WELCOMEWelcome to the 41 st edition of the annual Spring Desert 100 weekend. This event is being staged on the Wes King Ranchnear Odessa, Washington. This is a working cattle ranch and as such, we must do our best to have as little impact aspossible on this property. This is private property leased for the weekend from Wes King, owner of the ranch, to beused only for the weekend of April 9th and 10th. Only those signed up for an event may travel the grounds outside of the campingarea. This property is not open for general play riding at any time.We all know how hard it is to find an area suitable for an event like the Desert 100. Please respect the wishes of the Stumpjumpersand Mr. King in regards to the property, so in future years we may have the possibility of continued use. Please stay on themarked course at all times. We would like to have as little impact on the land as possible. You may have questioned the Event Flyer in regards to bringing a clean motorcycle to the event. The reason is to mitigate the possibilityof introducing unwanted weeds onto the property. I might point out that in Nevada a clean vehicle, whether bike or truck, isrequired because the BLM does not want plant seeds brought up from Arizona, California or Mexico introduced into their desert. As always, campfires are not allowed. Please clean up your camp and PIT area before leaving. The Stumpjumpers want you to have an enjoyable weekend, but please remember that we are guests here. Treat this property likeit was your own front yard. You do not have to mow it, but leave it as you found it. Thank you and have a great time.LAND OWNERSWes KingLoretta WeberGary SchoesslerNorman OttRACE CHAIRMANDon LarsonRACE CO-CHAIRMANPete WisnerThe Race Chairman, Don Larson and Race Co-Chairman, Pete Wisner would liketo acknowledge all of the hard work and time invested by the SJMC Members. WHO ARE THESTUMPJUMPERS?We are a family oriented, off-road trail riding motorcycle club that loves to have fun.Promoting motorcycling and the safe use of motorcycles is one of our main goals. We were founded in 1967 and have one of the biggest driving forces in off road motorcycleevents, in the Puget Sound area. We promote many of the most well known off road motorcycleevents that enthusiasts look forward to each year. With the main purpose of the clubto have fun, we also have club play days on a monthly basis. Each month one or more ofour members put together an event exclusively for club members and friends. With fun inmind, these events range from trail rides, poker runs, camp outs, and occasionally a nicerelaxing barbecue.Club Sponsored EventsThe World Famous Desert 100 - Since 1970 when this annual race began, the Desert 100,once known as Mattawa, has been the most prestigious off road race of the year. In additonto the race, the Desert 100 weekend features the following events:Family Poker Run - This is a fun event for the whole family and each year it gathershundreds of riders just looking to have a fun ride and great time.Iron Man Poker Run - This is not for the faint at heart. Designed for the more advancedrider, this event is much longer and harder than our family poker run.Dual Sport Ride - We also put on a very fun ride for those who have dual sport bikes.People always look forward to these events knowing they are in for a fun day.Frost Bite Cross-Country Grand Prix - The White Knuckle of 2004 had such good feedbackthat the Frost Bite was created to please the appetite of those who loved the WhiteKnuckle.Golden Spike Hare Scrambles - This is one of the most well known Hare Scrambles in thestate. This event attracts some serious racers but most just come to have a very fun time.White Knuckle Cross-Country Grand Prix - Another well known race that features some“character”.Our Three Main Points are: HAVE FUN! HAVE FUN! HAVE FUN!Monthly Club MeetingsEven though our monthly meetings are restricted to adults only, it is a great way to gettogether and enjoy what every one of our members has to offer. This is where we plan andorganize our club events, but we also have a lot of fun in doing so.When do we meet?We meet on the first Wednesday of every month at 8:00 PM.Where do we meet?At the American Legion Hall in Mountlake Terrace. 