RelationshipsBy Ronda DegaustInternationallyknownNLPTrainerQ: Dear Ronda,Each year I set a goal to increase myincome and I never seem to obtainit. I heard everyone has a financialthermostat of how much money theywill attract in their life. Is there a wayto raise this thermostat?– Lacking ProsperityA: Dear Lacking Prosperity,The reason for a stationary financialthermostat is connected to your beliefsystem regarding money. We oftenheard comments such as: filthy rich, money is dirty, rich people are not niceetc. These comments, although common, form an internal representationthat money isn’t a good thing. The main belief that holds people backfrom obtaining greater prosperity isself worth. If you don’t believe you areworthy of having more than enoughmoney, you get what you believe. AsHenry Ford so wisely stated; “Whetheryou think you can or you can’t, you areright.”The first step to change your financialthermostat would be to improve yourrelationship with money. Becomecomfortable with the thoughts of havingmoney and change the limiting beliefsthat don’t support you. If you believerich people are not nice, make it agoal to meet a nice rich person. HaveHelp Me,Ronda!a conversation with him or her andlearn about them. You may find out thatpeople, whether rich or poor, can benice or not nice. Money doesn’t makea person good or bad; money is just ameans to an end.Changing your limiting beliefs and yourrelationship with money will raise yourfinancial thermostat and increase yourprosperity.Q: Dear Ronda,My mother has Alzheimer’s diseaseand sometimes when I visit her shedoesn’t remember me. It hurts deep inmy soul when this happens. Am I soinsignificant in her life that she canforget me so easily?– Forgotten DaughterA: Dear Forgotten Daughter,Although I’m not an expert in Alzheimer’sdisease, recently my own motherlost the battled with the disease. In the early stages when my motherstarted to lose her memory, she made acomment that really demonstrated whatwas happening inside her brain. Mymother asked me when she was goingto be 50. Instead of getting upset forsuch a question, I stated her oldest was56 and her baby was 43, so she was 50for a while. She said okay and started totalk about something else.During another visit she was talkingabout going home, but the home shewas referring to was her childhoodhome. She hadn’t lived there for almost60 years, but she was adamant hermother wanted her home. Of courseduring this visit she didn’t rememberme; I wasn’t born in the memory of solong ago.Understand the disease is not a reflectionof your significance in her life, but a deteriorationof the brain which is beyondher control. Finding acceptance and notchallenging the memory loss is the mostloving gift you can give to your motherduring the last stage of her life.“To enjoy your journey to the lifeyou want: Dream It, Determine It,and Make It Happen!”Ronda Degaust is the author of How ToHeal from Years of Criticism, Insults,Abuse & Rejection. healthBy Dr. Donna (ret. D.C.)HealthBy Dr. Brett Gottlieb, D.C.Study ShowsThat AChiropracticAdjustmentCan LowerBlood PressureYes, you heard correctly, a recentstudy published in the Journal ofHypertension showed that a chiropracticadjustment to the upper neckcan lower blood pressure. However, this adjustment to the upper neckwas not the typical neck adjustmentthat most chiropractors administer. The adjustment in this study was onethat only chiropractors trained inthe NUCCA technique can perform.NUCCA stands for National UpperCervical Chiropractic Association. This association is responsible fortraining and certifying chiropractorsin this adjustment technique thatlowers blood pressure. The significant observation of thisstudy was that this chiropracticadjustment not only lowered bloodpressure but also sustained the loweredblood pressure until the studywas concluded which was manymonths into the future. Furthermore, this upper neck adjustment loweredblood pressure as well as any of thebest drugs and combination drugsavailable today but without any ofthe side-effects. Even more incrediblewas that every subject in thestudy responded and only 1 adjustmentwas necessary. In fact, the resultsof this study were so significantthat the top medical researcher in theworld on hypertension has decided tostart a follow-up study to see if thesame results can be duplicated. Many people are taking blood pressuremedication but are sufferingfrom side effects, which severelyupset the quality of their lives. TheNUCCA chiropractic adjustment tothe upper neck could be a safe andeffective alternative to blood pres-sure medications and all the sideeffects associated with these medications.Of course, more studies willneed to be done before your medicaldoctor is going to recommend thisadjustment to the upper neck. Thatdoesn’t mean you can’t try it outright now. This adjustment is effective formany other conditions as well suchas migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and neck andback pain to name just a few. Theadjustment itself is very gentle withno forceful twisting and cracking ofthe neck. It feels like a slight pressureat the contact point located justbelow the ear. For more informationand to see an actual picture of theadjustment being administered to apatient please visit my website atwww.painfreelife.net. If you wouldlike to make an appointment to see ifyou qualify as a good candidate forthis procedure please call my officefor a free consultation and exam. Myoffice number is (916) 965-7155.To Evette Smith, helping peopleimprove their health isn’t just aprofession; it’s a calling. She livesand breathes what she can possiblydo to improve people’s health. It’s that internal motivation thatprompted her to begin taking classesin French medical aromatherapy, not just ordinary classes that anyonecan take, but the learned methodsand practices of aromatherapists inFrance where aromatherapy is part ofmainstream medicine. These classeswere offered only through MasterAromatherapist, Alexandria Brighton.Evette’s certification will soongive her the credentials of a certifiedinternational aromatherapist. What is Aromatherapy?Aromatherapy focuses on utilizingthe essential oils of plants for therapeutichealing. When the highestquality therapeutic grade essentialoils are used topically on the body orconsumed orally, they can affect theenergetics of an organ or body systemby stimulating its renewal andrestoration. However, not all essentialoils can be consumed. Some aretoxic with adulterated additives, andthat’s where a trained aromatherapistreally comes in handy. Your safety inusing these types of oils depends onthe safety knowledge gap, and Evettecan be your bridge.“There’s a big difference betweenhow I use these plant essences withAromatic Acupuncture for emotionalhealing and how they are used inmassage therapy,” Evette said. “Asa bodyworker, I will use them 2ways: 1) via a diffuser that sends thefragrance into the air; a great waythat these quality essences promotehealing, and 2) diluted with highquality message carrier oils (grapeseedor jojoba) that penetrate into themuscles being massaged to promotevarious tissue and joint healing,” shestated. She may even apply them to specificacupuncture points to acceleratehealing. Inside her two bags ofessential oils, blends and essences,Want to Increase Your Vibration?Aromatic Acupuncture May be the Way to Emotional Healingshe has about 95 different bottles, each one of them for a differenttherapeutic purpose.Emotional Blockages Translateto Poor Health“The goal of my aromaticacupuncture consultation sessionis to identify the body’s blockagesof energy and release the emotionsthat may be ‘stagnant’ there. Forexample, if there’s a blockage ofenergy along the heart energy path(meridian), a person can experiencea sense of abandonment, betrayal,no joy or passion, lack of happiness, controlling feelings or a feelingthat the love being expressed isconditional. These emotions feelreal to the person but they can bedealt with once the emotion has beenidentified, released, and the processof application is administered alongthe acupuncture point along themeridian. The essential oil blend willbe used for a specific period of timeby the client,” she said.