SeeAR …a new way to

explore reality …with your

mobile!

Demo of an application prototype based on OMA

Mobile Augmented Reality (MobAR) Enabler

OMA Demo Day - SeeAR, …a new way to explore reality …with your mobile!

Introduction

Carmen Criminisi, Telecom Italia

New York 12 July 2012

Augmented Reality (AR) blends interactive media with the real world and then the view

and the experience of the real world, mediated by an electronic device (often mobile),

are “augmented” by virtual digital objects (AR content). The AR content are typically

related to point of interest (POI) - characterized by the attributes such as geocoordinates,

description, contacts, and images - around the current location of the user

(the exact position and the direction the camera is pointing at is determined by GPS,

compass, and various sensors of the mobile phones).

The OMA Mobile Augmented Reality (OMA MobAR) aims at providing an overall

framework to enable mobile AR services that can assure cross-platform exchange of

AR Content and universal access to AR Content by providing new mechanisms for

transport, filtering and personalization of AR Contents. OMA MobAR is built over a

client-server model, with the MobAR Client that gets from the MobAR Server

information and content that can “augment” the scene the user is looking at through

his/her mobile device.

The demo (implemented by Telecom Italia) shows a MobAR enabled app (including the

MobAR Client) interacting with the MobAR Server and receiving information and

content based on geo-location information and preferences from the user; information

and contents are displayed in overlay with real-time camera-view of the phone.

AR Content Management, Personalization, Selection and Delivery (split between

MobAR Client and MobAR Server) functionalities:

–AR Target / AR Content retrieval from the MobAR Server using both pull and push

mechanisms

–Search for the AR Target and selection and retrieval of the AR Content based on the

receipt of requests from the MobAR Client or push requests related to the AR Target

and/or AR Content delivery

–Delivery mechanisms (both pull and push) used by the MobAR Enabler between the MobAR

Server and the MobAR Client

–Feedback and AR Metrics Data Handling (split between MobAR Client and MobAR Server)

functionalities:

–Collection of user feedback from the MobAR Client related to the AR Content consumption

–Collection of AR metrics data about AR Content and User's interactions with them (e.g.

click the displayed AR Content/Marker)

–Enhancements to the collected AR Metrics data with the data known to the MobAR

Server

–Processes for use as an additional input for future AR Content selection
