Title: Methodological and experimental studies of data assimilationtechniques on the convection-permitting scaleVolker WulfmeyerSummary:Data assimilation (DA) on the convection‐permitting scale is a key research topic inatmospheric sciences. On the one hand, this is due to the expected high positive impact on theprediction of high‐impact weather events, particularly in terrain with complex land‐surface andorographic properties. On the other hand, severe challenges occur due to non‐linearity of modelphysics and non‐Gaussian error stastistics of model background and observations. We present anoverview of DA techniques which have the potential to improve the forecast skill using convectionpermittingmodels and ingesting many observations which have not been routinely used yet. We arefocusing on variants of the stochastic EnKF and compare this with the expected performance of3DVAR. Hybrid combinations of variational and ensemble‐based techniques and the consideration ofnon‐Gaussian statistics are also discussed.-476-