22909 - 59th Avenue West. Are Visitors Welcome?Absolutely. If you are thinking of getting involved, please come to any of our meetings.COME JOIN THE CLUBIf you are thinking of looking into a fun and friendly off road motorcycle club then you oweit to yourself to come and check us out. Every member of the Stumpjumpers MotorcycleClub are members for one reason, and that is to have fun. Monthly meetings are for adultonly, however the monthly play days are for our families and friends of all ages. At themeetings, we plan activities for the whole family. Is this Heaven?By Norm BergsmaThe holidays are over. The days are short and thenights are long. It is cold outside and there is a footof snow on the ground. Everything on TV sucks and Ithink I am getting a cold.Saturday morning I set out to fix the gutter that hadfilled with ice pulling it away from the building. Myfoot slipped on the frozen ladder and I stepped off twofeet from the ground. Being the athlete that I am I triedto save the fall by hopping one legged across the driveway.I would havemade it if I hadn’ttripped on thecord to my batterytender and whackedmy shin on thefoot peg of mybike. I grabbed fora shelf to stop myfall and pulled it offthe wall. Landingwith thud on theconcrete floor, theshelf came downand smacked me onthe head. A coldpuddle was formingunder my buttand my Levi’s were soaked with something. I was seeingstars but I was smelling paint thinner. A large goose eggwas forming on my head and my shin was on fire! Thiswas shaping up to be one of those Saturdays.Once the throbbing eased a bit, I gingerly lifted thecuff of my jeans to see if I was bleeding. No blood.Things are looking up. It was there, sitting on a coldconcrete floor, eye level with the label on the side of myPro Circuit, tunable, four stroke spark arrester, that it firsthit me. Mattawa! I spoke the word out loud. Like aray of light in a darkened world the word brought hope.Spring is near. Mattawa is coming again! The name transported me back in time to the springof 1970. I had just returned home from a year in VietNam and had a thirty day leave. I tried hooking up withmy old friends but they had all scattered. Between thedraft, going off to college and having to work for a living, they had moved on with life. I guess the “sixties”were over.My buddy Dean and his wife Jo had taken up ridingdirt bikes while I was away. He invited my wifeKathy and I to spend the weekend in Mattawa with himand his bike club. We had never heard of the place andhad no idea what a “Stumpjumper” was but agreed togo. Mattawa was a small farming community in easternWashington. It was surrounded by sand dunes tothe west, the Saddle Mountains to the north, and desertevery where else.Which, as it turnedout, was the wholepoint!RV’s, vans, and pickups fromall over the stateconverged on thesmall town andeverybody had adirt bike. A strangenew world openedto me that weekend.A world fullof mud, blood andbeer. The smell ofpre-mix in the airand the sound oftwo stroke engines. Could this be heaven?1970 - Monty Bergsma (left), Dean Lampe (right), Yamaha DT-1 (middle).Dean’s wife Jo let me ride her Hodaka 100 “SuperRat”. It was too small, too loud and had the worst suspensionever but after a couple hours in the sand dunesI was hooked. After three days of riding in the desert Iwas dirty, tired and sore everywhere, but all I could thinkabout on the drive home was getting my first bike.I found a red 1970 Yamaha DT1. It was slightly usedbut what a sweet ride. We removed the headlights, taillights, turn signals, mirrors and anything else that wasn’tFLATOUT • APRIL 9TH & 10TH, 2011 16

are going to the Desert 100 andit is still the biggest event of theyear.1995 - My Son’s school bus and our home that year in Vantage.necessary. After adding a fork brace, front fender mudflap, number plate and a new set of knobby tires, it wasready for the dirt. An open faced helmet with a duckbill visor, logging boots that laced all way to the kneeand some leather gloves and I was ready too.The following weekend I went to my first “pokerrun” and was introduced to Rieters Pit. No place onthe planet has as many rocks, roots and ruts, but man, this was really living! Who would believe cold rain, fragrantmuck and absolute misery could be so much fun.It wasn’t long before I understood what stump jumpingwas all about. Soon I was one of the dedicated nutswho did this every weekend. Before I knew it a year ofweekends had passed and it was time again for the Mattawa100.Over the years the race moved further and furtherout of town and eventually became the Desert 100. Wethen raced out of Vantage for several