WIRTGEN PROJECTIT IS POSSIBLE!Making happen what appears to be impossible isone of Faymonville´s specialties. To illustrate, theexpert is currently developing an extremely lightlowbed semi-trailer for the authorisation-freetransport of cold milling machines.Nothing´s impossible. That this motto is a day-to-day reality forFaymonville is demonstrated by its latest development for the Wirtgencompany, the world´s market leader for cold milling machines used inroad-building. At the beginning of 2008, Wirtgen asked Faymonvilleabout a tractor-trailer combination for the transport of the nearly22-tonne model W 150 cold milling machine which would remainunder the total weight of 41.8 tonnes allowed in Germany for regulartransports. Since previous combinations exceeded this weight limit, they always required a special authorisation for heavy transports. In close and intensive collaboration with Wirtgen, the Faymonvilleengineers successfully optimised the weight of a 3-axle basic model ofthe already extra-light Euromax - while retaining the same technicalcharacteristics - to such an extent that it was possible to remain belowthe required 41.8-tonne maximum weight without any difficulty.“By using high-tensile fine-grained steels as well as an optimisedconstruction technique in the area of the gooseneck, the tare weight ofthe trailer amounts to only around 8.2 tonnes", reports Rainer Noe,the Faymonville sales representative involved in the project. In fact thewhole unit is still so far below the weight limit that an additional3,000-litre water tank can be carried on board as well. As a result, the otherwise common extra tank truck proves unnecessary.“The extra-long hydraulic ramps make it possible to give the cold millingmachines an especially flat drive-up angle. The tie-down winches whichare individually tailored to the milling machine ensure optimal loadsecuring“, Rainer Noe notes as further highlights of the newlydeveloped lowbed semi-trailer with friction steered axle. After the entireunit has once again been precisely weighed, Faymonville is planningthe presentation of this hitherto unique design in this spring.LASHING RINGSGlobalsolutionLoad tie-down is nowadays subject to more andmore severe legislation, and to ever more frequent checks. In order to facilitate the task of its clients, and to guaranteethe transport of loads in total safety, Faymonville has developeda global lashing solution. The solution proposed by Faymonville and itssupplier of lashing rings will be applied, with avery small number of exceptions, to the wholeof the Faymonville range. This solution consisted not only of developing newrings, but also of optimising the number of tie-downpoints on each type of semi-trailer. Each model inthe range has been analysed at the level of lashing, according to the loads likely to be carried. FrédéricKüpper, engineer, explains how the tie-down solutionhas evolved compared to the previous equipment:“Up to now, most lashing rings have been placed inpockets integrated into the exterior frames of thevehicles. This solution had two disadvantages:firstly, the incline angle of the ring was limited, and secondly, the rings became useless for thetie-down of loads placed flat on the loadingplatform and which were wider than the vehicle. The new generation rings now cover an incline angleof 150°. This evolution will also enable optimaltie-down of all types of loads.”directions and are compatible with all typesof hooks and straps. These are rings forgedin quality steel used in the manufacture oflifting chains. These rings are certified accordingto the European norm EN-12640 and arehomologated by the TÜV.Exhibited in Hanover in September 2008,these lashing rings are available sinceFebruary 2009.PRODUCT TO THE MAXThe ring has a tie-downcapacity of either 5,000 or10,000 daN.These rings now exist in two tie-down capacities:5,000 daN (5 tonnes) and 10,000 daN (10 tonnes). They provide 100% of their capacity in allThe new generation rings now cover anincline angle of 150°, thus enabling optimaltie-down of all types of loads.P. 05

Enter Modulmax.Faymonville has recently delivered a firstexample of its 24 axle-line Modulmax toTransport Van Egdom, a company located inHeist-op-den-Berg (B) and specialising in abnormaltransport. Why is this unit of interest? Arnold Luxen, sales manager: “The Modulmax is a product offeringa wide range of possibilities by combiningmodules – from where it gets its name – of 2 to6 axle lines. We have based it on 215/75R17.5tyres, with 8 tyres per axle line and a technicalcapacity of 36 tonnes. In fact, the load capacityof the axle is 16 tonnes at 80 km/h, a capacitywhich could technically be increased to36 tonnes at 1 km/h, which may be ofinterest for inter-factory transport,Faymonville has recentlydelivered a first example of its24 axle-line Modulmax to Transport Van Egdom, specialized in abnormal transport. With the ModulmaxFaymonville is offeringa solution able tosatisfy a wide rangeof clients.for example. It should be noted that the 2 to6 axle lines can be coupled together to make atotal of 24 axle lines. The field of application istherefore vast.”This type of product is not new to the market, butFaymonville is going further by dedicating a productionline in the Büllingen factory to this concept, with robotic welding amongst other features.P. 06

NEWSSemonsat (FR) convinced by the Mega 4+1French abnormal transport company Semonsatworked together with Faymonville on thedevelopment of a Mega 4+1 with swing axles. This semi-trailer is today being used for transportingmachines weighing up to 60 tonnes.Jean-François Semonsat is delighted with it:“This vehicle offers quite a few advantages:first of all its exceptional steering angle andits 4+1 conception which enables us to goanywhere. The vehicle is very simple to use, extendible and multi-purpose. It can in factbe used in various applications. The expandersalso represent an advantage. This is the2 nd Faymonville semi-trailer we have bought andare very pleased with it.”A MultiZ6 for Virosque (ES)Spanish group Virosque took possession a few monthsago of a Multimax semi-trailer fitted with6 steering axles specially developed for the transportof rail vehicles. The MultiZ6 is in particular equipped with crankedaxles which enabled to lower the load height to780 mm. It is also fitted with special multi-extendibleramps on which, when they are horizontal, a partof a train can be placed. This allows for a betterspread of weight. The ramps in fact are thustransformed into load supports. In order to loadthe train onto the trailer, the ramps deploy in themanner of a “folding ruler”.Capelle (FR) counts on the TeleZ4French transport group Capelle, which has been workingwith Faymonville for more than a decade, tookpossession of a 4-axle Telemax in 2008, tripleextendiblefor transporting the vanes of wind turbines. What is special about this trailer is it represents acombination between a Multimax and a Telemax. This semi-trailer receives the gooseneck from the firstand the axles mounted on to ball cage from the second. These offer a greater steering angle (55°) thanthe stub axles of the Multimax. As this semi-trailer is principally used for transportingthe vanes of wind turbines which can be up to50 metres long, the steering angle is very important. This solution is suitable for all types of long parts. The Capelle group has 26 sites in Europe, of which23 are in France, employs 900 people and operatesa fleet of 650 motor vehicles, 800 trailers and40 pilot cars.www.transports-capelle.frP. 11
