President’s MessageDear Fellow Members,While we are in the process of reviewing the fiscalyear, I would like to ask our fellow members to revisita key component of our Amended By-Laws to wit: “… to establish and maintain a club to promote socialintercourse, and to provide a place for members tomeet, engage in sports activities, and have socialgatherings, recreation and entertainment.” ( Section 2.Purpose. Amended By-Laws as of May 5, 2004 ). All ofour daily tasks, development projects, tournaments andevents were carried out in pursuit of this mandate. Yoursupport and cooperation in these endeavours were bothinspiring and invigorating as attained in the followingachievements:The Facilities Oversight Committee (“FOC”) took thelead in implementing a series of projects aimed atkeeping the Club responsive to the evolving needs ofits members. At the start of the fiscal year, FOC wasworking in coordination with the House Committeefor the Technical Study on the water requirementand alternative water source of the club or the graywater facility project. The first quarter of 2012 sawthe commencement of the construction work on therefurbishing of the Main lounge and its adjacent areas. In November 2011 the 25-meter pool renovationproject was completed and in that same month thenewly renovated facility including a major section of theCogon Village was opened. The latter proved to be a hitamong members and their guests.I would like to yet again congratulate the FOC for thecontinuing good work. This group of dedicated membershas been together now for six years, its first project wasthe Centennial Buildings including the New Lobby, theLibrary, and the improvement of the Sports Lounge andSports Café. I would like to particularly acknowledgethe hard and dedicated work of the three architects onthat committee: its current Chairman, Director AlfredWieneke, Mr. Bong Recio, and the priceless WillieCoscolluela. Before the end of the first quarter of 2012 the Clubhired the services of a new Security Agency, BluForce. The mission order of the agency is to curb abuses bynon-members, increase vigilance and ensure that theClub is safe and secure for all members and their guests.Expect implementation of a new security system in theclub by the third quarter of this year with the use ofdigital technology.June 31,2012 witnessed the successful conclusion ofthe Collective Bargaining Agreement which dovetailedwith the launching of an audacious program of achievinga culture of excellence in the Club through a strongand effective partnership between management andemployees. In terms of re-aligning positions andeliminating redundancies, the Club right-sized itsemployee count by 47%.During the Board Year 2011-2012, we welcomed atotal of 102 proprietary members. We encourage themto continue enjoying our dining and sports facilities. Wewould appreciate constructive feedback from our newmembers. On January, 2012, the Board of Directors approved theproposed Audit Committee Mandate and Internal AuditCharter. The Audit Committee Mandate was based onthe Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) Code ofCorporate Governance while the Internal Audit Charterwas based on the Institute of Internal Auditor’s (IIA)Standards. Both the Mandate and the Charter will allowthe Club management to make well-informed decisions.Providing ease and convenience for Club memberswas the goal behind the Management InformationSystem’s roll-out of the online billing system, increasedand accelerated internet access, security, surveillanceand access systems. Even our Senior Citizens who are3President’s Message

entitled to discounts can avail of this privilege once theypre-register.Sports and Games took a leap forward with increasedinterest and enthusiasm in Archery, Tennis, Badmintonand Golf. New and improved facilities and equipmentwere instrumental in pushing players to level up andsustain their game with the encouragement of expertcoaches and tutors. This generated more than 34Min revenues. The 2012 Polo Season was a period of colourfulcompetitions that took on a global perspective. Asidefrom the traditional events, the Season featured thefirst Harbour Centre Polo Cup and the President’s Cupstaged in partnership with the Argentine Embassyand the Chaîne de Rôtisseurs. The Season took on aninternational flavour with the Princes of Brunei and othervisiting foreign players and officials seeing action. ThePhil-UK Equestrian Cup on its 5th year was held onOctober 23, foreign coaches were on hand to guideour riders, the Philippine team competed in Koreaand a Malaysian expert gave his services pro bono forimprovements in our arenas.Even with the temporary closure of the Main Lounge, the Sports Café, office function rooms, and Nanten,Food and Beverage showed remarkable performancein tandem with InterPro, our new concessionaire andthe other restaurants and coffee shops that continueto serve the Club membership with more than 54M inrevenues. Our new concessionaire, Interpro Food Specialist, Inc.,was given the task to operate the Food and Beverageservices of the Club following Board approval inSeptember, 2011. To ensure efficiency, a considerableamount of time and effort was spent by F &B in trainingservice and kitchen staff. To ensure the highest possiblelevel of quality and safety, the Club Managementand the F & B Committee will continue to work withthe Societe Generale de Surveilance ( SGS ) as anindependent testing body to provide testing and verifyfood safety practices under local and internationalregulations. Your continued patronage