“Every body and person is different;therefore, the body dictates thetimeframe. After that specific timeof using the oils is over, retesting isdone.”The emotions that we experiencecertainly can be a response to thecircumstances we face. For example,if you did not receive a Christmaspresent from your boss, any normalhuman being may feel his lack ofgratitude, resentment, even betrayal. However, if your chakras are aligned, these feelings wouldn’t last too long. They’d be processed with a healthymindset and you’d proceed on to thenext emotional crisis in life. If yourchakras were not balanced, you’dhold onto those emotions longer –sometimes years – and then yourreactions to new situations would bebased on these feelings. That’s whyit’s important to clear the negativeenergy to help restore a healthy balance.Even the Unborn Can be Hurt“The chakras come into play verysoon after conception. They developat certain points during development. For example, the Crown chakra isactive at about the 3rd month. TheThird Eye chakra is active at month4; the Heart chakra at month 6. Ifthe mother’s experience during thegestation period is traumatized in anyway, the infant could be born withchakras ‘out of balance’. This is justone way we can get out of alignment, and it begins at an early age.”What is AromaticAcupuncture?Evette admits that normal everydaytraumas can also create blockages inour emotions that affect the chakras, creating imbalances. The key, shesays, is to identify these imbalancesand proceed to use the highestenergetic substances on the face ofthe earth – true, pure plant essences– and use them to remove negativeenergy and get realigned to a healthyemotional state of well-being.The Aromatic Acupuncture methodof application she uses was developedby Alexandria Brighton.Combined with clinical kinesiology, she can determine which chakras /meridians need balancing first.“It’s important not to release morethan three emotions at one time,”she said. “Emotional releases can beoverwhelming so proceeding slowlyand cautiously but steadily is thekey.”Some of the essence remedies, referred to as HYDRessences, aretaken orally if they are recommendedfor you. These are called the Dragonseries. The Yellow Dragon HYDRessenceblend, for example, addressesour need for security, nourishment, comfort, stability, support, sympathyand abundance. The plant essencesin this blend support the digestivesystem, muscles, tendons, andligaments. The White Dragon is awarming blend of cinnamon, clovesand nutmeg that brings you the senseof letting go, inspiration, power, heaven, wisdom, refinement, andguidance. There are also other Dragons:Red, Green and Black. These HYDRessences (Dragon)blends are dropped into water andthen drunk throughout the day and/or evening. It’s an easy way to fosterchange in physical, mental and emotionalhealth.“Using these essential oils and plantessences has been such an aide to meand my clients. Their transformationhas accelerated very fast. I’d highlyrecommend their usage,” she said.To find out more about setting up aconsultation with Evette, give her acall at (916) 705-0600.8 January Edition 2010January Edition 2010 9

Flower PowerBy Dr. Donna, editor (ret. D.C.)By Amy NuttFlower PowerMaking New Year’s Resolutions Stick for GoodLet’s get down to the bottom lineof why you can’t keep those NewYear’s resolutions, or worse yet, whyyou won’t make them in the firstplace. It’s not that you haven’t gone to theright seminar or read the right bookor met the right people or the rightmentor to motivate you.The real reason is that you haveemotional issues that are blockingyou. Without emotional blockages, you would simply set a goal, thenobtain it, one right after the next. You would become limitless.Dr. Davis screens every patienthe sees in his office to determineif they have limiting beliefs. It isastonishing that almost everyonehas several severelylimiting beliefs, butthey are often notaware of some of themost serious onesbecause those beliefsare in the unconsciousmind.A great many peoplebenefit from startingwith ReviveAll, hismaster combination ofsix different flower essences. One ofthe flowers, Maquilina, actually hashelped hundreds of people overcomea sense of futility and hopelessness.By simply adding the drops intowater that is drunk during thedaytime in sips, the energetics of theflowers are transferred to the person, somewhat similar to a homeopathicpreparation or a Bach FlowerRemedy. In 21 days, quite often thesense of futility and hopelessness isgone. After ReviveAll, the rest of theAbundant Life Program is a greathelp and provides support over threemore months. How Can Flowers Have SoMuch Power? We don’t know as much aboutflowers as we do about foods andherbs. Scientists know that theessential oils of plants can beantimicrobial, anti-inflammatory,stimulant, relaxant, restorative andrejuvenating. The essential oil ofroses can put a person in a romanticmood when he or she wasn’t feelingromantic 10 minutes prior. The“The Source frequencies of these essencesappear to “overwrite” harmful memories anddefeating beliefs, replacing them with Divineflower harmonics. Our thoughts, behavior, andwell being can improve dramatically when weare no longer hindered by negative thoughtsand feelings hiding in the unconscious orsubconscious mind.” – Dr. Brent Davisessential oil of lavender can relaxthe most stressed out person or calmdown hungry cats clamoring fortheir dinner. However, the finding that flowersseem to have an emotional missionin life — to help us overcome ouremotional blocks — is a recognitionand belief that more and morepeople are starting to adopt afterlearning it from Dr. Davis. Here’s a list of some of theemotional hurts that otherflowers in the ReviveAllcombination address:May Apple• “I lose my power whenothers don’t listen to meor invalidate me.”• “I am too shy to showmy capabilities and my talents.”• “I fear being alone.”Maquilina• “No matter what actionI take, I will be defeated”Pink Lady Slipper• “My heart is not safe.”• “I cannot trust in life.”Blue Eyed Grass• “I suffer from the hurtof emotional abuse.”• “I have deep rage thatI cannot control.”Tulip Poplar• “My self-esteem isweak and unbalanced.”Wild Iris• “I am essentiallyunlovable.”• “I am disconnected fromthe Source of all life.”• “I am free from the threat of all beings.”Now think for just a moment aboutwhat’s happening here. If you arewalking through life with the hiddenemotional belief that whatever youdo won’t be a winning achievementfor you and that your mistakes areunforgivable, how can you eversucceed? When people witness thatthey are harboring the belief thatMaquilina removes (the utter senseof defeat) they often state, “Well…I don’t believe that!” They don’tbelieve it consciously perhaps, butit is the unconscious that is beingaddressed. How much good will anotherTony Robbins tape or seminar orfirewalk really do for you? Howmuch good will another mantra or100 affirmations do for you? Doyou really think that if you sayaffirmations long enough, yoursubconscious mind will believethem? It’s 2010, time to try somethingnew that really has much potential tochange you on a molecular, energeticlevel, possibly permanently. Check outwww.floralive.com for more info. How to Test for the EmotionalBlockage of Futility andHopelessnessDoes it strike a chord with youthat the following beliefs couldbe operating quietly in yourunconscious mind?• Regardless of my efforts, I cannotinfluence the outcome.• No matter what action I take, I willbe defeated. If it seems so, somewhere alongthe long path of life, you developedthis emotional blockage. Byusing the flower Maquilina, thisemotional obstacle in your life canoften be removed permanently, according to Dr. Davis.Photos: Copyright Dr. Brent Davis All rights reserved.Even though giving flowers onValentine’s Day is a tradition thatbegan back in the 1700´s with theintroduction of the flower languageto Persians by the Swede, Charles II,it is still a very popular one that iscarried on to this day. Thyroid health By Dr. David Minkoff By Dr. Gregg C. AndersonThyroid Disease:Why This Epidemic? On a global scale, a staggering 200million people have problems withtheir thyroid gland, with over 50%remaining undiagnosed. In the USalone, the instance of thyroid diseaseis running close to epidemic levels andequally as worrying is the number ofun-diagnosed or mis-diagnosed cases. So just what is responsible for theserunaway statistics? The Thyroid Gland —So Small, Yet So VitalMost people would locate their thyroidgland in the neck area, and many knowit is somehow linked to weight-gain orweight-loss. How many times have youheard an overweight person say, “I havethyroid problems”? Well what does thatreally mean? The thyroid gland sits wrappedaround the windpipe behind andbelow the Adam’s Apple area. Thissmall bowtie-shaped gland producesseveral hormones in both men andwomen, the two most important beingtriiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine(T4). These hormones help convertoxygen and calories into energy, making the thyroid the master glandof metabolism. The hormones are alsoessential for the proper functioningof all our organs, including our heart, musculoskeletal system and brain.Hypo or Hyper? The two most common forms ofthyroid disease are hypothyroidism andhyperthyroidism, and as their namessuggest, they are at opposite ends of thescale. When it functions as it should, thethyroid will produce T3 and T4 at a20% - 80% ratio. An underproductionof these hormones will slow downthe body’s metabolism, causinghypothyroidism. Common symptomsof this condition are weight gain despiteeating sensibly, feeling cold, fatigue, depression and possibly increased bloodpressure and cholesterol levels.Hyperthyroidism occurs when anexcess of T3 and T4 speeds up thebody’s metabolism, and if the mildcondition is left untreated, it canlead to complications such as severeweight loss despite a healthy appetite, nervousness, staring eyes, acceleratedheart rate and insomnia.Causes of Hypothyroidism• Autoimmune thyroiditis, where thebody’s own immune system attacksthe thyroid gland, is the major cause ofhypothyroidism.