OVER 18’s ONLY
WELCOME TO OUR LATEST
‘WHAT’S GOING ON’ MAGAzINE...
Thanks to everyone who complimented us on the
inaugural publication from last year, and we hope
you will find this second issue an equally good read
and useful for planning in late 2012 and into the
New Year.
Looking back on 2012...
2012 was again another good year for the scene,
with all areas of the UK continuing to see a
resurgence in interest locally, and some tremendous
national events taking place.
Highlights for myself include guest appearances
at the fabulous Ritz Ballroom, Brighouse, West
Yorkshire - an incredible venue that continues to
lead the way over in Yorkshire, the recent Preston
Guild celebrations where we appeared in a stunning
Spiegel Tent in Avenham Park, the return of Ian
Levine and Colin Curtis to the Manchester Ritz All
Dayer in March, the establishing of a great new
Soul night in Sheffield at the City Hall, The King
George’s Hall in Blackburn still going strong and
now into its 18th year, The “Summer in the Park” All
Dayer and soul nights at the luxurious Dunkenhalgh
Hotel in Accrington, the “Pendulum” reunion
event in Manchester, The Luxury Soul weekender
at the Hilton Blackpool, the excellent 3-roomed
All Nighters at the Winter Gardens Blackpool,
and of course the totally brilliant Blackpool Tower
“Togetherness” weekenders which are now firmly
established in May as well as November.
I’ve also enjoyed being a first-Wednesday-ofthe-month
guest on John Kane’s excellent radio
programme on BBC Radio Sheffield/ Leeds, and
of course presenting some bank holiday specials
for Smooth Radio, and just recently appearing with
Pete Roberts for Radio 5 live.
One of the most memorable events of the past year
took place back in August at the King George’s Hall
when, for the duration of one weekend, the venue
was dressed as Wigan Casino (even down to the
DJ turntables) for the filming of the All Nighter
scenes in the forthcoming movie, “Northern Soul”.
Over 1000 attended the filming and I have to say it
was absolutely stunning - the attention to detail was
so precise and what an experience for so many on
the scene to get the opportunity to be part of what
I am sure will become THE defining film about the
Northern scene. I can exclusively reveal that the UK
premiere will take place early next year at The King
George’s Hall in Blackburn.
On the record front, my “Northern Soul Collectors
(volume 1)” 2CD set eventually came out via EMI
GOLD, while on the GO AHEAD label front, I was
pleased to get another six single releases out in
limited edition picture sleeves from Prince Phillip
Mitchell, Bettye Swann, Jackie Wilson, Kenny
Thomas, Dana Valery and Gloria Scott.
Looking forward...
With Christmas fast approaching, there are a
couple of festive events I’d like to recommend to
you. On Saturday 8th December we hold our very
first “Christmas Motown and Soul” party at the
Tower Ballroom, Blackpool. It will be a great night
with live band “The Soul Train” on stage and a
tip-top line-up of local DJs spinning the soul hits
from the 60s to today.
Then on Sunday 23rd December it’s our annual
Christmas All Dayer at the Dunkenhalgh Hotel and
Spa, Clayton-le-Moors near Accrington. Held in
immaculate 4-star luxury, there will be two rooms
with Northern and Motown, and another dedicated
to Soulful Dance and Modern Soul at an event that
will run from midday to midnight.
2013 is the 40th anniversary year of Chris Burton’s
legendary “Golden Torch” All Nighters and probably
the biggest news right now is that the event will
be celebrated in the Potteries and beyond with a
one-off “Legends” All Nighter at Keele University on
Saturday April 6th. Having been to see the venue
I can assure you that this is now a very impressive
location, and although 2,000 admissions are being
made available, this will be one of the most sought
after tickets of the year. The Keele Allnighters are
sadly missed, and this welcome return on a
once-a-year basis coincides with a multi-million
pound redevelopment of the campus, which will
be a stunning backdrop to a 3-roomed event
featuring, not only the ultimate in Northern Soul“
from The Wheel to Keele”, but there will also a
state-of-the-art Modern Soul room and another,
dedicated to what many have been asking for, a
genuine “rare and underplayed” session.