deservesconstant improvements and high levels of excellence. The Club has embarked on a Go Green campaign.Spearheaded by PR and Communications, the wastemanagement and energy conservation project includesa paperless drive that promoted online viewing of billingstatements, reduction on the use of plastic and prudentutilization of lights and air-conditioning units. Alongsidethe efforts of the Facilities Oversight Committee, theGrounds sub-committee and the House Directorate, thegreening initiative traces its roots to the Amended By-Laws that states “ … the preservation and enhancementof the prestige of the Club thru the maintenance andexpansion of its facilities. “( Article I, Section 3 ).Membership dues were at 95M, transfer fees at 33.9Mand other revenues brought in 32.6M. Total increasein assets was mainly due to increase in the fair marketvalue of our restricted fund by Php4.6M and an increasein our Property and Equipment account by Php45M aswe finished the renovation of 25-Meter Pool and CogonVillage.Financially, the Board Year proved to be a challenge. The temporary closure of the Main Lounge, SportsCafé, function rooms, Nanten, part of the CogonVillage and the closure of our deep well system plusother administrative expenses negatively impacted ourearnings.I am optimistic that with all the resources, time andpatience we poured into the massive reconstructionand upgrade you have been witnessing, it will eventuallypay off. Already membership response has been bothheartening and supportive. The 2011-2012 Board of Directors would like torecognize the foresight, commitment and persistenceof the past Boards whose vision led to the planning, implementation and realization of the various programsand projects Club members have started to appreciateor have been enjoying for quite some time. In thesame breath, the Board would like to give due creditto the various Committees, sub-committees and theManagement Team for making these visions possible. My personal thanks go to my co-Directors, particularlythe four departing members: Bobby de Ocampo, ShielaRamos, Bambina Buenaventura, and Jimmy Laya. This Club has and will always be, run by ourCommittees, each of which is headed by a servingDirector. To these men and women I dedicatethis Report.ROMAN A.V. AZANZA, JR.4President’s Message

TRIBUTERenato Paras1926- 2012A Life Well SpentAs shared by Mrs. Aurea “Aby” Paras, Johnip Cua,and Bert ManlapitPeople often say that Rene wasalready a “legend”, even whenhe was still alive. His merepresence exudes credibility andintegrity that inspires youngexecutives in the corporateworld. He has a witty sense ofhumor, but some would claimhe is as strict as he is witty. He could be your mentor andtormentor at the same time. Buthe is the man who always bringsout the best in people for theirtime to “shine”.Raised in Paco, Manila, Rene did not have a privileged life.He lost their father at the age of three. In elementary, hewent to a public school, moving to Araullo in high school. Tohelp his widowed mother, he started to work at the age of15 as a “runner boy” to President Jose P. Laurel during theJapanese occupation. In college, he majored in Accountingat the Far Eastern University (FEU). Rene was a brilliant man.He passed and topped the CPA board exams even before hegraduated. He was later sent by his alma mater as a scholarto Columbia University in New York, where he got an awardfor excellence in Auditing. To Rene, excellence was not anoption. It was the norm. And he expected and demanded itfrom everyone else he related with. He personified excellence.Rene was respected and admired for being the total personthat he was in things that mattered most in life—academically, professionally, spiritually, socially, and as a family-centeredperson.He was a scholar right from the very first time he steppedinside a school and right till he graduated in New York. Asa way of giving back, he taught accounting at FEU and laterbecame a member of the Board of Trustees until the time ofhis death.BY 2011-2012BY 2010-2011BY 1994-1995BY 1989-1990BY 1986-1987BY 1985-1986Member, Audit CommitteeVice Chairman, Audit CommitteeMember, Membership DirectorateMember, Townhouse DirectorateDirector & TreasurerMember, Membership DirectorateMember, Labor DirectorateMember, Finance DirectorateChairman, Treasury DirectorateChairman, Scholarship Program CommitteeMember, Finance DirectorateMember, Treasury DirectorateRene spent most of his career in Procter & Gamble where heworked for 39 years. So, he made sure all his children andgrandchildren learn how to swim because he himself did notknow how. He became a Proprietary member of the ManilaPolo Club in May 1980 and Life member in August 2010. Heserved in various committees and directorates of the Club. ForRene, family comes first no matter what and the Club playeda role in keeping the family together. It is a place for them torelax, bond and entertain guests. Even though Rene retiredabout fifteen years ago, he still remained very active in all ofhis clubs, attending meetings and gatherings. He lived a very simple, comfortable life. His only luxury isto travel with his family at least once a year. A very sociallyresponsible man, a part of his earnings goes to differentcharities every year. As a husband, he is very demonstrative ofhis love and affection. He is very thoughtful to everyone andremembers every birthday and death anniversary of friends.Rene died a peaceful death and did not suffer too much or toolong. Indeed he spent his life well not only for himself but foreveryone around him.26TRIBUTE
