All Saintsand St Richard’s CEP SchoolGovernors’ Admission Policy1) INTRODUCTIONAll Saintsand St Richard’s is a Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School forchildren aged 4+ to 11. The school is in the village of Old Heathfield, approximately onemile east of the market town of Heathfield in the High Weald.The school was founded in 1863 by Earl de la Warr and the vicar and church wardens ofthe Parish of Heathfield. The original building has been extended and modernised toprovide good accommodation for five classes.Children come into the school from a range of nurseries and playgroups in the Heathfieldarea, the majority of children when they leave the school continue their education atHeathfield Community College.2) ADMISSION AT 4+The Governors have agreed with the Local Authority to admit 20 pupils to Reception Class.The Governing Body has also decided that this will be the maximum number that it will admitto the school due to constraints of space within the building.These arrangements and the admissions criteria, below, are reviewed annually by theadmissions panel of the Governing Body, which then report to the whole Governing Body.When the school receives more applications than there are places available the Governors willadmit pupils according to the oversubscription criteria, which are listed in order of priority.All children who have been offered a place in the Reception Class, and this has been acceptedby the parents, will be admitted in the September of the school year in which the childreaches five years of age. All children have the option to attend full time from September,through negotiation and agreement with parents.3) CASUAL ADMISSIONSIf casual vacancies arise during the school year and there are more applicants than placesThe Admissions Committee will consider all applications against the oversubscription criteria.A decision to refuse admission will be taken by the Committee and no one individual.- 2 -


4) OVERSUBSCRIPTION CRITERIA1. The Admission Authority will give first priority in its oversubscription criteria to allrelevant looked after children.2. Children whose parents are regular worshippers in the parish churches of All SaintsandSt Richard’s, by ministerial reference.3. Children who already have brothers and sisters attending school, at the time the childstarts school.4. Children whose parents are regular worshippers in a neighbouring Anglican parish Churchfor whom this is the nearest Church school, by ministerial reference.5. Children whose parents are regular worshippers of another Christian denomination wholive within the parishes of Heathfield All Saints’ or Heathfield St Richard’s, by ministerialreference.6. Children with documented acute medical or social needs who, in the view of theGovernors, would benefit from a place at the school.7. Children living within the parishes of Heathfield All Saints’ or Heathfield St Richard’s.8. Children of other faiths or no faith who live beyond the parishes of Heathfield All Saints’or Heathfield St Richard’s and whose parents desire them to attend this school becauseof its religious tradition.When deciding between applicants that ostensibly have equal entitlement under the abovecriteria, the Governors will have regard to the proximity of the applicants’ homes to theschool. Priority will be given to applicants who live closest to the school, using surfacedpassable routes. Distance will be measured using the County Council’s geographicalinformation system (GIS), from the child’s home to the gate used by the children at theschool. It must also be a public right of way.5) NOTES• The term ‘relevant looked after children’ refers to children in the care of the LocalAuthority both at the time of application and admission.• Parents applying under categories 2, 4, and 5 must complete a supplementary form(included with the policy and available from the School Office or LA) giving thename of the priest or minister able to verify that the requirements of a particularcriterion have been met.• A regular worshipper is defined as attending worship once a month for at least sixmonths.- 3 -