• A lack of iodine in the body. Iodine isnecessary for the production of thyroidhormones, and iodine deficiencydue to inadequate intake can lead toproblems.• This is also true for a deficiency ofprotein in the body and a deficiency ofmagnesium and zinc.• Heavy metal poisoning (as withmercury, lead, arsenic, and cadmium)of the thyroid can also lead tohypothyroidism; chemicals andpesticides can also be a factor.• Root canal teeth can leak toxins intothe body and enter the thyroid gland, producing malfunction.• Babies can be born without a thyroidgland, or with one that is not properlyfunctioning.• Surgical removal of the thyroid glandor treatment with radioactive iodine, often for hyperthyroidism, can alsolead to hypothyroidism.Causes of Hyperthyroidism• In 70% of people withhyperthyroidism, the cause is a geneticdisorder called Graves’ disease.Graves’ disease may be secondaryto dental infections, root canals ormercury fillings.• Lumps or nodules in the thyroid maygradually grow and increase in activityalso leading to an overproduction ofthyroid hormones.• Thyroiditis (inflammation of thethyroid gland), where the thyroidgland leaks thyroid hormones into theblood.• Overmedication with triiodothyronine(T3) and/or levothyroxine (T4)may also cause hyperthyroidism. Why This Epidemic?Thyroid disease is one of the silentepidemics of our time. Theshocking fact is that nearly halfof all women and aquarter of all men inthe US will die withevidence of an inflamedthyroid. As with many of today’sillnesses, the increasedincidence of thyroiddisease can be linked toan overburden of toxins caused bypollution through air, water and food. Ifyou have a concern about your thyroid, you may want to note the followingpotential causes of problems:Iodine deficiency is one cause ofhypothyroidism. However, studiesare also showing that in the case ofchronic autoimmune thyroiditis, thehighest prevalence occurs in countrieswith the highest intake of iodine, suchas the US and Japan. So, althoughiodine supplementation should beimplemented to prevent and treat iodinedeficiency disorders, supplementationshould be maintained at a safe level.Soy. High soy consumers and users ofisoflavone supplements can be at risk ofthyroid disorders since soy isoflavonescan damage thyroid function. This isactually a rare occurance.Smoking has a negative impact onthyroid function and can cause a 3 to 5fold increase in the risk of all types ofthyroid disease.Tap water. Standard water treatmentplants cannot remove the chemicalperchlorate from the water supply.According to one researcher, “There isa statistical association between lowlevelcontamination with ammoniumperchlorate and elevated or abnormalthyroid function.” Also, chlorinecontent in the water can displace themuch needed iodine.Fluoride is a poison for enzymes thataccumulates in the body. Since thebody can only eliminate 50% of its totalfluoride intake, this build-up can causeharm to the thyroid by blocking the useof iodine.Pesticides such as sumithrin (Anvil) andresmethrin (Scourge), are coming underconsiderable criticism for their adversechronic effects on the thyroid.Family history of thyroid disease is awarning signal. Also a family historyof depression, autoimmune disease, chronic fatigue or weight issues cansignify thyroid problems.continued page 24Discipline is a Pain! It’s into the New Year already, but nottoo late to take an honest lookat the role of discipline in yourlife and, ifnecessary, make somechangesto enjoy lifemore than youever knew you could.Like many people I meet, you may have never reallyconsidered the healthroad you are on. Most ofus just cruise throughlife and do our bestto navigate the inevitableobstaclesthat interfere withour health.Only when theobstacles get badenough, do we takeourselves to a doctorand hope for the best.I’ve seen that mostfolks never reallythink too much abouttheir health until itslips away. By then, unfortunately, it canbe too late to getmuch back. Likemany blessings inour lives, we oftentake our health forgranted until it’s gone.I have learned that much ofwhat separates the“haves” fromthe “havenots”when itcomes to vibrant health, is discipline. To pro-actively pursue great healthand wellness requires discipline. Theproblem is, discipline is a pain-a realpain. Discipline is a pain at home, work, school, play, even in marriage. It’s a pain mentally, spiritually, emotionallyand physically. Heck, I’mtired just thinking about all the waysmy life requires discipline!I’ve learned that much about lifeis truly a pain. I have also seenthat the pain of discipline is likelifting a few pounds. It takessome effort. In contrast, the painof regret, for all the things wehave lost because of a lackof discipline, is like bearingthe weight of hundredsof pounds. Regret can berough, and painful. So, itseems, that some pain is inevitable. The good news is,for the most part, we get tochoose: the pain of a fewpounds on an ongoingbasis, or the unbearablepain of tons laterin life. When I first sit down withnew patients, I always tryto get a sense of their valuesand interests. I’m very interestedin people. Many newfolks I meet at Anderson Chiropracticare in pain. Theirmain interest is simple;get out of pain! I canrelate. I have been in pain, too. However, what is moreof a challenge is to helppeople understand twoimportant concepts. Oneis that pain is usually notthe real problem. Most pain thatI deal with is actually a warningsignal. Its job is to alert the brainto a problem. Second, problemsare often the result ofyears of neglect andinadequate disciplinein terms ofspinal maintenance. It does not take a tremendous amountof discipline to get out of pain. Painhas a way of almost making us payattention and do whatever treatmentis necessary until it goes away.Usually that involves showing upfor chiropractic adjustments, homeice therapy, stretching and the like.Good ol’ pain has a way of moti-vating and inspiring us to be disciplined!I think a little paddling onthe tushie works the same way withtoddlers. What takes more discipline is takingthe recent bout of pain as a lessonand then embarking on a pursuit ofstability, correction and maintenance. This pursuit takes more disciplinebecause there is no longer muchpain, if any, to motivate and inspireus. Now is the time to regularlyhoist and endure the few painfulpounds of discipline. The truth is that one’s health is goingin one of three directions: slowly gettingworse, maintaining or actuallyimproving. We get to choose. If wechoose to treat our health passively,it will usually slowly get worse. Inthe case of spinal health, this usuallymeans the progression of spinal immobility, muscular atrophy, disc degenerationand then pinched nerves,Healtharthritis and organ damage: the painof regret. The better choice is to accept andembrace the pains of discipline. Itis the only way to improve or evenmaintain wellness. These painsinclude perhaps a little time, a fewbucks, some effort and the like. Nodiscipline is easy. Few people areever successful by accident. I guessyou could say wellness is not an accident. My hope is always to be encouragingand to help people make informed, rational choices about their healthand wellness. There’s no free andeasy ride to the top, but once youget closer, the view is amazing andcertainly worth the painful efforts. To help, I have some awesome NewYear plans for our patients and I amalmost through the process to be acertified 100 Year Lifestyle Provider.Make 2010 your best year ever!14 January Edition 2010January Edition 2010 15

Discover Wniter!By Jonathan AngelilliBy Kimberly AardalDiscover Wniter!Snowboard Fitness –Snowboard Exercisesand WorkoutsAdvanced Snowboard Exercises andStrength Programs for Pro SnowboardersSnowboarding is a sport that requiresa balance of physical strength, technicalskill, and mental focus. Naturally, for a pro athlete, all 3 of these skill setsmust be optimized, along with nutrition, flexibility, and rest/recovery. A properlydesigned strength and conditioning programwill provide any pro athlete witha major advantage in physical strength,AMPLITUDE, and STYLE over his/her competitors, while decreasing therisk of injury and increasing the judges’score cards.Physical strength is broken down intodifferent qualities of strength: power, power endurance, absolute strength, speed strength, and strength endurance. What kind of strength is required variesdepending on the kind of event. Bewarned, these are advanced programs, even a pro athlete must build up tothem, especially if they have not doneworkouts like this before or haven’tbeen training hard in a gym for at least2 years. Working with a partner ortrainer is always advised to maintainsafety when performing heavy lifts.Half-Pipe/Snow ParkFor a pro freestyle snowboarder in thehalf-pipe, power endurance is goingto be very important; in particular, the ability to accelerate off the lipexplosively, and decelerate rapidlywhen landing back into the pipe, overand over again. To train for powerendurance, you should use heavyweights for low reps (2-5) doingcompound movements like a barbellback squat