SPRING PREVIEWAnother Milestone as GSU Football Holds First Spring PracticeSpring Scrimmage: April 10, 1 p.m., Georgia DomeThe Georgia State football programwill reach another important milestoneas head coach Bill Curry andthe Panthers conduct their first ever springpractice, beginning Tuesday, March 23.“This is as important as anything elsewe’ve done, even recruiting,” said Curryas his squad prepares for the inauguralseason of Georgia State football, kickingoff Sept. 2 versus Shorter at the GeorgiaDome.“You can have right the players, theright coaches, and the right systems, butif you don’t nail down fundamentals inspring practice, then you can’t do it inthe fall because you don’t have time. I’mtalking about footwork, stances, routerunning, reads for the quarterback, alongwith the blocking and tackling.”Spring practice will take place on thenewly installed synthetic turf field at theGSU Football Practice Complex, locatedat 188 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.Weekday sessions are scheduled for 8a.m.The Panthers will hold 15 practices, culminating with another first for the program– Georgia State’s first annual springscrimmage, scheduled for Saturday, April10 at 1 p.m. at the Georgia Dome.“Our most important goal this springis to make sure we have the basics of winningfootball: ball security, field positionand physical domination. If you can dothose three things, you have a very goodchance to win most of time,” said Curry.“We made great progress in the fallwith a group of mostly freshmen,” Currycontinued. “We did a good job in theclassroom with a 2.7 GPA, but we alsopracticed football 60 times.“Then in January and February, weworked indescribably hard at 5:30 a.m.every day to become a physically andmentally tough football team. We found abunch of tough guys who are leaders, andI’m very proud of that.”The spring roster includes approximately71 players. Six members of thePanthers’ 2010 recruiting class areenrolled this semester and will participatein spring drills. In addition to cornerbackJocquez Fears, a transfer from the nowdefunctNortheastern football program, five junior college transfers also joinedthe program: tight end Kalan Jenkins(Navarro College), defensive end EvanBostic (Jones County J.C.), and line-backers Olufemi Opanubi (West L.A.C.C.), Jake Muasau (Phoenix College)and Louie Muasau (Phoenix College).“The impact of the new players hasalready begun to take effect,” said Curry.“They have brought vibrancy and athleticism, also a toughness to our squad thatwe didn’t have. They are good footballplayers and good human beings, and theyare older and more mature than most ofour current players, so that has helped.”Three quarterbacks will get work thisspring, all redshirt freshmen in KeltonHill, a 5-11, 173-pounder from LithiaSprings High School, 6-5, 250-poundDrew Little from Henry County High, and 6-3, 210-pound Bo Schlechter fromWellington, Fla.“Every position is wide open,” saidCurry. “We’ll find out who the starters arein spring practice. We have to line up witha first team, so the guys who have beenhere will be out there first, but everyonehas an opportunity to win a startingposition.”The Panthers will hold spring drills on the newfield at the GSU Football Practice Complex.4 • 2010 Georgia State Football Spring Prospectus
