VOLUME 14, NUMBER 8
Fissler Banks on
Independents to
Showcase Product
by Karen Martin, Managing Editor
Breaking into the U.S. market with a new
line of cookware is never easy, but Fissler
USA, the exclusive North American
distributor for the 160 year old German
cookware company Fissler Gmbh, is banking
on a strong partnership with independent
retailers to make their case to
the U.S. consumers.
Fissler USA introduced four lines to the
US market in 2007, but Frances Ro,
President of Fissler USA, doesn’t like to
refer to “lines” of cookware. She explains,
“Fissler’s philosophy is that there isn’t one
ideal line for every chef. We feel that there
are pieces from each line that are crucial
for the perfect cookware arsenal at home.
For instance, every chef can benefit from
using one of our completely silent pressure
cookers, our Steelux frying pan for low-oil
grilling, our 100% PFOA-free and testwinning
frying pan, and an Intensa stewpot
which doubles as a strainer. We don’t
promote full lines, but encourage
consumers to add to their own collection
with functional and durable Fissler pieces.”
While this may be a slightly different
concept to the US market, it is definitely
working in their European markets.
Fissler is the market leader in Germany
with approximately 30% of the market
share according to Ro. She admits that a
newcomer to the US market faces many
challenges—a weak dollar, the high cost
of stainless steel and a slow economy.
Despite these challenges, Ro said, “The
timing has been good for a brand like
Fissler because the cookware industry in
the US has been lacking true innovation
and uniqueness in the last several years.
We are up front about our products: they
are premium, they are made in Germany,
and we don’t compromise on quality.”
Ro is counting on the independent retailers
to get the message of quality and innovation
across to the consumers, with some help, of
course. Her ideal retailer is one that has a
knowledgeable, consumer-oriented sales
Tramontina Expands in Wisconsin
Tramontina USA is expanding production at its
Manitowoc, Wisconsin factory and will hire approximately
80 people as it adds a third shift. The
company is looking for qualified applicants for both
entry-level and skilled positions, the majority of
which are permanent, full-time jobs.
“Our ‘Made in the U.S.A.’ initiative is really paying
out,” said Antonio Galafassi, President and CEO of
Tramontina USA. “Consumers appreciate highquality
U.S.-made products, plus we have a ‘green’
advantage. Domestic production shortens lead times
and minimizes transportation, which reduces fuel
consumption and the need for other resources.”
The company credits its ‘Made in the U.S.A.’ program
as one of the key reasons for the continued growth of
its business. Tramontina opened its Manitowoc factory
in 2005, where annual production began at 6 million
pieces of cookware and is now projected to be more than
10 million for 2008.
“There are several factors contributing to our constant
increased production demands, including the planned
introduction of a new cookware line early this summer,
as well as the placement of many ‘Made in the U.S.A.’
products with major national retailers,” said Galafassi.
Kitchenware News & Housewares Review AUGUST 2008 3

After 62 years in New York City Bridge
Kitchenware is moving to New Jersey. Why
leave NYC? “When my wife and I both work
we only see our children for five minutes,
and that’s no way to raise a family. It was really
tough on them this past December. We are
putting our family first and moving for a
better quality of life for our kids,” explained
Steven Bridge. “New Yorkers can still shop
with us on-line and receive it the next day. For
our customers outside of New Jersey there will
be no sales tax, just shipping fees. We have a
very strong online business and we hope that
our customers will understand and support our
decision.” Bridge Kitchenware is creating a
small store front showroom where they have
their warehouse in East Hanover, NJ. “There
are multiple rooms, which gives it the charm
of my father’s old store of 52nd Street,” said
Steven Bridge. “Our business plan will be to
return to our grass roots of focusing on the
professional chefs and offering these items to
the home chef as well We will have many new
products after we are settled, including a full
line of Sambonet tabletop products from Italy.
From the Publisher
Well, as I write this column in early
July, I have to say we have much to
report here at Kitchenware News &
Housewares Review (KNHR).
In the last few days of June, Oser
Communications, the parent company
Jim McNeil
of KNHR acquired Gourmet News,
a well known and well respected
Karen Martin
business newspaper for the gourmet industry.
The irony here is that 10 years ago, KNHR and Gourmet
News were sister publications, housed in the same office,
just up the road a piece from our current location in
Portland, Maine. So, of course we are absolutely delighted
to have the Gourmet News team join us, it is a reunion
of sorts. And yes, Anna Wolfe, Editor, will still head the
editorial team for Gourmet News.
