes says. “She had <strong>the</strong> gift of healing.”Hokes is a lifelong advocate for continuing education. She returned to schoolafter her two children were grown, and has since received an Associate of Artsdegree from Minneapolis Community <strong>College</strong>, a Bachelor of Arts degree from<strong>Augsburg</strong>’s Weekend <strong>College</strong>, a Master of Arts degree from <strong>the</strong> University of St.Thomas, and a parent educator license from <strong>the</strong> University of Minnesota. Class NotesALUMNI PROFILEMike and Gail Koski: Traveling <strong>the</strong>missionary roadby Sara Holman ’06Courtesy photoWorking in <strong>the</strong> mailroom, falling in love with a fellow coworker, graduatingin four years, and preparing for a bright future were just a few of <strong>the</strong> thingsthat Mike and Gail (Niederloh) Koski accomplished while attending<strong>Augsburg</strong>. However, finding <strong>the</strong>ir joint calling to become missionarieshappened just months after <strong>the</strong>ir marriage. Married in October 1972, <strong>the</strong>following July carried <strong>the</strong> Koskis across <strong>the</strong> ocean to Africa.Mike, a 1971 graduate, came to <strong>Augsburg</strong> and studied history and secondaryeducation. Gail graduated one year later with a B.A. in French secondaryeducation. Both came from congregations that were involved in missionarywork, yet each confesses that overseas missionary work had not been a partof <strong>the</strong>ir plan. When <strong>the</strong> inspiration came, Mike recalls, “It was an answer toprayer.”“We just understood that this was <strong>the</strong> way God would want us to use ourgifts and abilities,” Gail said.After 32 years of missionary work in Kenya and Zaire (now <strong>the</strong> DemocraticRepublic of Congo), <strong>the</strong> Koskis are currently awaiting <strong>the</strong>ir next assignment. The couple works with <strong>the</strong> Minneapolis-based missionorganization World Mission Prayer League (WMPL). When choosing a mission group, “WMPL resonated well. Its principles, policies, andpractices fit <strong>the</strong> best,” Mike said.Every four years, <strong>the</strong> couple comes back to <strong>the</strong> United States on furlough. During this one-year break, <strong>the</strong> missionaries continue <strong>the</strong>ir workand await news about <strong>the</strong>ir future destination. The Koskis were called back in September 2005.The couple’s mission experience started in Zaire where <strong>the</strong>y worked in a rural setting, often connecting with nomadic tribes. It was <strong>the</strong>couple’s responsibility to learn <strong>the</strong> language and culture and <strong>the</strong>n present <strong>the</strong> gospel in a way that would be understood. Their time in Zairewas limited to only four months, and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>ir assignment changed.Kenya has been a very permanent place for <strong>the</strong> Koskis’ mission work. They spent many years in <strong>the</strong> agricultural parts of nor<strong>the</strong>rn andwestern Kenya but have been stationed in <strong>the</strong> city of Nairobi for <strong>the</strong> past 10 years. Mike became assistant director of <strong>the</strong> Urban MinistriesSupport Group (UMSG) in 1995 and <strong>the</strong>n moved up to <strong>the</strong> director position in 1999. Gail’s work has consisted of many facets: UMSGresource center librarian, ESL teacher, Sunday school supervisor, and mission hostess. She was also in charge of home-schooling <strong>the</strong>ir threechildren. Now fully grown, <strong>the</strong>ir children have all graduated college and live and work at various places within North America.The Koskis’ main goal in Nairobi was to help develop leadership within <strong>the</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>ran church. With strong leadership skills instilled, <strong>the</strong>church was able to discuss and respond to societal ailments such as poverty and HIV. To reach more people within <strong>the</strong> city, one churchdecided to split <strong>the</strong> congregation into five groups and build five new churches. Everything was planned and prepared ahead of time: pastorswere found, worship teams were formed, and everything transitioned very smoothly. The five new congregations each held a specialcharacteristic that made it fit perfectly into its new part of <strong>the</strong> city. For example, in <strong>the</strong> area