years, and now outsidethe town of Odessa. No matter where its held, orwhat it is called, it is still the big event of the year for us.We make the pilgrimage every spring to kick off a newseason of riding. That first year my son was 6 months old. At five hegot his first bike. He turned 41 this year and still lovesthe dirt. I now have three grown sons, and a growndaughter. All of them grew up camping and riding dirtbikes every weekend. My lovely wife has cared for usfor 42 years. Some of their best memories growing upSuddenly I realize I havea ton stuff to do. The gutterscan wait. I have to start gettingready for this years race. It’s timeto drag the bike out of the cornerof the garage and start doingsome maintenance. I need tofind my riding boots. The motorhome needs cleaning. Gotto call all the kids to see whocan come this year. I have a newgranddaughter who I think isjust going to love it.My heart felt thanks to the Stumpjumpers for faithfullystaging this event every year. It meant a lot to methat first year and has become part my families heritage.Everybody in the family has stories to tell. I will notbore you with mine, although I have some great ones. The best ones I save for myself. When I have troublefalling asleep at night I play them back in my memories.I can see myself streaking down that long straightawayon the Saddle Mountain ridgeline, a cloud of dust risingbehind me… That was as fast as I had ever been in mylife and it still puckers my butt just thinking about it. Iloved sliding out of control down Habacks Hill andwondering if I would ever stop. Soaring off the winddrifts at Beverly Dunes. I spent one weekend in jail forbad behavior and found Jesus there. And best of all wasthe year I got the holeshot. What sweet moment! I wassoon swallowed up in a sea of sagebrush and angry twostrokes, but the moment will last forever. Did I mentionthe year I won the free trip to Hawaii? That was cool! Ihave a lifetime of good stuff!I have got to say Thank you to the Stumpjumpers, past and present, for all the great memories. If I neverrode again I could die happy because it has been a greatrun. And I can’t say for sure, but I am thinking maybe,we will find there are Hodaka’s in Heaven.Norm “Monty” BergsmaSTUMPJUMPERS MC | DESERT 100 | APRIL 9TH & 10TH 2011

A Legend Lo s tmaintaining trails in places we all ride and race includingWalker Valley, Reiter Trails and others. Herode thousands of miles of trails with a pack full oftools, chainsaw and his favorite pulaski on his back.If you’ve ever been on one of his trails you mightbegin to understand where the terms “Weber trail”and “Weber ride” come from. Scott built some of thenastiest, tightest, most technical trails we ride (or tryto ride).Scott Weber 1959-2010On May 19th 2010 the off-road motorcycling world lost a legendand a hero, Scott Weber. Scott probably spent more time on two wheelsthan he did on two feet! His world revolved around every aspect of offroadmotorcycling. From riding and racing to trail work to being a tirelessadvocate attending DNR meetings and getting out the message about eventsand issues revolving around his sport. Scott was a friend to all of us. He wasalways willing to help others. He would skip a ride to help someone workon a bike that wouldn’t start. He worked thousands of hours building andThe only thing greater than his zeal forbuilding technical trails was his skill at riding andracing on them. Scott was a force to be reckonedwith in the off-road racing world. He placed firstin literally hundreds of races and won multiplechampionships during his lifetime. He had so manytrophies, boxes full, that he began donating them tokid’s races and other events. He was once called “theguy on the ratty looking bike that could kick yourbutt in the woods at will”, and that was a fact!Scott was a long time member of the Stumpjumpersand Skagit Motorcycle Clubs. He will be missed notonly by his friends and family but also by all thoseriders he benefitted through his many tireless hoursof work on the trails.Chuck CubineFLATOUT • APRIL 9TH & 10TH, 2011 20