and a slow temp (4 secondsdown, no pause at the bottom, 2 secondsup, no pause at the top) coupled withincomplete rest. By managing, tracking, and gradually tweaking these acutetraining variables (rest, tempo, sets, reps), a pro-snowboarder can be assuredthat the program will allow them tokeep pushing their limits on the snowand getting higher and higher out of thepipe. This workout should be coupledwith an explosive/polymeric workoutthat emphasizes Olympic lifts (snatch& clean& jerk), depth jumps and otherplyometrics that require the body todecelerate its mass at a rapid rate. There will be very similar strength requirementsfor the snow park. Increasingpower endurance will help greatlyin preventing injury and bumping amplitude. While the park/pipe is the bestplace to practice technical skills, likegrabs, putting trick combos together, etc., the gym is by far the best placeto intelligently push the limits of yourstrength and power.Quarter-PipeFor the quarter pipe, the most importantstrength quality is power. The PROneeds to be able to explode two times, once to get up, once to land, and thengets to rest for awhile in betweenattempts. Their program needs toinclude a pure power workout: heavyloads of 1-3 reps, 6-8 sets, only 1 or2 exercises, including at least one“to get flexible, you have to get strongin a larger range of motion.”Olympic lift. The athlete should restat least 3 minutes in between sets toensure maximal neurological recovery, which is necessary for maximum powerdevelopment.GrabsWhile grabs are obviously technical andare not going to be practiced in a gym(unless you have a huge trampoline setup), you can still push the boundariesand take your grabs to the next levelwith a balanced strength trainingprogram. Optimal strength can onlybe developed when the athlete has anoptimal range of motion i.e. flexibility.Lack of flexibility is mainly due toWEAKNESS, which the body respondsto by developing tightness. So to getflexible, you have to get strong in alarger range of motion. A stretchingprogram will help if you use gentlecontraction while stretched to increaseyour strength in tight ranges. Hold thecontraction for 5 seconds, then releasedeeper into the stretch, and repeat 3 or4 times. Developing strength in newranges will allow the athlete moreflexibility to TWEAK THEIR GRABS!You know the judges love it; a littleextra tweak can make a big differenceon their score card.Program DesignIt is important to keep in mind thatwhile there are a lot of cool exercisesand workouts that will transfer to yourabilities on the slopes, the only way toconsistently make progress is to trackyour workouts and gradually manipulatethe training variables (exercise selection, tempo, rest, sets, reps). With theindustry’s explosive growth, athleteswith the most talent, most commitment, and best programming are the ones thatare going to excel both on and off theslopes. If you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact me orvisit me at www.ptbizcoach.comJonathan Angelilli aka Johnny Fitnesshas worked as a full time trainer forover 8 years, has completed 8 certifications, trains several celebrities, andis currently the Training Director ofDynamic Results, an upscale fitnessand lifestyle company in NYC. One wintersport that comes to mind is snowshoeing.Snowshoeing has become apopular pastime in Colorado and otherstates that embrace winter sports. Thewonderful thing about snowshoeing isyou don’t need any specialized skillsor training to do it. Any person that canhike can snowshoe. While snowshoeing has been aroundfor many years, only recently sincethe 1970’s, has it become a recreationalactivity for outdoor enthusiasts.Snowshoeing was a necessity for manyliving in rugged, snowy terrain and theonly way to travel through deep snowduring the winter months. Along withthe recent popularity of snowshoeing, technology has stepped up and designedand manufactured more durable andlightweight snowshoes. Snowshoeshave come a long way since the woodenframed, rawhide-laced versions worn byInuits and Native Americans. If you want to try snowshoeing, checkwith local ski rental shops where youplan to snowshoe. Most will havesnowshoes for rent. This is a good wayto see if this is a sport you want to getinto. The experts in the rental shopsshould be able to offer advice on sizeand type of snowshoes to rent. Alongwith the snowshoes, they will fit youwith appropriate sized poles that willcome in handy during your hike. Youshould also have a good pair of insulatedwinter boots and gaiters (gaiters fitover your pants and boot tops) to keepyour feet warm and dry. Start off bypracticing walking with your snowshoeson near the trailhead until you feel comfortableand ready to venture out. Takeit slow and conserve energy by keepingyour feet close to the snow so you’realmost shuffling along.Snowshoeing Tips1. Determine snowshoe size based onyour weight, which will determinethe length you need.2. Choose snowshoes based on youractivity and experience.• Recreational (hiking snowshoe) –Best for most beginners and gentleterrain• Backcountry – Best for hut trips, winter camping trips and moreadvanced snowshoers• Racing – Designed for those whowant to move fast through the snowand compete in snowshoe races• Women’s – Designed with womenin mind to accommodate stride andbody shape unique to women3. Snowshoe poles are invaluable forbalance and help to get you up hills.4. Purchase good quality insulatedwaterproof boots.5. Wear appropriate winter clothing.• Base layer• Wicking layer• Insulating layer• Warm hat• Warm gloves• Warm socks“Snowshoeing is a perfect way to get someoutdoor time during the winter months andkeep those blues at bay. It brings a wholenew perspective and beauty to our naturalsurroundings. ”6. Bring along the Ten Essentials – thevery same essentials you should takeon a hike.7. Practice good etiquette while snowshoeing.Avoid cross-country skitracks if at all possible. Big snowshoescan really mess up cross-countryski trails.8. Bring along a nice hot thermos ofsoup or chocolate to enjoy on thetrail.9. Be aware of avalanche potential;see avalanche safety tips. Eventhough you may be careful and knowavalanche safety rules, others maynot be. So be vigilante and aware ofothers around you that may triggeravalanches and avoid those areas.Finding a good trail to snowshoe is aseasy as finding a good hiking trail. Inmost cases, trails that can be hiked inthe summer will make good choicesfor snowshoeing as long as they are nottoo steep. The most important factor isnavigating. While many trails are wellmarked in the summer, winter brings ablanket of white that covers the obviouspath you may be used to.The other common navigating obstacleis fresh snow. Some snowshoe trailsmay be very popular and well markedfrom previous snowshoers or crosscountryskiers, but after a fresh dump ofsnow, it is more challenging to stay onthe trail.Other hidden dangers may includeponds, rivers, hidden drop-offs that arenot discernable while snow covered.Keep in mind that you generally cannotcover as many miles snowshoeing asyou can hiking so pace yourself andgive yourself plenty of time to enjoy thesurrounding beauty and solitude thatwinter brings. Popular snowshoe trailsin Colorado can be found in most areasof the state. Many Colorado mountaintowns have ski areas or Nordic centersthat offer groomed trails for both snowshoersand cross-country skiers.Snowshoeing is a perfect way to getsome outdoor time during the wintermonths and keep those blues at bay.It brings a whole new perspective andbeauty to our natural surroundings. There is nothing better than venturingout after a fresh snowfall and breathingin snow scrubbed fresh air while savoringthe quiet and solitude of the forestor mountains that a blanket of snowbrings.I live and spend time in SouthwestColorado and have a passion for hikingand the outdoors. I live in the highcountry with my husband and our yellowlab Ginger. healthBy Phil Le Bretonthyroid HealthPeripheral NeuropathySufferers!Told by neurologists you’ll have to take medicationfor pain the rest of your life, and you will get worse?I urge you to get a second opinion!Hi, my name is Dr. Wayne Pack, D.C. In 2006, I developed peripheralneuropathy. I experienced severe pain in my feet and toes. My legs feltlike they belonged to someone else, and there were times when I wishedthey did belong to someone else. I was also having difficulty with my balance andcoordination. After some time, I was examined by two local Sacramento neurologists. They both confirmed that I was suffering with peripheral neuropathy. Theytold me three things:1) there was nothing that could be done for it2) I would just have to take medication to relieve the pain3) my condition would get worse and in all probability, I would end up with acane or walker, and I might become unable to walk.As a die hard golfer and skier, I was devastated. I accepted their diagnosis, but nottheir forecast for my future. Shortly thereafter, I started exhaustive research on thetreatment of peripheral neuropathy. My research led me to a group of medical andchiropractic neurologists in Europe who have helped thousands of peripheral