As a result, the overall winner of the NOVA Open, its Renaissance Man or Best Overall, isdetermined by equal parts Artistic and Competitive Score. Both scores are normalized to a percentage ofpossible, and then added together. The highest score wins Best Overall – Renaissance Man.In addition to Best Overall, the NOVA Open awards several prizes based upon participation in varioussubcomponents of the hobby. The player who wins the highest bracket will be nominated the TournamentChampion (known as Best General in many other events). Players will receive Bracket Champion awardsfor winning each of the other brackets determined at the end of Round 4. Awards and prizes will also begiven to our best tournament artist (army appearance as a whole), with equal value and prestige to theTournament Champion award. Additional top scoring armies in the artistic category will receive prizesand awards. Awards and recognition may be given at random for superior sportsmanship. Players may bedisqualified or removed from the tournament for consistently poor sportsmanship. Sportsmanship will bescored and recorded for both purposes. In terms of prestige, the NOVA Open values its awards (and assigns sponsor-donated prizes accordingly)in the following order:1. Renaissance Man (Best Overall, 50/50 Appearance/Competitive)2. Virtuoso (Best Army Artist)3. Tournament Champion (Winner of the first tournament bracket)4. Battlemaster (Player who scores the highest Battle Points, regardless of Record or Bracket)5. Hobby Ace (The 2 Runners Up for Virtuoso [#2])6. Second to One (Second place in the first tournament bracket)7. Bracket Champions (Winners of all other tournament brackets)The NOVA Open, LLC Page 2The NOVA Open 2013 – August 29 – September 1, 2013

3.0 Overall Mission Guidance3.1 Terrain at the NOVAThe following rules apply to the terrain layout seen in Figure 3.1 below.NOVA Open 2013 40k GT Final Mission PacketJudges are wearing yellow!Fairness / Terrain AbstractionsThe NOVA Open’s application of Terrain Rules may in some cases seem abstract. This is done purely toensure fairness across all tables, and no punishment or advantage to any player as a result of aestheticallypleasing terrain design. Please pay careful attention to the terrain layouts when planning your army – weare not big on surprises at the NOVA! The following guidelines will help explain the terrain layouts inFigures 3.1-1 and 3.1-2 below.• Figure 3.1-1 is the NOVA Open’s standard terrain layout. Figure 3.1-2 is 2013’s new alternate layout. The alternate layout WILL be in play on Day 1 of the NOVA Open on all tables. The standard layoutwill be in play for Days 2 and 3 of the NOVA Open on all tables. The alternate layout is intentionallydesigned to prevent “gaming” the NOVA’s traditional single repeated terrain formation.• There is no Impassable Terrain at the NOVA Open. This may occasionally result in oddities such asLand Raiders on rooftops, and Infantry walking through walls.• Except for items marked as Ruins, no terrain requires vertical measurement / movement distances (i.e.,there is no vertical distance considered when moving up/down the slopes of a hill).• All terrain is AREA, including Hills (Rulebook Page 91). If you go to ground in Area terrain, you maynever obtain better than a 3+ save due to the “+2 for going to ground in Area terrain” as a result. Thismay of course be further improved by special rules and wargear.• Hills additionally follow the rules for Ridgeline / Hill Crests (Rulebook Page 105).• Ruins additionally follow the rules for Ruins/Ruins With Bases (Rulebook Pages 98-101).• Your tables should match these; at least a rhino hull should fit between terrain pieces. If somethinglooks off, contact a judge. Once you begin rolling dice, only the Chief Judge may intervene.Figure 3.1-1.
