Anga Timils<strong>in</strong>a, coord<strong>in</strong>a<strong>to</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> U.N. DevelopmentProgramme’s anti-corrupti<strong>on</strong> effort, said press scrut<strong>in</strong>y expedites <strong>the</strong>achievement of Millenium Development Goals, eight anti-poverty benchmarksthat world leaders have committed <strong>to</strong> reach<strong>in</strong>g by 2015. “The pressdef<strong>in</strong>itely has a role <strong>to</strong> play <strong>in</strong> achiev<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> [goals] through a range ofactivities … mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> governments and d<strong>on</strong>ors resp<strong>on</strong>sive and accountable<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir promises.”In fact, journalists such as <strong>the</strong> award-w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g Ghanaian reporter AnasAremeyao Anas have recorded spectacular successes <strong>in</strong> nam<strong>in</strong>g and sham<strong>in</strong>g<strong>the</strong> perpetra<strong>to</strong>rs of corrupti<strong>on</strong>, child abuse, and human traffick<strong>in</strong>g.As <strong>the</strong> press pursues <strong>in</strong>vestigative s<strong>to</strong>ries, he said, it has an obligati<strong>on</strong> <strong>to</strong>focus <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> public good and <strong>to</strong> avoid a fixati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g down politicalfigures. “You catch <strong>the</strong> pers<strong>on</strong> hand <strong>in</strong> soup,” said Aremeyao, known for hisundercover work. “But you give <strong>the</strong>m an opportunity <strong>to</strong> expla<strong>in</strong> because <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> explanati<strong>on</strong>, you f<strong>in</strong>d a soluti<strong>on</strong>, i.e., ‘I did so because <strong>the</strong> governmentis not pay<strong>in</strong>g us well.’”Mohamed Keita is CPJ’s Africa advocacy coord<strong>in</strong>a<strong>to</strong>r.23
