LAKE ATHLETIC NEWSLake Recognizes Three-Sport Athletes for 2009-2010The Lake High School athletic department recentlyannounced the winners of the LHS “Tri-Athlete Award”for the 2009-2010 school year. This is the sixth year ofthe award which is presented to student-athletes whohave participated in multiple sports during the schoolyear.Lake athletics director, Bruce Brown, stated, “Our Lakeathletic department mission and our entire coachingstaff believe strongly in encouraging our student-athletesto participate in multiple activities during their highschool careers. Statistically, nearly 97% of all studentswho participate in high school athletics do not continuecompetitive athletic careers beyond the interscholasticlevel. Making the most of the high school experienceshould be something adults, parents and coachesencourage and honor among our students.”This year was another outstanding year with multiplesportparticipants. Lake High School student-athletesagain broke the trend toward sport “specialization” asthirty-three (33) students participated in three sportseasons during the 2009-2010 school year. Brownstated, “This number (of three-sport participants)reflects a continual increase in active, extra-curricularinvolvement on the part of these students. Along withthe positive parental support these young people receiveat home, we believe these statistics reflect how ourcoaches promote the multi-sport concept within ourschool district. Our Lake Local coaches and athleteshave worked together to manage practice schedules inaccommodating the student-athletes’ needs. Personally,I think having our most competitive kids involved in amultitude of our athletic teams only makes our sportprograms stronger. I think the results of that philosophyhave been evident this year with the increased successesmany of our teams have experienced.”To receive the honor, a student-athlete must meet thefollowing criteria:• Participate in three Lake Local Board of Educationrecognizedsport programs during the same schoolyear.• Attend, on a daily basis, team practices and contestsin each sport participated.• Finish the season in “good standing” (per Lake HSathletic policy).Student-athletes need not letter in a given sport orseason to be eligible for the award. Each year of sportactivity (beginning with the 2004-2005 school year)earns a different level award:• First year: chenille patch• Second year: pin• Third year: small plaque• Fourth year: large photo plaque (to student)and permanent display in gym lobby.Lake High School student-athletes winning awards forthe 2009-2010 school year were:FIRST YEAR:Matt Downing (12):Conner Frank (12):Cross-Country, Swimmingand TrackCross-Country, Swimmingand TrackLauren McGeehen (12): Cross-Country, Basketballand TrackCasey Guthrie (11): Football, Wrestling and TrackJessica Tompkins (11): Cross-Country, Swimmingand TrackMatthew Gallegly (10): Football, Soccer and TrackEric Soppi (10): Cross Country, Wrestlingand TrackMikayla Belopotoski (9): Cross-Country, Basketballand TrackKyle Crites (9): Football, Basketball andBaseballBrittany Cuffman (9): Cheer, Cheer and SwimmingEthan Dutton (9): Football, Basketball andBaseballMadison Enos (9): Cheer, Cheer and TrackCaleb Frank (9): Soccer, Swimming and TrackZach Gazdacko (9): Football, Basketball andBaseballJeremy Jagger (9): Football, Bowling and BaseballAndrew Swan (9): Football, Basketball andBaseballJaylyn Vance (9): Volleyball, Cheer and TrackSECOND YEAR:Daniel Reed (11):Greg Suman (11):Keith Brown (10):Kristen Conti (10):Jarrod Daugherty (10):Tracy Heupel (10):Dylan Seibel (10):Jonathon Spohn (10):Kurt Wolf (10):THIRD YEAR:Alex Parslow (11):Allison Pixler (11):Football, Basketball and TrackGolf, Basketball and TrackFootball, Wrestling and TrackSoccer, Basketball and TrackFootball, Wrestling andBaseballCheer, Cheer and TrackFootball, Basketball andBaseballFootball, Basketball and TrackSoccer, Football and BasketballCheer, Cheer and SoftballDance, Dance and TrackFOURTH YEAR:Ryan Christiansen (12): Football, Basketball and TrackMike Klopfer (12):Geoff McGinnis (12):McKenna Strole (12):Megan Warner (12):Soccer, Swimming and TrackCross Country, Basketballand TrackCross-Country, Swimmingand TrackSoccer, Basketball and TrackBlue Streak AthleticParents and FansEncouraged to Utilizethe Lake WebsiteLake Local Schools’ parents ofstudent-athletes and all Blue Streakfans are reminded that the officialwebsite for all areas related to theathletic department and teams is:www.lake.stark.k12.oh.us/athletics.We encourage all parents to check ona regular basis (even during thesummer!) for updates and importantinformation concerning our BlueStreak athletic teams and events. LAKE ATHLETIC NEWSBlue Streak Spring Sport Highlights – 2010Boys and Girls Track:The 2010 track and field season was a very competitive year for both the girls and theboys. The girls’ team’s highlights included scoring more total team points in dualmeets than last year. They placed 11th at the Stark County meet, fifth out of 12 teamsat the Bill Barry Invitational in Tallmadge and fourth out of 15 teams at the OrangeBowl relays in Ellet. The girls team also had first place finishes at the Sandy ValleyMini Relays for the third year in a row, and at the Revere Relays. The