neuropathysufferers get their lives back. Their work has been introduced to doctorsin the United States under the name, “The Neuropathy Centers of America.” I amhappy to say that I am a proud member of this group of doctors.By applying their treatment protocols,my legs and feet now function normallywithout pain, or numbness and I nolonger experience a loss of balance orcoordination. I have now been treatingperipheral neuropathy patients successfullyfor over two years. And yes, I amnow playing golf again, and I expectto go skiing as soon as the good Lordsends a little more snow. What is Peripheral Neuropathy?Peripheral neuropathy is a condition inwhich there is a loss of communicationbetween the brain, and the spinal cord, and the periphery (chiefly, the feet andlegs, and in some cases, the hands andarms) where the many bizarre, painful, symptoms peripheral neuropathyusually occur. In order to gain morepermanent relief in peripheral neuropathy, normal function must be restoredbetween the brain, the spinal cord, & theperiphery (the feet, legs, hands & arms). How We Restore Normal Function!First we use an Federal Drug Administrationapproved 51K Neuromuscular1000 Electronic Stimulator, theNeuroCare. It is able to recruit moremuscle fibers via high voltage withoutdiscomfort due to the low amperage. This new treatment is designed to helppeople suffering with peripheral anddiabetic neuropathy. It is causing excitementin the medical community formore info, go to www.neurocare.com.The NeuroCare Muscle Stimulator!1) Increases circulation2) Improves the condition of musclewasting away from disuse3) Reduces the swelling in the feet(edema)4) Lowers blood sugar levels5) Lowers blood pressure6) Helps heal wounds that have nothealed with “conventional” treatment7) Stops and/or reduce pain and helprestore normal feeling in the feetand legs.In addition, we use oxygen withexercise therapy (OWET), vibrationtherapy to enhance individual cellularfunction, revolutionary, researched, auditorystimulation scientifically provento balance the hemispheres of thebrain, spinal manipulation, and intersegmentaltraction of the spine. A certainamount of selenium is needed to protectthe body from viruses and to promotehealthy thyroid function. Researchis being done and shows promise inusing selenium to treat HIV and AIDS,allergies, flu, chronic fatigue syndrome, strokes, arthritis and more.Selenium helps to regulate thyroid hormonesand also supports the immunesystem. It helps to create antioxidantsthat clear out and protect cells from freeradicals. Selenium deficiency is thoughtto trigger viruses into attacking andreproducing. Studies are being done totest the theory that selenium deficiencyis the trigger for the HIV virus (amongothers) to switch from dormant intoactive status. It is believed that virusesswitch into action when they need tovisit more cells in search for more selenium. It is also believed that appropriateselenium levels slow down the HIVvirus replication process.Selenium is critical for thyroidhormone metabolism. It is part of theenzyme necessary for conversion of T4hormone into the active form T3. Lowselenium levels can lead to thyroiddamage and hypothyroidism. However, high levels can do the same thing. Therefore, if you have thyroid issues,it is extremely important to monitoryour thyroid function along with yourdietary intake of selenium. A skilledphysician or nutritionist will help youadjust and determine the right dosageof vitamins and supplements requiredfor your thyroid to function at its bestlevel. We get selenium from whole grains, some seafood, most meats, and nuts. The amount of selenium we getfrom grains and nuts depends onthe selenium content of the soil thatthey were grown in. The content ofselenium in meat depends on theamount present in the plants that theanimals fed on. Levels of seleniumin soil vary so much from region toregion that it is very hard to tell howmuch we are actually getting.Brazil nuts have an unusually highamount of selenium, as much as eighthundred times the daily requirementper ounce. If you do eat Brazil nuts,do so in moderation and watch for sideeffects of having too much selenium inyour diet. Hair loss, horizontal whitestreaking or blotching of the fingernails, garlic breath, gastrointestinaldisturbance, fatigue, irritability, andflushing of the face are signs of toomuch selenium. The anti-viral, antioxidant and antibioticproperties of selenium make it usefulfor maintaining a healthy immune systemand is thought to help prevent heartdisease and certain cancers. Depletionscan occur when you have gastrointestinalproblems that cause seleniumnot to be absorbed. Selenium is alsodestroyed in foods that are processed orrefined. This can lead to autoimmuneproblems and thyroid problems.Talk with your doctor if you plan onsupplementing with selenium beforeyou buy vitamins. (See www.nutri.comfor supplements.) A vitamin and supplementsregimen should be discussedwith a health care professional familiarwith your health history and currentmedications to avoid drug interactionsor unwanted side effects.Phil Le Breton is owner of WholesaleNutrition, top quality wholesalesupplements with the best VitaminC Powder on the market (C-Salts).Visit www.nutri.com to buy vitaminsor buy supplements of the highestquality.Editor’s Note: A hair analysis candetermine your selenium levels and isconsidered just as accurate as a more expensiveblood test. Thyroid Disease:Why This Epidemic?Continued from p. 14Radiation and X-Rays are knownto cause damage to the thyroid andtechnicians should always cover thepatient’s throat.Stress is a factor in almost every kindof disease and can affect the thyroid.Pregnancy. It is estimated that between5-10% of all pregnancies will result inPPT (Postpartum Thyroiditis).Menopause. Hormonal changes duringthis period of a woman’s life can wreakhavoc on her thyroid. Why This Misdiagnosis? The statistic that more than 50 percent of thyroid disorders remainun-diagnosed is alarming. Why isthis? One problem is that becausesymptoms of hypothyroidism oftenvary from person to person and arenon-specific, the correct diagnosiscan easily be missed. Many casesremain undiagnosed becausesome practitioners and the patientsthemselves, mistake the symptoms ofhypothyroidism for depression, obesityor menopause.Hyperthyroidism tends to run infamilies, occurring most often in youngwomen. It is often misdiagnosed as aneating disorder, anxiety or stress. The thyroid affects all the otherhormones in the body and its properregulation is essential to goodhormonal balance and health. Withthe disturbing increase in thyroiddisease, at LifeWorks Wellness Centerwe suggest that an annual screeningof thyroid function be done. Thiswould include blood tests that checkon thyroid hormone levels and bodyiodine levels.Health Article submitted by: American Thoracic SocietyExercisingBy Marc McCauley, Son of Bill McCauley, healthYoga Instructor, Koh Samui, ThailandResearchersFind NewPatterns inH1N1 DeathsBrazilian researchers have performedthe first-ever autopsy study toexamine the precise causes of death invictims of the H1N1 swine flu.“The lack of information on thepathophysiology of this novel diseaseis a limitation that prevents betterclinical management and hinders thedevelopment of a therapeutic strategy,”said lead author, Thais Mauad, M.D.,Ph.D., associate professor of theDepartment of Pathology at São PauloUniversity, in Brazil. The results of their study will bepublished in the January 1 issue of theAmerican Thoracic Society’s AmericanJournal of Respiratory and CriticalCare Medicine. The researchers examined 21 patientswho had died in São Paulo withconfirmed H1N1 infection in July andAugust, 2009. Most were betweenthe ages of 30 and 59. They foundthat three-quarters (76 percent) ofthe patients had underlying medicalconditions such as heart diseaseor cancer, but there was no clearcomplicating medical condition in theremaining quarter. All presented aprogressive and rapidly fatal form ofthe disease. While previous data has shown thatmost patients with a non-fatal infectionhave fever, cough and achiness(myalgia), Dr. Mauad noted that “mostpatients with a fatal form of the diseasepresented with difficulty breathing(dyspnea), with fever and myalgia beingless frequently present.”All patients died of severe acute lunginjury, but there were three distinctpatterns of the damage to their lungs, indicating that the infection killedin distinct ways. “All patients havea picture of acute lung injury,” saidDr. Mauad. “In some patients this isthe predominant pattern; in others, acute lung injury is associated withnecrotizing bronchiolitis (NB); and inothers there is a hemorrhagic pattern.”