DoRacers’HaveMoreFun?range from 65 to 72 degrees with zero chance for precipitation. They struggle to buckle their immaculate boots withstomachs full of restaurant sausage and pancakes. After anhour of warming bikes in the parking area (mentally rehearsingone down four up), they head off into the trails for a couplemiles. When they return for nourishment each intensemoment is recounted like a tall tale in its infancy. They willsuck down Powerade until it is time put the helmet back onfor another epic 6 miles, frequently stopping to alleviate theslightest annoyance.Racer Dedication: You may never see them. They tend toarrive early and quickly head out. It may be in the teens ora triple digit temperature, it doesn’t matter. Sure they likethe fair weather, but they can’t let little things like hypothermiaor heat stroke stop them from their progression. Whilein a race they can consume 3 tablespoons of roost andwon’t let it affect their lap time.Casual Friendship: There are few things more bonding thansharing a pleasant ride with your pals; whether it be gazingat an amazing view of some mountain vista or working as ateam to conquer a trail-side mechanical issue. Those are thetimes that will cement your affinity toward each other for alifetime.Racing Friendship: That best pal of yours off the track mayalso be the best piece of traction during a race. Just becauseyou carpooled to the event with someone doesn’t mean thatthe same person won’t drag their foot into dusty turns tocloud your vision. He may have been the best man at yourwedding but he won’t hesitate to put you into the trees androost you while you curl into the fetal position.Dirt bikes are fun machines and can dish out joy as long asyou are conditioned to receive. Everyone starts out as a casualrider seeking pleasure by finding top gear in the desert, hoppingalong dirt lumps on a motocross track or slithering througha forest of evergreens. But once the element of competition isadded, some riders are quickly turned off. Fundamental differencesseparate the casual rider and avid racer. The followingis a breakdown of the equipment and some of the personalitytraits that each group enjoys.Casual Competitiveness: Every leisure rider gets a wild hairand will twist the throttle back a notch to outdo a buddy. Themoments may be brief but it is a small dose of what it is like tocompete in a race.Casual Determination: The casual rider may want to getbetter or may be content with the level that they have alreadyachieved. The point of riding is to have a good timeand if that effort has crossed into the territory of exertion,it’s time to back it down a notch.Racer Determination: The commitment to get better isrelentless in the racer who frequents exertion territory. Setbacksin the form of injury or failure to achieve their goalsonly seems to galvanize their resolve. Weaknesses are assessedand methods for improvement are attempted untilresults are met.Racer Competitiveness: Competitionis what drives the progressionof the sport and defines the limits ofhuman ability. In the heat of battlethe victory often goes to the riderwho wants it more and is willing tosacrifice their body and machine toachieve the next highest ranking.Casual Dedication: You’ve seenthem before. They flock to theriding areas when temperatures

Casual Training: This may include an assortment of unconventionalexercise practices and dieting. From the 5 reps of nightlycouch crunches where the burn was felt while searching forthe illusive remote control to the accumulation of 3 flights ofstairs tallied while at home and work in one day. The minimalamount of body movement to keep atrophy from taking overcan keep a casual rider from sucking wind for 14 seconds ofdifficult riding. Taste is the cornerstone of the casual diet. Nutritiontakes the back burner during a daily consumption ofnotorious name brands. Nabisco products for carbs and fiber,Carl’s Jr. for protein, Mt. Dew for hydration and Lucky Charmsto help fill any of the vitamin gaps that may be leftover.Racer Training: Methods will vary, but they all involve a sadisticroutine specifically coordinated to condition the body tothe standard cardio and anaerobic work needed to maintainmaximum control of their motorcycle for an extended periodof time. Commitment to a pure diet stripped of caloric sinmay not be common practice, but guilt will be felt for eachgluttonous bite.Casual Bike Setup and Maintenance: The broad spectrum ofcasual rider personalities becomes most clear in this area. Thelevel of commitment to bike setup and readiness can varyfrom decked out rides finely tuned and detailed to completelystock. Stock to the point that whatever came from the factorystill sits on the bike including suspension settings, gear ratios, bearing grease, chain lube, tires, filters, engine oil