Other factors influencing recoveryRaised temperature This is normal in the first 2-3 days following the operation and isa sign of a good immune response. Generally, the younger the patient the morelikelihood of a temperature there is following surgery. It does not indicate aninfection in the hip, although occasionally it is a sign of a chest infection.Constipation Absence of bowel motion for the first 2-3 days is normal following hipreplacement. This is a side effect of the anaesthetic and the painkillers. A highfibre (roughage) diet and high fluid intake is helpful as is a stool softener(lactulose). Bowel stimulants and enemas can over treat the problem and lead tovery loose stools.Hygiene You may shower one day after the operation. I specifically seal thewound with a layer of glue and choose a waterproof dressing to allow you toshower. A bath is reasonable at six weeks onwards. Swimming is encouraged fromday twelve onwards.Alcohol From the second day of your recovery you can enjoy alcohol inmoderation. However if you are taking warfarin or strong painkillers (tramadol ordihydrocodeine) then alcohol should be avoided due to drug interactions.Depression There is a big psychological build up to the operation andanaesthetic. It is not uncommon to feel a sense of relief or joy initially after youroperation sometimes followed by a negative rebound of tears or low feelings. Thisis entirely normal and you are certainly not alone. These feelings will fade as youreturn to your normal activities and enjoy a new chapter of life without the pain ofhip arthritis. If depressive feelings persist beyond two weeks please see your GP.Mr James LewisConsultant Orthopaedic SurgeonSpecialist in Minimally Invasive Hip and Knee Surgery
