the Eifel National Park
Through the heart of nature

In summer, the meadows in the southern valleys are full of fragrant wild herbs.
Four days’ perfect time out
Gushing streams, fragrant meadows full of flowers, dense forests and
panoramic views. In four days, the Wilderness Trail will take you through
the entire Eifel National Park. From Monschau-Höfen in the south to the
northern tip near Hürtgenwald-Zerkall. On hikes of between 18 and 25
kilometres in length, you will see all the variety and beauty of nature.
Signs marked with the wildcat symbol will take you a total of 85 kilometres
through all the habitats and landscapes of the national park: through
meadows full of daffodils and the coniferous forests of the southern part
of the national park, past the dam and river landscapes in the heart of
the area, over the wide grassy plain of the Vogelsang former military
training area, and through the near-natural deciduous forests of the north
of the national park.
Since the beginning of 2004, timber, fruit and other natural products have
no longer been harvested in the 10,700 hectare protection area. Under
the motto “Let nature be nature”, flora and fauna can now develop freely
over a large area.
Explore the region
As an alternative or in addition to a continuous four-day hike through the
park, you could “take a day off” to explore the region. Museums, friendly little
towns and idyllic open-air swimming pools await your visit. All sorts of
information and tips are available from the National Park Gates in Monschau-
Höfen, Simmerath-Rurberg, Schleiden-Gemünd, Heimbach and Nideggen.
As well as a Tourist Information Centre, each of these information points
offers an exhibition on the flora and fauna of the national park. Entry to the
National Park Gates is free. They are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Information about hiking package tours
You can tailor your short break on the Wilderness Trail to requirements
or book it as a package.
Four days' perfect time out: plunge into the natural forests of tomorrow. As well as wildcats there are many other wildlife species in the national park.
The basic package from EUR 169.00 includes:
- 3 nights bed & breakfast
- the return trip from the destination, Zerkall, to the starting point, Höfen,
with the Rurtal regional railway and the “Trail-Express” dial-a-bus service
(can also be used for individually planned trips)
- the hiking guide “Der Wildnis-Trail im Nationalpark Eifel” (available in
German only; can be subtracted from the price of the package if not
required)
- a map of the trails in the Eifel National Park
- a Wilderness Trail badge
- a hiking pass for stamping and a certificate on completion of the hike
through the national park
You will stay with certified Eifel National Park hosts. These small businesses
support the goals of the protection area and adhere to the environmental
and quality criteria set out by Viabono (an association for sustainable
tourism) or the regional brand EIFEL. The hosts will give their guests
comprehensive information on everything the Eifel National Park has to
offer and will also be delighted to pass on insiders’ tips for your visit to
the adventure region.
Additional options available: transportation of luggage, central
accommodation with transfer to the starting and finishing points of the
different sections of the hike, or additional "days off". The Wilderness
Trail can be an extraordinary experience if you have yourself accompanied
by a National Park forest guide on one or more of the sections.
Internet tip
Whether you wish to book the hiking package or plan your trip individually,
useful information on how to prepare your Wilderness Trail hike is to be
found on the website www.nationalpark-eifel.de. If you like hiking with
GPS, the data is available on this website free of charge. Elevation profiles
indicate the level of difficulty of the various sections. Useful links and
contact data help with your journey to and from the national park – also
using local public transport.