We got more good news recently regarding the
return of the Prestatyn Soul Weekender - now the
dust has settled following the takeover by Britannia
in early 2011, Pontin’s are fired up and ready to
go with a huge 3 day event over the weekend of
March 8-10th 2013. With a DJ line-up that bears
comparison with any and exclusive American live
acts The Vibrations, Ronnie McNeir and Vince
Broomfield (from Audio) appearing, plus recessionbeating
prices and refurbished venues and
accommodation, it’s no wonder that over 2,000
have booked to go already.
We all know about the famous Wigan Casino,
and on the 23rd of September next year, it will be
exactly 40 years since Mike Walker and Gerry
Marshall opened the doors to that first All Nighter.
Lots of us, DJs, dancers and collectors alike hold
Wigan Casino dear to our hearts and we have
therefore designated two venues to celebrate the
40th anniversary in style in September 2013. To do
justice to the memory of The Casino, we feel that
only the right venues of a comparable stature have
to be used, so we have two mighty events now
confirmed. Firstly, on Saturday September 21st,
an historic first-ever “Casino All Nighter” at the
Tower Ballroom, Blackpool and then on the
following Saturday, another All Nighter, this time
at the King George’s Hall, Blackburn where we
have regularly held Casino anniversaries since the
late 1990s. More details will be announced as the
dates approach, but DJs exclusively booked at this
stage include Casino stalwarts Steve Whittle, Dave
Evison, and Chris King, supported by Kev Roberts
and myself with support from Ginger Taylor, Mark
Freeman and live acts to be announced soon.
The early part of next year is dominated with
anniversaries - Saturday 26th January sees the 18th
anniversary of the 3-roomed soul night out at The
King George’s Hall, Blackburn then just two weeks
later on Saturday 9th February, we hold our second
Richard Searling
anniversary 3-roomed All Nighter at the Winter
Gardens in Blackpool, where attendances
have been going from strength to strength.
Then on Saturday 16th February, on the other side
of the Pennines, it’s the first anniversary of the soul
nights at the Sheffield City Hall, where the local
DJs involved have been doing a magnificent job
in spreading the word and firmly establishing this
landmark venue on the calendar.
With so much going on next year, my guest sets will
be somewhat limited, but I am looking forward to
my return to the Ritz Ballroom in Brighouse, West
Yorkshire on Friday 18th January and a special
“forgotten classics” Saturday afternoon set with Kev
at the fantastic Whitby Weekender on the 6th July.
It’s a sad goodbye to “The Twisted
Wheel”...
One of the last original venues, The Twisted Wheel
in Manchester, finally closes its doors with a
“bow-out” session on Sunday 30th December this
year. The last ever All Nighter took place back in
September to a lock-out attendance, and promoter/
organiser Pete Roberts has asked me to convey
his thanks to everyone who has been part of the
massive success enjoyed at the venue since Pete
rescued and revived the venue and the brand some
12 years ago.
It closes due to no fault of the scene, but rather
a local council decision to grant permission for
another hotel to be erected.
Manchester is the UK’s fastest-growing city and
I’m proud to be a Mancunian, however to allow
such a historical and musically integral part of our
city’s heritage to close, really is unfathomable.
Pete and John Green , the two resident DJs will
look forward to us all joining them for their four
final dates: Friday 30th November (9pm-2am),
Sunday 9th December (3pm - 8pm), Friday 28th
December and then the grand finale on Sunday
30th December.
Pete and John will now be moving the Wheel dates
on an identical “second Sunday of the month,
last Friday of the month” basis to their excellent
new cellar club venue, Club NQ (formerly Club
Moho Live) on Tib Street in the city.
Yours soulfully,
Richard Searling

THE HOME OF GOOD TIMES AND GREAT SOUL MUSIC

NORTHERN SOUL
A FAMILY AFFAIR!
In the first ‘What’s Going On’ magazine,
we talked about how there are many
offshoots, born out of the ‘Northern Soul’
scene (Crossover, Modern etc.). But on further
examination, even ‘Classic Northern’ seems
to be evolving into two discrete scenes, which,
for clarity, we’ll call the ‘Progressive Northern’
and the ‘Nostalgia Northern’ scenes.
