there are many areas in mathematics, and many of them arelinked to other fields of knowledge, flexibility is of the utmostimportance.—Common ground for all programmes will include calculus in oneand several real variables and linear algebra.—We propose a broad list of further areas that graduates should beacquainted with in order to be easily recognised as mathematicians. It is not proposed that all programmes include individual modulescovering each of these areas.—We do not present a prescriptive list of topics to be covered, but wedo mention the three skills we consider may be expected of anymathematics graduate:(a) the ability to conceive a proff,(b) the ability to model a situation mathematically,(c) the ability to solve problems using mathematical tools.—The first cycle should normally allow time to learn somecomputing and to meet at least one major area of application ofmathematics.—We should aim for a wide variety of flavours in second cycleprogrammes in mathematics. Their unifying characteristic featureshould be the requirement that all students carry out asignificant amount of individual work. To do this, a minimum of90 ECTS credits seems necessary for the award of a Master’squalification.—It might be acceptable that various non-identical systems coexist, but large deviations from the standard (in terms of corecurriculum or cycle structure) need to be grounded in appropriateentry level requirements, or other program specific factors, whichcan be judged by external accreditation. Otherwise, such degreesrisk not benefiting from the automatic European recognitionprovided by a common framework, even though they mayconstitute worthy higher education programmes.1. A common framework: what it should and shouldn’t be or do1.1. The only possible aim in agreeing a «common Europeanframework» should be to facilitate the automatic recognition ofmathematics degrees in Europe in order to help mobility. By this wemean that when somebody with a degree in mathematics fromcountry A goes to country B:162