“Patients with NB are more likely tohave a bacterial co-infection. Patientswith heart disease and cancer are morelikely to have a hemorrhagic conditionin their lungs. It is important to bearin mind that patients with underlyingmedical conditions must be adequatelymonitored, since they are at greaterrisk of developing a severe H1N1infection,” said Dr. Mauad. In thesepatients, H1N1 infection may present asa potential fatal disease, requiring earlyand prompt intensive care management, including protective ventilationstrategies and adequate hemodynamicmanagement. “We found that 38percent of these patients had a bacterialinfection (bronchopneumonia). Thishas important consequences becausethese patients need to receive antibiotictherapy, in addition to antiviraltherapy.”The researchers also found evidenceof an influenza-associated “cytokinestorm,” an aberrant immune responsein the lungs of certain individuals, which was almost certainly involvedin the pathogenesis in these fatalcases of the H1N1 infection. “[This]suggests that an overly vigorous hostinflammatory response triggered bythe viral infection may spill over to anddamage lung tissue, thereby causingacute lung injury and fatal respiratoryfailure,” noted John Heffner, M.D., pastpresident of the ATS.Further research is needed tounderstand precisely how and whycertain patients succumb to a fatalprogression when infected with H1N1.While most patients experience a mildillness with no lasting effects, thisresearch lays important groundworkfor future efforts by defining thehistological patterns associated with afatal infection.“We would like to deepen ourefforts into the understanding ofthe immune responses in cases ofsevere infection,” said Dr. Mauad.“This could ultimately lead to newtherapeutic approaches.”–––––––––––––––––––––––––––Contact for Study: Thais Mauad M.D.,Ph.D., Department of Pathology, SaoPaulo University Medical School, AvDr Arnaldo, 455 Room 1155, 01246-903, Sao Paulo SP, BrazilPhone: +55 11 30617173E-mail: tmauad@usp.brContact for Commentary: JohnHeffner, M.D., Past President of theAmerican Thoracic SocietyPhone: (503) 215-6258into 2010There are some interesting ways oflooking at what our society callsExercise. In America we “Exercise”more that any other nation in theworld. We seem to be intent on lookingthe best we can in order to fit into themodel of styles that we have createdthrough movies and magazines, etc.As we grow older, we also wouldlike to feel as good as possible for alonger amount of time. The thoughtof getting older seems to be terrifyingto most of us and exercise is assumedto be the activity through which wemight maintain a youthful position ofcomfort and vitality for the longestamount of time possible.Health and fitness are major goals formany of us. In order to reach, achieveand enjoy the experience of a goal,we must have a clear idea what healthand fitness means to us. This is simplybecause we must know what we arelooking for, in order to find it. Wehave been a most inventive lot here inAmerica, creating countless machinesand automatic apparatus in an attemptto make our lives more enjoyable. Theidea of time-saving devices givingus more time for leisure can lead tomany interesting outcomes, and stemsagain from our need to make life seemlonger; without so much sufferingwould be nice.So now our “equation” is forming.Life Time Exercise-Health-Leisure-Invention. The power in and of work isthe catalyst that creates the interactionof each one of these components. Workis a very ordinary word in our society, which in truth creates everythingextraordinary. Work through your lifeover time equals accomplishment.Work during your exercise time forhealth allows you to enjoy your leisure.Work on your Inventions creates timeto exercise for health. These six words – life, time, exercise, health, leisure and invention – seem togo together in endless ways. The wordthat seems to represent the desiredoutcome of all these combinationsis the seventh word that belongs inour equation - Happiness. Withouthappiness, life is worthless. Timemeans nothing, Exercise is futile,Health is impossible, Leisure is nonexistent, and Invention is uninspiring.Life is not an answer to an equation,as if some kind of outcome will bequenching of the purpose of your life.Life is more of a group of wonderfulquestions whose answers comeconstantly in little Inspirations andglimpses of enthusiasm. A balance ofyour own perception allows the viewof reality.Balance is the key to success in Life.Balance in your body is broughtabout through working out a balancedExercise routine. Bringing Life,Time, Exercise, Health, Leisure, andInvention into proper focus creates aHappy life.In our modern society, time is avery valuable commodity. Thescheduling of events that unfolds isa balancing act we all participate in.The form of exercise we choose iskey to the outcome of our Health. Thechosen form of exercise must haveregenerative qualities that rebuild, replenish and reorganize 100% ofthe body’s systems. Each personhas a chosen amount of time he orshe devotes to exercise. Spending100% of this allotted time engagingin exercises that only affect a smallpercentage of the body’s manysystems and functions is not a goodinvestment of time. It’s too much timeinvested with not enough return. Wemust go back to the essence of thebody in order to bring the body backto proper balance. There is not a machine that canbalance the body and mind, bringingus to the point of health. In order toachieve balance and full body health, there is only one agency to turn to andthis is the human body itself. Noneof those wonderful machines we’vecreated have the ability to createthemselves, maintain themselves, orthink for themselves. We as humansmust understand that the only “thing”that can fix the body is the body, andthis must be done through the habitualpractice of wisdom exercises. The body is not only psychologicaland physical it is also physiological. In order to bring the body to itsfull potential we have to take intoconsideration the wisdom of the body.Educating ourselves in the processof the Yoga science does this. YogaScience was developed from andas the essence of life. It is a perfectscience of life and treats 100% of thebody’s systems, bringing the bodyback into balance.Man has invented many machines. These machines are assumed to makelife more enjoyable. We respect andadmire these machines, assumingthey will do he work for us. Muchadvancement has been made intransportation, communication andprocessing of data. Many aspects oflife have come to change completelythrough the invention of manymechanical devices. These machinessprung from essence, which iscreativity. It is very important toremember that the human body andmind created these machines. Thehuman body and mind being Healthy,To be balanced and focused is thedesired outcome of our exerciseroutine. In America we have been exercisingmore than any other country inthe world yet we have more healthproblems than any other country. For more information about thisarticle contact Yoga Loka at:916-454-4100, 4820 Folsom Blvd.,Sacramento CA, 95819. As we lookin the mirror, those little laughlines, creases across our forehead, and the slight sag of our jaw line areoftentimes indications of life passingthat we’d prefer to erase, or at leastdiminish. The market knows this andproducts, “procedures” and miraclecreams abound. But do these productsreally do what they claim? And whatabout the more invasive proceduressuch as facelifts and injections of toxicsubstances such as Botox? How abouta chemical peel where you literallydissolve the top layers of your skin?Yes, these can and do diminish lines andwrinkles. But do any of these actuallyaddress the sources of aging? Theanswer is no.This is the first in a series of sixmonthly columns, which will addressanti-aging, both in skin care and nutrition.A revolutionary technology willlaunch this January. In fact, what isabout to happen will change the skincare industry forever. It is patentedand it is the only technology clinicallyproven to stop the skin from aging.Together with this technology, we’lltalk about another treatment for thosewho love their skin and want it to lookmore vibrant, healthier and just plainbetter. This was originally inventedby an Italian physician and physicistnamed Luigi Galvani back in the1700’s and has been utilized in highendsalons, mostly in Europe, for thelast 50+ years. Treatments range from$150 - $400, depending on local. Thatdoesn’t include the time you spend fittingthis luxury into your already busyschedule. You may be wondering, just whatis a Galvanic treatment? This is aprocess where a mild energy currentis used, along with a treatment gel,to deep cleanse, lift out impurities, tone and tighten, reduce pore size andrejuvenate the skin. It’s affectionatelyknown to Europeans as “the wrinkleiron”! Your skin becomes much moreabsorbent (up to 70%) to any productyou apply afterward. When you’realready spending your money on costlypotions, wouldn’t you like to knowthey’re actually being absorbed insteadof just sitting on your skin’s surface? So perhaps you’re thinking that thissounds like a simple way to enhancethe appearance of your skin, reducelines and wrinkles, get that glow back, but you just don’t want to spend thatkind of money. The recent introductionof a small, hand-held deviceallows you to have this fabulous skincareregimen for about $7 a treatment.Have you ever tried to get rid of cellulite?Pretty impossible withoutliposuction. Yes, that’s right, usingthis little device, along with a specialbody gel, reduces the appearance