SportSpecial education students performedpublicly at the combined schools’concert, dancing to “Fireworks”.The school supports students to develop to theirfullest capacity in sport, with great success. There were many outstanding 2011sporting performances, resulting in: 5zone age champions, 16 Hunter regionrepresentatives from 7 sports, and nearlyhalf the student body representing ourschool in teams. At the zone carnival, 50 studentsrepresented <strong>Maitland</strong> <strong>High</strong> in athletics,with 35 students successfully proceedingto the regional athletics carnival, andseven athletes selected to proceed to thestate Combined <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>s (CHS)athletics carnival. The junior boys’ basketball team,coached by D Mauro and managed by MWinter, travelled to Bendigo to competein the Australian <strong>School</strong>s Championships.The boys won the silver medal afterlosing to Wedderburn College 48 to 29.In swimming, MHS competed against fiveother schools at the zone carnival, withmany fine achievements. Three students(Isabelle Sansom, Connor Watt, and BlakeFranks), as well as our 15 Years Girls’relay team, qualified for the regionalcarnival with strong performances.In team events, more than 23 MHS teamsentered into the state knock‐outcompetitions. Notable results includedthe boys’ table tennis (CHS final sixteen instate, and regional finalists for the thirdsuccessive year); the open boys’basketball (CHS final sixteen in state);Under 14 Rugby League boys’ team(regional semi‐finalists in Buckley Shield);and the girls’ netball team (regionalquarter‐finalists).Outstanding results were achieved inRugby League with MHS retaining theprestigious Coalfield Cup. Thiscompetition is held over 4 age groups.The under 13’s and 14’s again remainedundefeated.At the zone cross country carnival, MHSfinished second overall. 30 studentscompeted, with three zone agechampions, including Matthew Gabriel(for the fourth time).Outstanding individual sports performersof 2011 included: Alana Bellamy (HunterRegion basketball and netballrepresentative), Brett Sara(Hunter Regionrugby league); Shae Ross (regional touchrepresentative); Nicholas Gulliver (Hunterregion golf team which finished equalthird in NSW); and Hayden Gullivertogether with Charlie Baxter (their twoperson team finished second in the JackNewton state golf team championships).<strong>School</strong> contextStudent informationIt is a requirement that the reporting ofinformation for all students must be consistentwith privacy and personal information policies.Student enrolment profileThe graph following reflects enrolment figures atthe mid‐year census point, compiled after somepost‐compulsory students typically exit to take upemployment.At the start of 2011 the school enrolment was817 students (58 Aboriginal students and 24students from a language background other thanEnglish).3