Both publications will continue on their current editorial
mission, KNHR will continue to focus on new
products and industry trends in the kitchenware and
casual tabletop market, and Gourmet News will
continue to be the only all-news publication in the
gourmet industry.
In this issue, our Annual Holiday Guide (starting on p.
17) is a great resource for sourcing new products for your
4th quarter sales. Which reminds me, this is the time for
specialty retailers to finalize your merchandising for this
critical holiday season. Given the current economy, this
could be a banner year for kitchen tools and other categories
that offer product in lower price points.
From the Editor
Carole Dixon was one of the first
people that I met when I started in
this business. She was gracious,
welcoming and full of knowledge
about an industry where I was a
novice. I know that I am not alone
in having mixed feelings about
Carole’s retirement as director of
Forty One Madison and The New
York Merchandise Mart.
Of course, I am delighted for her. The chance to
spend more time with her grandchildren is wonderful.
Knowing Carole, I suspect she also has
some adventures in mind. A quick look around her
office gives you a hint about her adventurous side.
Seriously, how many people do you know who have
gone dog sledding?
The selfish part of me will miss her leadership in the
industry. I will also miss the fabulous parties, the excellent
seminars on important issues to the industry and her
expert industry analysis. A trip to the Fall or Spring Market
is not complete without at least a few minutes getting
Carole’s take on current happenings in the industry.
The search is on for a new director according to Rudin
Management, and Carol has agreed to stay on through
a transition period, again demonstrating her generous
nature. I do hope that Carole reports back to us on occasion
about her grandchildren, her tracking of the industry
and her new adventures. I’m taking bets on a visit
to Mount Everest.
Cookware Target Store’s promise of innovation and commitment to community
is bolstered by the introduction of IMUSA housewares products in select
The emergence of Hispanics as the largest minority group in the US,
Bakeware
and its consequent culinary imprint is affecting what’s available in
grocery and kitchen stores, and at large retailers like Target.
Salsa and hot sauce sales surpass ketchup. Tortillas
enable the popular “wrap” sandwich. And avocados,
mangos and cilantro can now be found in virtually
every produce department.
The IMUSA collection at Target provides shoppers with
an extensive array of housewares products for cooking Latin favorites,
from arroz con pollo to tamales and everything in between. From saucepans
and calderos, to comals, griddles, grills and kitchen gadgets, IMUSA and
Target offer US cooks a complete line of cookware, tools, and accessories
for preparing authentic Hispanic cuisine at home.
Romertopf Clay Bakers
The Romertopf gets even better in hard times, as it is simple, easy to work with and always the outcome
is delicious. The Romertopf allows you to use lesser cuts of meat and still get nice and tender results.
The Clay Baker—top and bottom—are submersed and soaked in water. The medium pot #111 for
example absorbs 8 oz of water, which is given off during the cooking process.
Starfrit’s Ceram-Eco Cookware
Having been in the Canadian cookware
business for over 45 years,
Starfrit took a new direction with the
recent launch of their new Ceram-
Eco non-stick cookware. As the
name suggests, this new coating
has its foundation in ceramics.
With a patented process exclusive
to Starfrit, Ceram-Eco products are
Enclume Design Products, Inc., maker of
premium quality cookware racks and accessories,
is launching an all-new mass market product line
with price points from just $49.99 to $99.99.
Accessories are priced from $9.99 to $24.99.
Stephen Frenzl, Enclume’s Marketing & Sales
Manager, reported, “We designed everything
about the line—products, packaging, sales
language, merchandising tools—based on the
input of consumer focus groups held around
the U.S. in recent months. Feedback has been
extremely positive, and we are confident that
the product to be offered is what consumers
are asking for.”
The new line is branded “RACK IT UP!” with
the tag line “Take Cooking to New Heights!”
The assortment is unprecedented in the way
made of “natural ceramic powder”
on the inside with a 99% recycled
aluminum exterior. According to
the manufacturer, Ceram-Eco is
the result of a new molecular
combination of ceramic, which
is well known for both quality
and durability.
“We really wanted to develop an
environmentally sensitive non-stick
surface with the same qualities
as traditional coatings yet free
of certain chemical components,”
stated Juanita Coumbias,
it is made, packaged, merchandised and sold
in the kitchenware market, and offers significant
new revenue opportunities for retailers in
a virtually untapped national market.