ofcellulite. In fact, 35% using this treatmentexperienced a decrease (up toone inch) in the circumference of theirthighs. That alone is worth its weightin gold! One of the most commonly used techniquestoday, Botox therapy, certainlydoes reduce lines and wrinkles. It isalso extremely costly as injectionsneed to be given every 4 to 5 monthsfor lasting results. Side effects includebruising, flu symptoms, respiratoryinfection and muscle weakness. Afriend of mine who tried this beforeshe discovered the Galvanic device, said, “I had the worse headache ofmy life!” Although the procedureis deemed “safe” by the FDA, theBy Carrie PepperBotulinum toxin is the most poisonousbiological substance known to man.An injection, in very small amounts, blocks nerve impulses and paralyzesthe muscles. petsBy Officer Randy Van Dusenand Top Dog, BuckBy Dr. Donna (ret. D.C.)petsTop Tips fromthe Top DogQuestion from Lucy the Laborador:Top Dog Buck, how did you go frombeing just a regular dog from a dogpack to such a Top Dog on the PoliceForce wearing the Badge of Honor? It’s the new year and I was settingsome goals for myself and thoughtmaybe if I did the same things that youdid, I could be a Top Dog just like you!Answer: Lucy, you are smart to thinkahead. So many of our four-leggedfriends set such minimal standardsfor themselves. They’re content withwagging their tail when their Mastercomes home at night and begging forscraps at the dinner table. What kindof life is that? Dogs should be moredignified than that!Just think about it. We are scentmasters of the world. Even the breedsthat don’t ever do police work havenoses worth high honor. We can sniff out a burglar, follow histrack for miles, find cocaine amidstthousands of boxes on a cargo deck, help an epileptic get ready for aseizure and call for help, and identifyhurt parts of the body with our nose. And that’s just one set of skills. Some of us can scale a 10-foot wall, jump repeatedly without tiring, jumpthrough car windows to get the badguys, tackle a human and take himdown, and intimidate criminals intodoing the right thing and not trying toescape. We’re graceful as a gazelle, dedicatedto our Master, can sense evil intenton the part of someone and don’t putup with an evil eye looking our way. We’re the best of the best. And I’m notjust talking about police dogs. Many ofyou dogs out there can do a lot of thesethings as well.$3 off Grooming (exp 01/15/10)15% off Pet Supplies (exp 01/15/10)We have a heart of gold and we wouldnever think twice about giving our lifefor our Master. So you have to remember who you areand what you were made to do. That’sa first step and it’s drilled into us intraining. We’re treated like Top Dogsand after awhile, we start acting likeTop Dogs. Now if you’re at home watching alot of television, let me ask you this. What shows are you watching whenyour Master is at work? The DogWhisperer only deals with dogs thathaven’t learned who they are andtheir potential. Flip the stations withyour paw and find the ones that showamazing dogs, like heroic rescue dogsin the 9-11 disaster, FBI working dogs,Canine Courage shows, Therapy Dogsor Mascots of the Civil War.If you want something a little different, check out the movie station and findthe movies about the RCA Victordog, Air Bud, Lassie and Rin Tin Tin.While you’re watching these shows, something will happen deep insideyour brain: sparks of inspiration willbecome seeds. Then ask yourself the question,“What’s the best that I can be? Whatone skill can I excel in that will delightmy Master more than anything? Oneday you will then have a picture popup in your brain of the answer. Thenjust become the dog in that picture.Learning may have a few obstacles butyou will do it because that trick is whatyou’re supposed to do in life. Trust meon this. It works.Question From Jared Millerfor Officer Randy:This New Year I want to set somegoals for my family on crimeprevention. Our neighborhood isgetting rough and I worry about them. What do you recommend?Answer: You can make great progressby creating drills with your family onwhat to lock up the house before bed.Create a list of things that must bedone so that your family can staysafe at night while they sleep. Includethings like: check the windows tomake sure they’re closed and locked, check the doors, check the stove tomake sure the oven and burners areturned off and lock the garage. It maytake a few hours to create your list buttake the time to put the list items inorder so the actual home check onlytakes a minute each night. This way itwill always be done no matter if you’refeeling sick. If you’re not feelingwell, it’s still important to do the drillbecause that’s the worst time that apotential criminal can take advantageof you. So be safe, not sorry!Top Dog Buck and Officer Randy VanDusen are officers at the SacramentoPolice Department. healthBy Dr. Donna, EditorBy Dr. Donna (ret. D.C.)healthIs It Gossipor Truth?Diary of Neck PainEditor’s note: Below is a copy of anemail I received about a health issue. When these come in the email, it’simportant to determine whether or notthere’s any truth to them. Here’s theemail:“I want my friends and loved ones to knowwhat has happened to me in hopes that itwill never happen to you or anybody youcare about.About 10 days ago, I felt a cold coming on;so before I went to bed I used Zicam ColdRemedy Nasal Gel. It’s supposed to helpyou “get over your cold faster.”Immediately after I sprayed it into eachnostril I felt the most horrific burningsensation imaginable. It literally felt like Ihad sprayed pepper spray directly into mybrain. It burned all the way to the top ofmy skull. My nasal passages swelled, myeyes watered - the burning lasted all nightlong into the next day. After about a day, I realized I couldn’ttaste anything and I thought, “Wow!I must really have a bad cold.” ThenI noticed that I couldn’t smell coffeebrewing, couldn’t smell my perfume whenI put it on, couldn’t smell the popcornI burned, couldn’t smell my favoritecandle. I panicked and starting smellingeverything that I could find that had reallystrong odors - ammonia, finger nail polishremover, bleach, etc. I couldn’t smellANYTHING!I started tasting everything that had reallystrong tastes such as HOT salsa, raw redonions, Doritos, coffee. I couldn’t tasteANYTHING! I told my mother and she said, “Oh, I’veheard Zicam can affect your olfactorynerve.”I went online, typed in “Zicam sideeffects” and bam; up popped all sorts ofweb sites with people reporting the samething I experienced. It seems that this pastJune, Zicam pulled the swabs for adultsand children off the shelvesbut not the nasal gel. I went to my ENT and hesaid the Zicam had basically“FRIED” my olfactory nerveand the results are mostlikely permanent. He put meon a strong dose of a steroidcalled Prednisone in hopes ofrecovering ANY bit of the nervedamage but he told me to “takethis and pray.” He said he hadread about the side effects ofZicam and couldn’t believe itis still on the shelf. It isn’t FDAapproved.I am taking the Prednisone andpraying but nothing is happening. ILITERALLY CANNOT SMELL ORTASTE ANYTHING! I can tell iffoods are hot or cold, I can tellthe consistency and I can faintlydetect if it is salty but that is it. I don’t want this to happen toANYONE else! If you have Zicam inyour medicine cabinet –THROW ITAWAY! ---SusanEditor’s CommentsI did some fact checking and foundthis press release from the FDA toverify that the story above is indeedpossible.FDA NEWS RELEASEFor Immediate Release: June 16, 2009Media Inquiries:Siobhan DeLancey,301-796-4668,siobhan.delancey@fda.hhs.govConsumer Inquiries:888-INFO-FDAFDA AdvisesConsumers Not ToUse Certain ZicamCold RemediesIntranasal ZincProduct Linked toLoss of Sense ofSmellThe U.S. Food andDrug Administrationtoday advisedconsumers tostop using threeproducts marketedover-the-counter ascold remediesbecause they areassociated with theloss of sense ofsmell (anosmia).Anosmia maybe long-lastingor permanent. The products are:--Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel--Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs--Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, KidsSize (a discontinued product)The FDA has received more than130 reports of loss of sense of smellassociated with the use of these threeZicam products. Do youever have days like this? Days whereyou just want to scream and say,“Can’t someone take this pain away?”If You’re Complaining, You’re NotLooking for an AnswerMy pain and circumstances could bea lot worse. I could be just like someof the people that have so much painso much of the time that they haveto smoke marijuana to stop the pain. That must be tough because thenthey have to buy enough of it to havearound in their times of need, makingthem potential crime victims. Withnew recipes, it’s possible now to get ahigh enough dose from eating a lacedlollipop or brownie or even cup of tea. This option isn’t for me although itcertainly can work for others. Some pain-relieving methods thatworked in the past may work now. Forexample, hanging upside down alwaystakes the stress off the muscles in myneck, the source of my pain. Only 2minutes