6 – C waste repository zoneThis chapter describes the design of the vitrified C waste repository zone. It specifies how this designmakes allowance for the physical characteristics of C waste, in particular its thermal and chemicalcharacteristics, and fulfils the safety functions defined in chapter 3.1It then goes into detail on the options for the disposal packages, disposal cells and repository zonearchitecture.Finally it describes how these options can be implemented for a reversible disposal process that meetsoperational safety and security requirements.6.1 Primary C waste packagesVitrified waste is a product of spent fuel reprocessing. This includes mainly fission products andminor actinides (neptunium, americium and curium) formed by nuclear reaction and contained in thespent fuel, which are separated from the uranium and plutonium during the reprocessing operation.They are separated and incorporated into a glass matrix. The manufactured glass is poured attemperature into a stainless steel container.