and eventhe air inside the tubes. From the time they arrive at a ridingarea the casual dirt bike may be ready for 500 miles or a catastrophicfailure.Racer Pain Tolerance: It could be adrenaline, extreme focus or genetic, but to race at all meansdealing with a certain level of pain. Seats spank, gear chafes, muscles burn and hands sting evenwhen you aren’t crashing. Every racer feels it,but not everyone can cope.Casual Perseverance: Retreat is not a defeatwhen you are not playing. It could be too hot,too cold, too wet, too dusty, too steep, too rockyor too muddy. When the going gets tough thecasual rider finds an easier way around.Racer Perseverance: Fogging goggles, frozen fingers, burning muscles and a ruptured Camelbackwon’t stop a racer. Sure they will have to lookthrough the 1/2 inch square of clear plastic playingpeekaboo over their eyes and get used to thestream of water draining down their butt crack;however, they may take comfort in knowing thatif they can exhale hard enough and at the correctdownward angle that fog may disappear and inno time that Camelback’s bladder will be completelyempty.Casual Focus: What is more annoying than anundone velcro glove strap? An unbuckled bootRace Bike Setup and Maintenance: Most race machines arewell cared for. That complicated piece of metal and plasticbetween your knees can make or break your day dependingon how it’s set up and maintained. Still, procrastination existsat this level and is painfully obvious 20 minutes before a heatstarts. No one wants to be the guy bumming brake pads fromstrangers or trying to bump start their bike when they shouldbe on the line listening to the riders meeting.Casual Strategy: Having fun is top on the list for the casualrider. Not getting hurt, stranded or lost are also listed high inthe rankings. Did I pack enough Snickers and Doritos to lastall day? Will that ham sandwich still be good when I get backto my truck? These are the tactics that cross the casual mind.Racer Strategy: This may begin a few days before the racewith hydrating and carb loading. While on the track it is aboutfun, but it may not be top priority. Conserving energy, properline choice, when to pit, where to preset suspension, what tirepressure to run (if tubes are involved) and where your competitorsare, are all factors racers must consider.Casual Pain Tolerance: A dirt bike is like a carnival ride thatyou control. The second there is any discomfort the casualrider can stop and pop an Advil or go home.FLATOUT • APRIL 9TH & 10TH, 2011 24

MATTAWA MEMORIESBy Duane and Edith RiceWe started riding the Desert 100 many yearsago. The first race we went to was in 1969. We didn’thave a camper of any sort so we shared a room at theinfamous Mattawa motel. Each couple shared a twinbed, which made us laugh all night.Duane raced that year and survived, which was thegoal. The next year I was pregnant. We had a pickup witha canopy. We made a makeshift bed in it after we unloadedthe motorcycle. Everything else went outside. We came back from the rider’s meeting before the raceand our cooler, containing all our food and drinksfor the weekend, had been stolen. Thank heaven forfriends who helped us out.Again Duane raced and finished. In 1972 we went to Mattawa and both Duaneand I raced. They added a Powder Puff class that year. There were very few women who rode that first year.It was a good year since we both survived and receivedtrophies. I don’t like beer but when I finished I receiveda trophy in one hand and an ice cold beer in the other.1972 - Both of us raced andtrophied that year.I drank the entire bottle right there. I haven’t hada beer since. We progressed from the canopy of ourtruck, to a folding camping trailer. I’ll never forgetthe one year when we arrived it was very windy.Everyone just sat and watched, and laughed attimes, as we tried to put it up in the wind. It hadlots of sand and dust in it by the time we got done.Next we had a tag along trailer, and finally gota motorhome. We took that motorhome to a lotof desert races and off road places we probablyshouldn’t have.Over the years we went to many of theStumpjumper races. I only raced a few races butDuane rode many of them, sometimes trophied, sometimes not, until with advancing age we decidedto start riding just the poker runs. We don’thave much luck at poker so we usually didn’t doany good at that, but always had a good ride.1983 - Duane and son, Rob Rice. Now our son Rob carries on the familytradition of motorcycle racing. We still ride dualsports but don’t ride any competitive rides. We justride for fun.We have many happy memories ofgoing to Mattawa over the years. We had lots of riding and met manygood people.FLATOUT • APRIL 9TH & 10TH, 2011 28