where many university students lived, <strong>the</strong>church emphasized youth activities and provided a contemporary worship service.The couple’s greatest excitement is to see <strong>the</strong>ir fellow church members’ faith development. “We’ve been doing this for so long that we get tosee young people grow into adults. We are able to see how <strong>the</strong>ir faith keeps growing and <strong>the</strong>n how it impacts <strong>the</strong>ir families, vocations, andcommunities.”Kenya holds a special place in both <strong>the</strong> Koskis’ hearts. They enjoyed <strong>the</strong> vibrant colors and temperate climate, but it was <strong>the</strong> people-orientedculture and relaxed pace of living that really appealed to <strong>the</strong> couple. AUGGIE THOUGHTSAuggie ThoughtsEditor’s note: Bruce Palmquist ’84 was honored as <strong>the</strong> 2005 Washington StateProfessor of <strong>the</strong> Year by <strong>the</strong> Carnegie Foundation for Advancement in Teachingand <strong>the</strong> Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).Eschewing <strong>the</strong> normal media interviews that accompany such honors,Palmquist decided to introduce himself to readers through <strong>the</strong> eyes of his bestcanine friend, Jack.Bruce DOES know Jack, orJack, Bruce’s Jack Russell Terrier,interviews Bruce about teachingJack: What is your favorite aspect ofteaching?Bruce: I like answering students’questions and helping <strong>the</strong>m make sense ofconcepts <strong>the</strong>y are having problems with.Some professors go into <strong>the</strong> classroomwith an elaborate presentation all plannedout. But, that’s not me. I know where <strong>the</strong>class should end up by <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong>week. And, I have planned, in general,how we will get <strong>the</strong>re. But, <strong>the</strong> studentshelp create <strong>the</strong> path with <strong>the</strong>ir specificneeds and questions.J: You often teach late night astronomylabs or organize public observingsessions that go late. How can youstay up so late and still get up at5 a.m. to take me outside?B: Well, it isn’t easy. The CentralWashington University Astronomy Clubhelps out a lot. In fact, <strong>the</strong>y plan most of<strong>the</strong> late observing sessions youmentioned. But, I think it is importantthat introductory astronomy students getfamiliar with <strong>the</strong> nighttime sky. The bestway to learn about <strong>the</strong> night sky is toobserve it with some expert help. By <strong>the</strong>way, taking you out at 5 a.m. is betterthan cleaning up after you in <strong>the</strong> house.J: Speaking of expert help, you write aweekly astronomy column …B: I hope <strong>Augsburg</strong> Now doesn’t misspellthat as “weakly column.”J: It would be a Freudianslip if <strong>the</strong>y do. Anyway,why do you volunteeryour time to write anewspaper column in <strong>the</strong>Ellensburg Daily Record?B: Science is such animportant topic. And, it iswoefully under covered in<strong>the</strong> popular press.Astronomy is a veryattainable topic. The starsand planets are always up<strong>the</strong>re for people to see.And, I have selfish reasonsfor writing <strong>the</strong> column, aswell. If my column helps<strong>the</strong> general public have amore positive outlook toward science,<strong>the</strong>y are more likely to support scienceteaching in <strong>the</strong> schools and universities.J: Talk a little bit more about sciencein <strong>the</strong> schools, especially <strong>the</strong> state’sstandardized test called <strong>the</strong>Washington Assessment of StudentLearning, or WASL.B: Even dogs know that <strong>the</strong> WASL is asensitive subject. In general, children areover-tested. I think no child gets leftbehind, because <strong>the</strong>y leave such a longpaper trail of standardized test sheets.But, <strong>the</strong> science WASL is much betterthan <strong>the</strong> typical multiple choicestandardized test. The science WASLBruce Palmquist ’84 and his “interviewer,” Jackrequires students to write about scienceand to design scientific experiments.Simply memorizing facts will not resultin a good WASL score. And, <strong>the</strong> WASL’semphasis on designing experimentsmeans that teachers will need to includemore experiments and <strong>the</strong> analysis ofexperiments in <strong>the</strong>ir classroom. This is agood thing.J: What is your favorite constellation?B: Canis Major, <strong>the</strong> great dog.
