PCA Bulletin February 2010 - Australian Education Union, Victorian

18827 February July . 2009 2010WELCOME BACKMary Bluett, PresidentWelcome back – and what a start it has been! The launch of the Federal My School website certainly shook up what was otherwise a fairly smooth start to the schoolyear. See Schools Bulletin sent today. We are keen to continue to get feedback from AEU principals about ‘My School’.The year ahead will also be a busy one – with a State election on November 27 and a Federal election likely before thatdate. The AEU is preparing both state and federal campaigns and you will hear a lot more about that later.EXIT STRATEGYMeredith Peace, Deputy PresidentThe Department has proceeded with the Teacher Career Transition Program, otherwise known as the ‘Exit Strategy’,launched late last year. The program provided an ‘opportunity for those who have lost the passion for teaching to leavethe profession, retrain and establish new careers’.183 offers were made in early January and just over 160 of these have been accepted. Over 300 teachers expressedinterest in taking the package and those who ‘missed out’ didn’t meet the eligibility criteria, were difficult to replace orwere not recommended by their Principal.Very importantly, the Department are now in the process of ensuring that the teachers leaving the system are replaced byan eligible fixed term employee being made ongoing, which is something the AEU achieved in the Agreementnegotiations. Principals will receive a memorandum soon outlining an Expression of Interest process for vacant positionsfor eligible fixed term staff in schools where staff have taken ‘packages’.BUSHFIRE, FLOOD OR OTHER SEVERE WEATHER EVENTMeredith Peace, Deputy PresidentThe Department has released a memorandum (S005-2010) outlining procedures for employees when and if SevereWeather Events occur. This includes the new Code Red rating which will result in designated schools and other earlychildhood education settings being closed. The AEU is pleased that the Department has continued to support their employees in providing leave with pay where anemployee is prevented from attending his or her school or workplace because of bushfire, flood or other severe weatherevent.Members, and in particular Principals, whose schools have a Code Red rating or are in areas of severe bushfire threatshould make themselves familiar with the provisions of this memorandum. In addition members who are involved involunteer organisations who assist during severe weather events are also provided with emergency services leave.Page 1 of 4