To the man that said “We could do that”……Thank You!Dutch Binckley, 1929 – 2010Desert 100 Race Chairman, 1970 – 1973From the thought of - “we could put on a race ourselves”, (after one of the 2 M/C clubsthat put on early desert races had stopped), a trip for welding on a broken motorcycle tothe town of Mattawa ended with the introduction between Dutch and local residents Pauland Bonnie Parker. They formed a friendship and an alliance that produced the first annualMattawa 100 in April of 1970. The early partnership between the town of Mattawaand the Stumpjumpers MC included the construction of a park in town and the purchaseof an ambulance. That first race would not have been possible without the partnership between the town ofMattawa and the man that thought, “We could do that”.For all of us that have come behind you and for all of us that have taken great joy in participatingin this annual event, bringing families and friends together for something thatcan’t be found anywhere else. … Thank You!R.I.P. Dutch…..STUMPJUMPERS MC | DESERT 100 | APRIL 9TH & 10TH 2011

PerseveranceandPassionStan TolandKennewick, WA1941 – 2009Stan Toland raced dirt bikes for more than20 years. He was passionate about the sport and theDesert 100. He wouldn’t miss the race even thoughhe was fighting colon cancer.Stan raced the Over 60 class at the Desert100 for five years. He was undergoing chemotherapyfor 3 of those years. Every year Stan raced he won hisclass. Stan’s doctors didn’t know what to think of him. When he raced in 2008 he should have been havinghis chemotherapy treatment that weekend. Stan said,“I told my doctor no. I’m racing this weekend.”Stan felt most alive when he was on his motorcycles, racing or not. When he was in his early 20s hisbrother-in-law got him hooked on motorcycles and hehas been riding since the mid-1960’s. Because he lovedthe sport so much he got his daughters into the sport. One of his daughters, Tia Flynn, has raced the Desert100 for many years. She credits her Dad for getting herinto this sport that she shares with her husband andson. Tia said, “When I was 10 my Dad bought me abike.” Tia has loved the sport ever since.A close friend of Stan’s was Jerry Siegfried.Jerry passed away during the 2007 race of a heart attack.Stan said, “I rode past him as he was being givenCPR and didn’t even know it was him.” Although thisaffected Stan deeply he continued to race because heknew his friend would want him to.Stan supported anyone who wanted to ride/race a dirt bike. Whether you had a flat tire, youneeded clean goggles, gas, etc., Stan would be the firstone to help. Every year during the 25 Hour StarvationRidge race in Goldendale, WA, Stan was in chargeof the pits for the all women Shred Bettys team. Hestayed up the entire race to help with whatever theteam needed. The last bike Stan rode was a KTM 450EXC.He loved to ride at Juniper Forest at least every otherweekend regardless of his cancer treatment. Stan said,“I take chemo every two weeks and I’m sick for four orfive days but I will keep doing this. Being active worksfor me. Why stay home and feel sorry for myself ?”Nothing could stop Stan Toland. The lesson weshould all learn from this incredible man’s life is perseverance. He knew his passion and he followed it. He isan inspiration to anyone who rides or races a dirt bike.Racing the Desert 100 one year, Stan brokea port in his chest where they put the chemo in andcrushed it in. The doctors had to move it to the otherside of his chest. His wife, Sherrie, wasn’t real happyabout it. Stan admitted, “My wife really gets tickedwhen I ride.”FLATOUT • APRIL 9TH & 10TH, 2011 34