Ten distinct pot rack models (five ceiling and
five wall applications) are featured in the assortment.
Four accessories include grid, lowceiling
arms, decorative trim ceiling covers
and extra pot hooks. Pot racks are ready-toassemble
(RTA) and contained in full-color,
benefit-focused boxes designed for walk-away
sales. For in-store sales, they are showcased in
an eye-catching POP display rack that holds
24 boxes and a dozen accessory bags.
RACK IT UP! uses a new-technology anchor
that eliminates the need to locate and bolt to
joists or studs. Handymen are no longer
Director at Starfrit.
The redesign of the cookware
includes all parts of a pan.
Handles are now made from
durable materials like
bamboo. The packaging is
minimal and consists entirely
of recycled paper. The cookware
sets are sold in large,
reusable plastic containers.
steel-to-steel toggle/bolt system installs quickly
and easily in DRYWALL and safely holds
hundreds of pounds, many times more than the
the angst of installation that for years has been
a block to pot rack sales.
To provide RACK IT UP! products at prices
ZANDA PANDA Specialty Bakeware
introduces it’s new Kaleidoscope
Collection. The Butterfly Topper/
Cookie Mold is the first design
in this versatile series. Divided
into eight slices, the design
as a whole looks much like
the view from a child’s
kaleidoscope. With eight
butterflies nestled among
flowers and scrollwork, the
design ensures that everyone gets
a butterfly. Elegant enough for a
garden party, yet cute enough for kids, it can be
used as a ‘topper’ for a 9” cake, cheesecake or
pie, as a cookie mold, or for arts & crafts projects
like polymer clay jewelry or cast paper notecards.
To use the Butterfly Topper, paint chocolate or confectionary
coating into the shallow mold. Then place on
the cake or cheesecake and peel the mold from the
chocolate. Alternatively, marzipan or edible clay can be
pressed into the mold.
GreenPan’s Cookware
Fissler USA (continued from cover)
staff. “Though we focus on retailers who have
the ability to demonstrate our products in the
store or in classes, any retailer who understands
the need for good training is a great candidate,”
says Ro. “It is also crucial that sales staff use
our products at home, which is why we offer
demo pieces and a great staff discount. We are
only focused on the independents because
they are the only ones who can truly service
the customer even after the sale.”
Retailers also receive help with merchandising
through a complete kit with their
Circle #113
first order. The kit includes logo risers
(to display the cookware), feature flyers,
and high quality brochures. Ro adds,
“Fissler reps do offer extensive training
with demonstrations, and they will also do
cooking events in the stores. Monthly
newsletters include new unique recipes,
display tips, and useful selling and/or
product information.”
Ro hits on a major concern for buyers:
space. “Not only does a full line mean that
you usually have to swap another line
out for display space, but it also means
Chicago Metallic’s
The new Lift & Serve Single Squares pan
part of the trend in restaurants offering
bite-size desserts, echoing consumer
interest in portion control and
removable bottom disk that lets you lift
out the beautifully baked item without
disturbing the sides.
additional stock in the warehouse. That’s
why we do not promote full lines, but
pieces. And we also show the buyers that
you can have an effective Fissler vignette in
just a 4 foot space.” Ro wants the retailers
to know that, “We really support them. We
make sure that they sell out and that their
customers are happy.”
When asked about trends in cookware, Ro
zeroes in on saving energy. Ro notes,
“Consumers already base many of their
major housewares and appliance purchases
on Energy-Star and low-energy consumption.
It only makes sense that they save
additional energy while cooking. This
concept has only been focused on appliances
such as the stoves, but it does translate well
into the cookware itself.”
Add the US consumer’s desire for saving
time, and you have the perfect market for
the resurgence of the pressure cooker, one
of Fissler’s premier products. “Pressure
cooking has never gone out of style in
Europe or Asia,” notes Ro. “I personally find
it baffling that many US consumers still
bring up their grandmother’s ‘exploding’
pressure cooker from the 1950’s. The
Titanic sank, but people aren’t afraid to go
on cruises nor do they bring up the Titanic
every time a boat is mentioned. We’re in
2008, and pressure cooking has had over 50
years to advance, improve, and become
absolutely safe. Fissler was one of the
companies who pioneered pressure cooking
into what it is today. The new Pressure
Pan is actually an old concept developed by
Fissler in 1969 when they invented the
first pressure skillet. We found that
consumers are looking for multi-functional
and versatile cookware.”
