PARTICIPANT EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FORM2012-2013 LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMThe <strong>Ontario</strong> Nurses’ <strong>Association</strong> (ONA) is committed to providing a positive and inclusiveenvironment for all <strong>of</strong> its members. As such, ONA has recognized, in its Statement <strong>of</strong> Beliefs,that it is the Union’s responsibility to see that diversity is reflected at all levels <strong>of</strong> its leadership.Developing ONA’s leadership to reflect the diversity <strong>of</strong> our membership will ensure that the fullrange <strong>of</strong> viewpoints, ideas and perspectives <strong>of</strong> our members are represented in the policies,positions and culture <strong>of</strong> ONA. We will be further strengthened as a Union that provides andpromotes an environment <strong>of</strong> dignity and respect for everyone.In this spirit, in the fall <strong>of</strong> 2012, ONA is again <strong>of</strong>fering a Leadership Development Programspecifically designed to enhance the leadership skills <strong>of</strong> women from ONA’s designated groupsthat have traditionally been under-represented in leadership roles.The program will consist <strong>of</strong> 10 female participants from ONA’s designated groups – members <strong>of</strong>Aboriginal descent, racialized members, lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender members, memberswith disabilities, and Francophone members. Later in 2012, ONA will also recruit 10 femalementors from ONA’s designated groups to serve as a coach and mentors for the participants.This is a great opportunity for interested members to “fine tune” their coaching skills, to assist inbuilding our leaders <strong>of</strong> tomorrow and to experience leadership at ONA and in the labourmovement.The program will encourage participants to share their own experiences, to vision, engage indiscussion and debate, and to provide skills and information sharing. It will promote groupinteraction and support. This program requires a commitment from the participants to attend allsessions, complete assignments, be available for post-program follow-up and to be engaged inall aspects <strong>of</strong> the program. Most importantly, having acquired an understanding <strong>of</strong> the structures<strong>of</strong> ONA and the leadership opportunities within ONA, participants will be asked to create anaction plan and apply their key learnings to develop themselves as leaders in the structureswithin ONA. <strong>Participant</strong>s accepted for the program will be funded, by ONA, for meals,accommodations, salary and travel.Please note that dates for the Leadership Development Program have been establishedas outlined below. There will be increased representation <strong>of</strong> equity-seeking members in ONA leadershiproles (all levels). There will be increased trust and credibility between equity-seeking members andleaders within ONA. ONA will develop leaders who are more responsive to the diverse needs <strong>of</strong> members. <strong>Participant</strong>s will have acquired information, strategies, supports and skills to enable themto enhance their leadership abilities. The program ensures the integration <strong>of</strong> equity issues into all facets <strong>of</strong> ONA (services andgovernance). <strong>Participant</strong>s will be assertive, confident and empowered to assume leadership roleswithin ONA.The following are the expectations for participants in the Leadership DevelopmentProgram:oooooooo<strong>Participant</strong>s will attend all sessions.<strong>Participant</strong>s will fully participate in all sessions.<strong>Participant</strong>s will complete daily evaluations/reflections.<strong>Participant</strong>s will learn to listen, share, reflect, be kind, forgive, have fun, respect, explore,question, believe in themselves and in co-participants.<strong>Participant</strong>s will communicate and network via e-mail, telephone and video conferenceas set out in the program design.<strong>Participant</strong>s will complete specific assignments.<strong>Participant</strong>s will choose an opportunity to attend and observe a board meeting, and aProvincial Coordinators Meeting (PCM) or an Area Coordinators Conference (ACC).<strong>Participant</strong>s will choose an opportunity to attend and observe within their Local aBargaining Unit /Local and an Executive Meeting (in keeping with Local policy).LAD002_20120412_LDP<strong>Participant</strong> EOI