APPROACHING A DOWNED RIDER BY DR. TARLOWCOURTESY REPRINT GRANTED BY DIRT RIDER MAGAZINETrackside medicine is intended to provide a general medical guideline and is not intended to replace the clinicaljudgment of a doctor or take the place of a medical doctor’s diagnostic or treatment recommendations. We will always err onthe conservative side for safety purposes.MOTOCROSS. I’ve been involved in just about every sport, and unfortunately, motocross ranks high as an injury-ridden sport. Onany given day, you can see someone sprawled out on the track like a cheap yard sale. Stopping trackside and providing medical assistanceto a downed rider is what any responsible rider would do. When I’ve taken a dirt sample, it’s nice to know that some guy cares enough tostop and check on me, even if it is just to tell me to get up and stop blocking the track. It would be great to be able to teach you advanced trauma life support or CPR protocol from trackside medicine, but with mywriting skills and your limited reading time, it isn’t going tohappen in this article. The real truth is we all should knowCPR. Nothing can compare with the feeling of helping tosave someone’s life. CPR online courses such as, www.firstaidweb.com can certify you for free and in less time thanit takes to put on a new set of tires, with far less sweat andprofanity. For the purpose of this article, we will assume thatthe downed rider is conscious, possibly alert, oriented andbreathing. So what should we do when stopping to help adowned rider?First, always remember that you should never move therider until his condition has been sufficiently assessed andalways send for medical backup. We can all attest thatafter hitting the ground we are not always aware of oursurroundings or all our injuries. Pain from one injury (brokenwrist or ankle) can mask the severity of other more importantinjuries (spinal cord compromise). We must always assessother potentially serious injuries before focusing on theobvious or less serious injuries. Head, neck, back and chestinjuries (breathing difficulty) are the first to evaluate once you have determined that CPR is not required. If the rider isn’t alert, determine whether he is having difficulty breathing. If he is, implement CPR training. If the rider is alert, ask him if he is having anyproblems breathing. If not, obtain the rider’s full name and whom he’s with; makesure to remember this information in case he passes out. Determine if he isalert and oriented to the time, place and situation. If he is disoriented, assume aworst- case scenario and that he has a head injury and may be unaware of thefull extent of his injuries. Ask where his pain is. Less critical, but painful, injuriesmay distract from potentially serious injuries to the head, back or neck. Ask if heis experiencing any numbness or tingling of the arms and legs (reflects a potentialspinal cord injury). If yes, assume neck or back injury and minimize any movementand get an EMT. If there is no numbness or tingling of the extremities, you canrule out a neck or back injury by lightly feeling over the entire spine from the neckto the lowest part of the back for any tenderness. If any tenderness is present, then assume possible fracture and get an EMT. If there is no tenderness over theentire spine and no numbness or tingling of the arms or legs, then it is probablysafe to focus on obvious injuries.Evaluate the rider’s body systematically from head to toe. You havealready ruled out breathing difficulty, cervical spine and back injury and levelof consciousness. Now, evaluate quickly for any major lacerations and applypressure if the rider is bleeding (this may include a protruding bone fracture).Next, assess chest wall tenderness for rib fractures along with abdominal painfrom blunt trauma such as smashing in to a handlebar. Abdominal pain may bethe result of a liver or spleen laceration, which is potentially life-threatening. Don’twrite it off when a rider complains of abdominal pain. At this point, the rider isstable, and we can focus on major joints such as shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles for any fractures.Remember, triage involves evaluating the possibly life-threatening andmost serious injuries first. Triage of the downed rider must be done quickly andefficiently. Don’t focus all your attention on the obvious minor injury (it’s the injuriesyou can’t see that can kill you)—be systematic.FIVE THINGS TO REMEMBER1. CPR: (airway, breathing, circulation): They say breathing isimportant.2. BRAIN FUNCTION: Helpsdetermine level of crisis and if thepatient can provide any help withdiagnosis.3. SPINAL CORD: Potentiallydevastating injury, don’t make a badsituation worse by moving the rider.4. BLUNT TRAUMA: Internal injuries, mild to moderate abdominal pain canbe a life-threatening sign.5. FRACTURES: If it looks funny, it’sprobably broken; if the bone is stickingout, it’s a no-brainer.STUMPJUMPERS MC | DESERT 100 | APRIL 9TH & 10TH 2011