upside down is enough to gofrom excruciating pain to no pain atall. There’s just one little problem –getting the gravity boots over the chinup bar and then getting up from thehanging position without traumatizingthe rest of the body. Agility in this areanever seemed to come easy.Taking three capsules of Vitamin Ealso has helped in the past. It takesabout two hours to reduce the pain.Drinking more water seems to help aswell. A few cups are ineffective butfour or more cups can cut the pain.Exercising on the K1 machine alsohelps. This is a triangular oscillatingsystem that shakes the body at acertain frequency that is thought toalign the cells with the frequencythey have when healthy. In studies, endorphins and enkephalins wereproduced in people that used themachine. It takes about 10 minutes ofshaking for it to work. Stepping off theK1, the pain will be gone.Where Would We Be Without Friends? My friend Laurie sent me somethingnew to try for neck pain. I reservedit for a night just like tonight. It’sa supplement called Eezapein, onethat is taken by cancer patients whohave greater amounts of pain than Ido with my neck. Their pain couldbe throughout their entire body andrelentless 24/7. Laurie’s husband hada protruding disk in his neck and wasable to avoid surgery and decrease painby using this product. If Eezapein isgood enough for cancer patients, I’lltry it.It’s 7:50 p.m. and I’ll turn the burnerwith the kettle of boiling water on.(You did know that microwaves areharmful for your health?)The packet of Eezapein goes intothe coffee cup and the boiling waterfills the cup. Now it’s just a matter ofwaiting for it to cool. It’s 8:00 p.m. now and I’m ready todrink the drink. You may be wonderingabout the taste. It’s not bad-tasting andit’s not sweet. I’d rate it as neutral anddon’t think anyone would gag on itat all. I drink it down and wait to seewhat is happening to my neck pain.8:03 p.m. Pain still there.8:04 p.m. Pain is getting lighter.8:06 p.m. Pain is gone! How couldthat be? That worked so fast and it’s adrugless method of relieving pain. Waita minute, maybe this is temporary…8:25 p.m. Pain is still gone totally. Ican move my neck in every direction. It’s as if I had no pain at all, ever. What’s in it?The ingredients include: Notoginseng,Cnidium, Red Sage, Red Peony,Astragalus, Cyperus, Circumarhizome, Carthamus flower,Codonopsis, White Peony, Lotus Node,Hawthorn fruit, Licorice Root andStevia. This is a totally natural herbalproduct that uses a lot of Chineseherbs. No sugar. No wheat. No drugs. No artificial coloring. No milk. Nocorn. No soy. No preservatives. This ismy type of product, fitting in with myideology about health. And it works. Those cancer patients really had asecret there that they weren’t sharingwith anyone else. They knew how tostop excruciating pain with a simpleglass of herbal tea.I asked Laurie who else has benefitedfrom this Eezapein, which isappropriately named. She said thosewith intractable pain, shingles, tooth pain (before they got to thedentist), back pain, and headaches.I mentioned we should add neckmuscle pain to the list. The pain stayed away for 25 hours, then returned at a very low level. I wasthen able to go visit my chiropractor.I remained pain-free for fouradditional days. For more information, visitwww.immuneenhance.com. healthBy Dr. Donna Schwontkowski (ret. D.C., M.S. Nutrtition, Master Herbalist)Article submitted by NewsMaxhealthHow to Talk to YourDaughter AboutMenstruationIn many cultures, people celebratethe day when their children becomeadults with a coming of age party. These parties honor the transitionfrom childhood to adulthood. Forgirls, the day that she becomes anadult can be linked to the start ofmenstruation for girls. The type of celebration and the age atwhich these parties are celebrated vary, depending on the culture. In othercultures, stories, songs, and dancesare part of a big celebration for girls.Movies may also be incorporated intothe big party. In these movies, a youngcharacter or characters start out on ajourney of personal growth and by theend of the story, have developed insome way. This is usually through theundertaking of responsibility, or bylearning a lesson. In western society, there isn’t much ofa celebration for girls as they becomeyoung women. With little emphasis onthe transition, children are not madeaware of the importance of the event ofa girl’s first period. In the 1950s through late 1960s, thebig sanitary products companies suchas Kotex, Always, and Tampax createdgirls’ first menstruation kits thatwere passed out to school girls rightaround the time that they would beexperiencing their first period. At thattime, the age of a girl’s first period wasbetween 13 and 15 years old. Now, theage of a girl’s first period has droppedto as low as 8 and 10 years old, makingit more difficult to approach the girlscollectively.Celebrating a girl’s first menstruationis an important right of passage.Making it into a big occasion is away of telling your girl that it’s agreat thing to be female, which canencourage her own acceptance of herfemininity. At a time when young girls’bodies are developing, this is critical toher self image.Talking to your daughter aboutmenstruation doesn’t have to bedifficult. Here are some ideas to getyou started:1. Call three or four of your femalefriends and plan the event. Inputfrom other women is very helpful,as they will share their own storiesof how this day was celebrated intheir own life.2. Plan the event on your own. Thiscan be simple, such as schedulinga nice weekend together withyour daughter to a retreat or evensomething such as a special brunch, special dinner, or even specialbreakfast in bed.3. Bring gifts to the event. Everyoneappreciates gifts and in our culture, gifts are symbolic of specialoccasions. The gifts you bringshould be related either symbolicallyor physically to the occasion athand. For example, roses that are notyet fully blooming can be symbolicof the girl turning into a woman. You could even fill her room withroses; now that is a very memorableevent! Another idea could be a giftbasket with all types of femininehygiene products. This will offer herthe opportunity to select the onesthat she likes best.4. Talking to her about the actualmenstrual period is easier than ever. The schools have already startedthe process. Make a list of the keypoints you wish to cover in advance. The next article will address that.Making this day very special for yourdaughter will have many positivebenefits and ramifications for yourdaughter for the rest of her life.Next month: Find out more on thisimportant topic! If you have any special stories thatyou want to share with us about whathappened during your own coming ofage, be sure to send them to editor@healthfitness.us.FAST Test forStroke SymptomsDid you know strokes are thethird-leading cause of death inAmericans, and leave hundreds ofthousands more disabled?Almost five million Americans havehad a stroke at some point in theirlives, and an additional quarter of amillion Americans will suffer strokesthis year alone. In many cases, a stroke occurs withoutwarning. Yet, for a number of peoplethere will be signs. Unfortunately, many people, especially women, ignore them. Before the big one hits, there are usually several episodes ofmild neurological symptoms, such assudden numbness of one side of theface or an arm. This may last onlyseconds and then pass.I describe other symptoms in myspecial report.Other people often spot the problemfirst. They may notice that one side ofthe personís face seems to sag, or thatthey make little sense when speaking.Sometimes the person isnít walkingright. Ignoring these symptoms canlead to disaster.Be aware of common thoughts somestroke victims have had prior to astroke:• I must have been leaning on my arm.• I must be hungry.• I can’t think of the words I want. And get to know the symptoms Idescribe so you can take advantageof the window of opportunity to treata stroke. To help people recognizethe symptoms of stroke quickly, TheStroke Association has come up withthe FAST (face, arms, speech, timing)test:Face: Ask the person to smile. If theupper or lower face on one side isweak or does not move, it may indicatea stroke.Arms: Ask your loved one to raisetheir arms out straight. Weakness inone arm is a sign of a stroke.Speech: Have them say a simplesentence. Garbled speech, wordsearching or nonsense speech canindicate a stroke.Timing: Call 911 if any one of theseis present. While they do not alwaysindicate a stroke, time is of theessence.Taking an aspirin when symptoms firstoccur, for instance, can prevent moststrokes, but it is important to use thistime to get to your doctor for a properworkup. You can also cut your risk of a deadlystroke if you make sure your bloodpressure is under control. In my reportEliminate Hypertension Forever, I giveyou vital information on how to curehigh blood pressure without drugs. Idetail nutrients that will lower yourrisk of developing high blood pressureas well as other medical conditionsthat can lead to stroke. For more information go to:www.newsmax.com38 January Edition 2010January Edition 2010 39