These scenes are related but they are not the
same. They’re probably cousins but certainly
not twins. They have the same genes… if not
the same jeans!
In this short article, I’ll try to explain the
key differences:
1. The ‘Progressive’ Northern Scene
The ‘Progressive Northern’ scene is frequented by
folk who want to hear, play and discover tracks that
are ‘new to them’. Those who attend these events
want to ‘hear something different’ on a regular
basis, to keep them stimulated and to ‘keep them
coming back for more’ – ‘Just like it was in the old
days’… seeking out the next big tune, being true to
the ‘ethos’ and ‘Keeping The Faith’.
The DJ’s on this ‘Progressive Northern’ scene tend
to play new and more recent discoveries. They are
as conscious of the 40+ year history as anyone
else - to ensure that what they are ‘breaking’ is
truly ‘new’ or exclusive - but it is these DJ’s, and
those who eagerly attend wherever they play,
that keep the scene going. They work hard at it,
are dedicated, some might say fanatical, about
their chosen path. They constantly seek those
elusive sounds and are generally some of the most
passionate people you could ever wish to meet
when it comes to talking about the music.
In this scene, and there are numerous exceptions,
many discovered the music in the latter days of
Wigan or sometime after it closed its doors.
They found ‘Northern Soul’ at such places as
Stafford, 100 Club, Rotherham Clifton Hall,
Cleethorpes ‘After Dark’, Bradford, Warrington,
Keele and are catered for nowadays at ‘upfront’
events throughout the UK and Europe with
dedicated rooms in the leading venues such
as WWthe King’s Hall Stoke Allnighter.
2. The ‘Nostalgia’ Northern Scene
The ‘Nostalgia Northern’ scene is frequented by
people who want to hear and play tracks that are
familiar to them, to keep them stimulated and to
‘keep them coming back for more’ – ‘Just like it
was in the old days’… reminiscing about their
youth, being true to the old tunes and ‘Keeping
The Faith’.
The visitors here probably left the scene sometime
before Wigan closed its doors, missed the 80’s
and 90’s, spent the decades, between then and
now, growing up, getting married, having kids,
living and working to pay the mortgage, getting
divorced, being made redundant, retraining for a
new career, paying off the mortgage, remarrying
and then rediscovering their youth with a bit of
‘Northern Soul’.
These folk don’t want, or need, to travel around
the country every weekend in pursuit of the ‘next
big thing’ or new discovery. They’ve been there,
done that and are happy to enjoy the memories.
Nothing new there. Older folk have been looking
in the rear-view mirror for thousands of years.
But, unlike previous generations, these 50 or 60
somethings won’t have to grow old alone. They
have plenty of opportunity to spread their wings
and grow old disgracefully if they choose to at any
number of events throughout the north; enjoying
a drink or two, catching up with old faces and
making new friends, to incredible music that takes
them back a bit, keeps the pulse racing, raises a
smile and keeps the heartbeat turned up!
And it sure beats crown green bowling!
Nowadays the ‘Nostalgia Northern’ scene has
attracted many ‘new faces’ to Soul Music and
taken to playing and enjoying more ‘post Wigan’
sounds. The NS Top 500 has recently been
revised to reflect this; not too very long ago ‘I’m So
Happy’ and ‘Home Is Where The Heart Is’ were
considered ‘Modern’ by many, whereas now these
are considered Northern Soul Classics!
The heritage side of things and the ‘legacy’ of the
Northern Scene, at its absolute peak in the 70’s,
in the North of England, is still seen as something
that many Northern Soul fans feel quite proud
of. And (even though many got busy doing other
things, some 30 odd years ago) just like a prodigal
son, it seems somehow more valuable to them
now. Middle age brings greater lifestyle choice
and ‘Northern Soul’ is something many want to
celebrate and enjoy, free of someone else’s ‘rules’
and ‘pressures’, and they just want to relive a
bit of it all over again.
3. The Soul Family
Given these two scenes have common
Grandparents, it’s important not to enter
into a ‘family feud’ of sorts. We all have more
in common with each other than we have
differences and it’s therefore wrong to
criticise the family from either side.
