The Discovery of

Longitude

By Joan Marie Galat

Illustrated by Wes Lowe

Scientific discovery changes the world!

New Releases

Discover the fascinating story behind one

of the most important changes to nautical

navigation in this nonfiction book for

young readers. More than 300 years

ago, explorers wandered the seas using

unreliable maps. What they needed to

know was the longitude of their locations,

but for that they needed accurate time

keeping. Unfortunately, no accurate

source of time measurement at sea existed.

In 1714 the British government decided to

offer a reward to anyone who could solve

the problem. Learned men and great thinkers alike tried

unsuccessfully to work out a solution. They declared it

unsolvable! Carpenter John Harrison was intrigued; he

thought he might have a solution. He worked for years

to design a clock that functioned accurately at sea, even

though no one believed he could do it. Even after his

timepiece was demonstrated effective at sea, he was still

not acknowledged for his ingenious solution. It took

many years and intervention by the king to grant Harrison

the recognition and reward he deserved for solving the

problem of how to accurately track longitude and for

winning the British government prize. The book offers a

detailed map of the world at that time and includes the

advancements in the use of longitude since then.

Award-winning and bestselling author, JOAN

MARIE GALAT has been fascinated by astronomy

and our place in the solar system since childhood.

WES LOWE has illustrated numerous awardwinning

books and is known for his aviation and

marine paintings.

Young Heroes of the

Confederacy

By Debra West Smith

The resilience of the young will move and inspire.

The Civil War is a topic well-known to readers of all

ages. However, it is the bravery and strength of the

young men and women that is often forgotten. Born

into a set of circumstances beyond their control, these

children of the 1860s faced the ultimate test of character

and courage. Stories of courage in the face of starvation

and death, told through biographies of young people

from each of the Confederate states, reveals just what

kind of heroes they were.

DEBRA WEST SMITH is a member of the Society of

Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. She finds inspiration

for her writing from the stories her grandfather

used to tell her about growing up in East Texas.

We as Freemen: Plessy v. Ferguson

By Keith Weldon Medley

Essential reading on segregation now in paperback!

“Medley deftly puts in colorful context the U.S. Supreme

Court’s signal 1896 decision sanctioning so-called

separate but equal facilities. . . . Rich in family and

community history and local lore, Medley’s work details

the world of New Orleans’ free people of color . . . this

remarkable read is recommended.” —Library Journal

In June 1892, a 30-year-old shoemaker named Homer

Plessy bought a first-class railway ticket from his native New

Orleans to Covington, north of Lake Pontchartrain. The

2-hour trip had hardly begun when Plessy was arrested and

removed from the train. Plessy’s act of civil disobedience

was designed to test the constitutionality of the Separate

Car Act, one of the many Jim Crow laws that threatened the

freedoms gained by blacks after the Civil War.

KEITH WELDON MEDLEY has spent much of his

life photographing and writing about New Orleans. He

holds a dual bachelor of arts degree in psychology and

sociology from Southern University.

Ocean Commotion: Caught in

the Currents

By Janeen Mason

29,000 bathtub toys make history.

It was an accident at sea in 1992 that proved the

ocean currents are connected. When a cargo

ship dropped a bathtub-toy-filled container into

the Pacific, the little quackers bobbed along the

globe’s waterways, coming to rest on beaches near

and far. This fictionalized account of the event is

accompanied by maps charting the toys’ travel

pattern, a glossary, and a summary of the highly

publicized event.

JANEEN MASON is the secretary of the Florida Council

on Arts and Culture and a member of the Society of

Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators Florida. Her

accolades include a Lifetime Achievement in the Arts

Award from the Arts Council of Stuart/Martin County.

he’d rather trick Deer into doing the work for both of

them. Once Possum decides to take advantage of his

Where can two 1,500 pound baby elephants hide?

When two baby elephants escaped from the circus

in 1975, it took eighteen days to find them. The

authorities searched all over, but they were always

one step behind this sneaky pair of fugitives. This

colorful picture book follows these giant hideand-seekers

throughout Oklahoma as they evade

capture for as long as they can.

UNA BELLE TOWNSEND is a teacher and

an award-winning author. Her previous work

received the 2004 Oklahoma Book Award and was a

2004 IRA/CBC Children’s Choice Selection.

JANICE HECHTER is an award-winning illustrator

and graphic designer. Her work has earned her a

National Best Book Award and a San Francisco Book

Festival Award.

Dr. Milburn Calhoun, publisher

and president of Pelican Publishing

Company, had a passion for

the written word. Born in West

Monroe, Louisiana, in 1930, Dr.

Calhoun immersed himself in a

hearty education from the very

start. As a graduate of Louisiana

State University School of Medicine

(1955), Dr. Calhoun practiced

family medicine jointly with

publishing until his retirement

from the medical field in 1997. However, his true

passion always rested between the covers of a book.

Rare books were a specialty of Dr. Calhoun’s. He opened

a mail-order company, Bayou Books, which specialized

in Louisiana and Southern titles. In 1967, he saw

his small business burst into the exciting world of

independent bookshops when he opened a storefront

by the same name in Gretna, Louisiana. Three years

later, Dr. Calhoun, along with his wife, Nancy, and brother,

Jim, acquired Pelican Publishing Company in New

Orleans, which changed Dr. Calhoun’s life forever.

By selecting books that other publishers refused to

publish and supplying them to a demanding audience,

Dr. Calhoun saw the company’s sales double each year

during the first ten years. The business expanded into

all fifty states and five continents. Dr. Calhoun’s first

book published was The Real Spiro Agnew: Commonsense

Quotations of a Household Word, to be followed

by such monumental titles as See You at the Top, Cajun

In Memoriam

Night Before Christmas®, and The South Was Right!,

all of which display not only Dr. Calhoun’s aptitude for

business and interpreting the desires of the reader, but

the diverse genres he wished for Pelican to embrace.

He led the trend of compiling editorial cartoons with

the Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year Series, now in

its thirty-ninth year. Dr. Calhoun wanted to develop

authors and help keep in print books that were in high

demand, a tribute to his past in the rare-book industry.

He also wanted to give students an opportunity to

learn about the publishing industry, as well as different

viewpoints that they might not regularly be exposed

to, which he accomplished through his internship

program.

Dr. Calhoun has been declared

by many to be a man for all seasons,

with passions ranging from

literature to history, architecture,

travel, and beyond. Some say that

there was neither a thing he could

not recite nor a fact he could not

recall. A man of faith, Dr. Calhoun was a longtime

member of Oak Park Baptist Church in New Orleans,

where he also served as a deacon.

Pelican remembers Dr. Milburn Calhoun,

a loving husband, father, and employer.

He will be greatly missed.

Dr. Milburn Calhoun
