APY Thunder makes it four in a row
V OLUME 1, ISSUE 4
It was a close match most of the game but APY Thunder ended up beating the Maralinga
Eagles by 33 points in the 2008 Rio Tinto Indigenous Lands Challenge Cup.
The game was played at AAMI Stadium on Saturday 24 May as part of the Indigenous Round
prior to the Power vs Sydney match.
It was a very fast, free flowing match with many goals kicked and the talent on both sides was
really impressive!
Maralinga got off to a flyer in the match, before APY steadied to a one-point lead by quarter
time. Inaccurate kicking by the Thunder kept Maralinga in the game at halftime.
The third term was brilliant, with APY kicking the first 3 goals to get out to a 5 goal lead. They
looked like they might run away with the match before Maralinga kicked 5 goals in the last ten
minutes to trail by only 2 points at the last change.
The Eagles goaled again from the first bounce of the last term to put themselves in front for the
first time since the first quarter. But as all good teams should, the Thunder rose to the challenge
and kicked the last 6 goals of the game to win by 33 points.
This makes it four out of four for the Thunder and the players celebrated by treating the
spectators with back flips and cartwheels.
The Most Valuable Player award went to