The ‘Progressive’ scene will just keep on
‘progressing’ just so long as those that are
on it ‘want’ to do it.
The ‘Nostalgia’ scene will also just keep on
doing what it wants to do. Enjoying the music,
the friendships and even creating new memories
along the way.
At my time of life, I like to think I can enjoy it all,
regardless, because the MUSIC is important to
me and because the Tomangoes, Jimmy Burns
and Sam Williams sound every bit as good to
me now as they did 40 years ago.
Life is far too short, for Soul fans, or anyone
else, to be overly concerned with other people’s
choices. We grow together rather than apart and
embrace the differences, enjoying this fabulous
music wherever and whenever we can!
With plenty on offer, we look forward to many
Soulful years ahead!
THE 40 YEAR ITCH
Pretty much every year I end up agreeing with
most Soulies that our beloved scene is in better
health than the previous one. It certainly knows
no bounds.
During 2012 another feature length movie got
close to a wrap and ready for a 013 launch,
Inspector George Gently surprised us with an
episode dedicated to the genre and crowds
rocketed at a fair few events.
The highlights for me personally were the Tower,
(May) with a stunning emotional ending. The Kings
Hall Stoke All Nighter, particularly the July one,
whereby the car park resembled Station Rd,
Wigan circa ’75. And the Cleethorpes Pier All
Dayer in August which saw a terrific turnout with
music to match. At this time, the venue is being put
up for sale, so hopefully events will continue should
a new owner be found.
Well after 40 years I am enjoying the scene far
more than the past. So let’s take a look at the
contributing factors to the feel good factor rippling
through our weekend’s at present.
I could start by citing Inspector George Gently
which certainly topped the curiosity meter during
one barmy Summer night. Personally I thought the
script was weak to say the least.
The filming in Blackburn of the new Northern Soul
movie created a real buzz and we look forward to
seeing the latest motion picture about our beloved
scene sometime in late 013. Look out for a WGO
contributor playing a ‘screw’.
Numbers at some events have risen sharply, while
others have remained static or even declined.
Clearly a new influx of 40/50 somethings have
arrived, largely due to the music they may have
collected in the past, being unavailable to dance to
in any retro formula.
Love Is The Drug-Roxy Music and Jean Genie-
Bowie probably felt right at the time, but today its
fixed firmly to a Radio Station or Ipod. Northern
on the other hand is one great treasure chest of
discoveries to newbies. So if you are one of those,
come on in...the water is delightful!
Facebook: Goldsoul Events
Twitter: @goldsoulupdate @kev_roberts
Live acts seem to be on the upturn. Boy do we
now have withdrawal symptoms due to not having
the Edwin Starrs available. I see The Impressions
are getting across the pond quite regularly and
word is Motown’s The Contours are scheduled for
up 10 dates in 013.
Good to see Prestatyn back. Weekenders have
been notoriously difficult to promote in the past,
largely due to the venue’s lack of understanding
as to the type of customer they are attracting.
Fortunately the North Wales site is in experienced
hands. Hopefully the 2 events a year at the venue
will stimulate fans of the 3-4 day culture.
With the King’s Hall, Stoke, firmly ranked as the All
Nighter you ‘must go to’, it’s good to see a classic
returning to compliment the 17 year history of the
UK’s leading ‘niter. Keele returns on April 6 for a
special All Nighter in 3 rooms. Plans are afoot
for a mini weekender later in the year too, due
to the amount of on site accommodation the
University have.
I finally got around to updating the Top 500.
The older versions are all out of print and I thought
it best to create a definitive edition based on the
movement’s 45 year history. A plus point being the
images are in full colour which proved too costly
in 2000 when first released. I urge you to buy it...
well a guy’s gotta eat lol
Finally, back at Goldsoul HQ, we launched our
NEW website in October plus the new App for
the iPhone. You can now listen to Goldsoul Radio
24/7 completely DJ Free. The site is far easier to
see what’s happening and order tickets for events
with clear links to reach our venue fan pages on
Facebook. And with all this technology, time to
update our contact details.
Have a great end to 2012 and we’ll see you at
a gig real soon.
Warmest regards,
Kev