Ro added, “We all have a lack of storage
space in the kitchen and don’t want to
spend hundreds of dollars buying several
different pieces. The pressure pan combines
a deep sauté pan, our best-selling grill pan,
steamer, fryer, and pressure cooker into one
to make it the ultimate cookware piece.
Pressure cooking will gain some more popularity
as the issue of energy-conservation
continues. However, the vendors really need
to take part in educating the public on the
safety and benefits.” Fissler did their part in
demonstrating safety and ease-of-use at the
2008 International Home + Housewares
Show. They used kid chefs in their booth.
Fissler USA also has a product that
addresses another major US market
concern, low fat cooking. The patented
Novogrill texture was introduced in the
1950’s and has been a popular feature of
Fissler frying pans in Europe and Asia.
Because of the 100% flat base and the
bumpy texture, Ro explains, the oil stays put
where you apply it rather than pooling to
one side or the other, allowing you to use
less oil in cooking.
What’s next for Fissler USA? They will
limit the number of new products for 2008
and concentrate on supporting the independent
dealers to sell their product. “We
have increased our PR and marketing efforts
especially for the holiday season,” says Ro.
One new program is the introduction of a
frying pan gift set which will include their
best-selling Steelux frying pan, a nonstick
frying pan, a Clippix spatter shield, and a
turner. The MSRP value of this set it $477
(MAP is over $370), but it will be sold at a
promotional price of $299.
Ro sees the US consumer becoming more
and more educated regarding purchases
because they are more cautious in today’s
economy. But Ro believes, “Quality and
investment are becoming bigger issues.”
That sounds like a winning set of criteria
for this “new” company.
DYDACOMP PRODUCTS
Dydacomp Development Corporation’s Mail Order Manager
Software Solutions for Direct Marketing and Web Commerce
The National Retail Federation estimates that one-fifth of all U.S. retail sales are holiday sales
and last year was no exception. So whether your business is kitchenware, housewares, tabletop
or food and beverage, these four tips from Dydacomp, developer of Mail Order Manager
(M.O.M.) and SiteLINK solutions will help you have your most successful holiday season yet!
Begin Discount and Incentive Programs Early
According to survey research, one in five shoppers said they would begin holiday shopping
early in the season. Nearly 35% indicate that they would start shopping by Halloween. In
response, many retailers will begin their first wave of promotions and incentives by November.
Offers of cash discounts, conditional free shipping, or a free gift are popular incentives.
Mail to Carefully Segmented, Clean Lists
Catalogs remain a great source of holiday revenues for retailers. However, with rising postage
rates, your ROI depends upon your ability to manage house lists and target those most likely
to purchase. Create lists based on demographic information, last purchase date or source
key to make the most of your each postage dollar. Once you have chosen your target audience,
run your list against the most recent USPS address database to cut down on carrier
imposed correction charges and catalog waste incurred from bad addresses.
Make Returns Easy
By making your return policy clear, simple and easily accessible to the online shopper you will
not only encourage them to purchase from your online store, but positively impact future sales.
Behind the scenes, ensure efficient returns processing by making sure your entire warehouse
and customer service teams are familiar with internal return procedures including entering
them in your order management system and processing refunds or issuing credits.
Be Prepared for Late Shoppers
Know and clearly post the carrier’s deadlines to get gifts to your customer’s doorstep by
Christmas Day. Similarly, be sure that inventory counts and availability are updated at all times.
HEARTLAND BAKEWARE
Heartland Bakeware is introducing an all new concept in insulated
bakeware with the new AireGourmet Convertible Cake Pan with locking
cover. The double layer pan separates after baking and the outer
layer flips to also become the cover. Since it separates for cleaning, there
is no danger of trapping water between the two pan layers.
The unbreakable cover locks in place at both ends of the pan. The high
dome cover allows room for candles and decorations. The lock & take
feature is ideal for transporting. It has a lifetime warranty and is made in
the USA.
Another important feature is the anodized interior. The anodized FoodSafe
surface will not interact with food, and there is no aluminum residue that
comes off. No nonstick coating is used.
“The consumer will be amazed by the quality of cake they get in an
insulated pan. It rises higher and is more moist,” said David Bois,
Heartland Bakeware co-owner. “And the high cover that lasts a lifetime
is something the consumer will love. No more broken plastic covers to
worry about. We've combined all the best features in performance and
longevity in one unique pan.”
The patent pending AireGourmet Convertible Cake Pan is available this fall.