boys season highlights included a first place finish at the Sandy Valley Mini Relaysfor the third year in a row, followed by another first place finish at the Bill BarryInvitational at Tallmadge for the second year in a row. Then the Blue Streaks had animpressive fourth place finish out of 20 teams at a very competitive Stark CountyMeet. The boys team combined points with the girls team in finishing as the overallchampion at the Revere Relays. The boys tied for fourth place at the Orange BowlRelays in Ellet. The boys team broke 2 school records this year; one of the records was the 4x100 relayat 43.64, besting last year’s then-record. Members of the relay were Jim Luther, WesWilson, Dan Reed, and Ryan Christiansen. The other new record was set in the 4x200at 1:31.64 by Jim Luther, Mike Schafer, Dan Reed, and Ryan Christiansen. That recordwas later broken again at 1:31.21 by Jim Luther, Jake Viscounte, Dan Reed and RyanChristiansen.Baseball:Our 9th and JV teams had outstanding seasons. The 9th graders went 6-4 in theFederal League and finished 16-6 overall. Our JVs completed their league schedule at7-4 and went 18-5 overall. Congratulations to both squads and their coaches for agreat effort throughout the season. There were numerous highlights to this year’s varsity team; in no particular order, some of these highlights included:– Beating Hoover THREE times, including a 7-1 win in the Sectional tournament– Winning all four extra-inning games played this season– Producing their best effort down the backstretch of the season and going 12-2during that run– A team batting average of .305– Four pitchers with ERAs under 2.00– All three teams posting winning records– And, of course, making a run to the District Championship game once again.Congratulations to all of this year’s team members and coaches. The tradition of LakeBaseball continues to grow and improve.Softball:After a challenging start of the season, the girls JV softball team gained momentumand found ways to win as they carved out an overall 15-8 record. The team’s threejuniors, Meghan Rozumny, Megan Clevenger, and Maggie Conner, were excellentleaders and provided those skills in many victories. Every girl displayed improvementand accomplished great feats this year. The team established itself as one of the best JVsquads in the Federal League, with their only losses to Perry and Jackson. We hope thisgroup of young ladies continue to work at their game during the off-season and areable to contribute to next year’s varsity squad. After losing eight seniors from last year’s varsity squad, there was a lot of effort andwork in front of this season’s varsity softball team. The team was led by our onlysenior, Chelsy Testa who was a tremendous leader for the team. There were big winsover Jackson, Tallmadge, and Louisville who represented some of the top-rated teamsin our district. Despite the team’s youthfulness, the team competed strongly againstthe always challenging Federal League schedule. With the majority of our teamreturning next year, we have a lot to look forward to.Boys Tennis:The Junior Varsity Team was anchored by a few experienced veteranplayers but for the most part was composed of first-year players. Still, this very young team competed well given their very difficult scheduleas they posted a 5-11 record. The players gained valuable exposure totough competition and showed real improvement by season end. Many of the players are already working hard looking forward to beinga part of what they hope will be their first varsity season. The Boys Varsity Tennis team approached the season with highexpectations and did not disappoint. With arguably the toughestschedule in school history, the team posted an impressive 13-4 overallrecord which included wins over state-ranked teams like Cleveland StIgnatius and Hudson. The Blue Streaks finished as Federal Leaguerunner-up (to state-ranked Jackson) but posted many milestonevictories including their first varsity win over the Hoover Vikings in 22years. Once again, the team competed at the annual Louisville DoublesClassic and for the first time in 22 years the Streaks captured the TeamChampionship by winning all three flights in impressive fashion.Losing only one senior bodes well for next year but with another toughschedule, including the always rugged Federal League, the coachingstaff is already busy laying the groundwork for a productive off-seasonto ensure the team continues to build on this year’s success.Congratulations to the Boys Tennis program for an outstanding effortthis season.Blue Streak Student-Athletes EarnAll League HonorsThe following Lake High School student-athletes recently were namedAll-Federal League in their respective spring sport seasons:BOYS TENNIS: Joshua Duerr Second TeamJared GergonSecond TeamDale BooherSecond TeamChristian McCauleySecond TeamRoss WhittakerFirst TeamSOFTBALL: McKenna Stephens Honorable MentionBrier SannerHonorable MentionChelsy TestaSecond TeamTRACK: Megan Warner Honorable MentionLevi SimmonsHonorable MentionJim LutherHonorable MentionRyan EnlowSecond TeamJustin GroubertFirst TeamBASEBALL: Mason Stephens Honorable MentionKyle TisdaleSecond TeamTrent SmithSecond TeamJoe SmithFirst Teamvolume 14, issue 6 BLUE STREAK NEWS 7
