And because of thereduced stretch in fluorocarbon, you will get better hookups.Mistake #2: Making short castsThe longer the cast, the more timea bait has to dig deeper, achieve itsmaximum depth and stay there longer.Anglers should make sure theirreel spools are full and the tensionknob adjusted properly to maximizecasting distance.“I like to position my boat so thatI’m throwing with the wind at someangle, whenever possible,” explainedHorton. “Many of the deepdivers are heavy enough that youcan really launch them, which is toBill Nichloson, from Buckhannon, shot a 49 1/2” spread caribou.Get Ready For Hunting Season With Our Large Selection OfNow HandlingFranchiReloadingBenelliSuppliesNew and Used GunsGlockKimberLeupold - Zeiss ScopesGold - Platinum - Silver - Jewelry - WatchesTools - Electronics - Archery - Safes - And More!Buy - Sell - Trade - LoansLay-Aways AvailableTwo Locations To Serve Your Needs515 Division St. 3410 3408 Emerson Dudley Av. Bear HuntingGame Commission officials pointout that one of the biggest mistakesbear hunters make is failing to locateareas with good fall food supplies– acorns, beechnuts, apples, corn – before the hunting seasonand overlooking areas of densecover where bears like to hide.“Signs to look for while scoutinginclude droppings; bedding areas, which are scratched out depressions, usually at the base of a tree orlog; and active trails with tracks,”said Mark Ternent, Game Commissionblack bear biologist. “In beechstands, look for fresh claw markson tree trunks indicating that bearsare feeding in the area, and in oakstands look for fresh droppings thatare almost completely composedof acorns bits. Either of these signssuggests bears are feeding nearbyand, if food conditions are right, they will likely still be there comehunting season. A good time toscout is early November, so youcan assess local mast conditions.”CHAINSAW SCUPTURESWABASH TRADING POSTDeer CornChainsawCarving On Site101 Front StreetWEST UNION, WV(304) 873-2319E-Mail: wabashtradingpost@gmail.comHunting & Fishing Supplies• Rods & Reels (Reel Repair)• High End Air Gun Rifles• Ammunition• Knives - Handmade Knives• Fishing Tackle - Lures• Live Bait - Consignment SalesOPEN 9am-6pm Mon - Fri9am to 5pm Sat Sun 1pm to 4pmOther bear hunting tips include:Look for bears in the thickest coveryou can find, such as: swamps andbogs, mountain laurel/rhododendronthickets, north-facing slopes, regenerating timber-harvest areas,wind-blown areas with lots ofdowned trees, and remote sectionsof river bottoms. .22 Special Purpose AmmoThere are several ways to organizeany ammunition “roundup.”It could, for example, be listed bymanufacturer. Organizing the various.22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire(WMR) loads by manufacturerhas one obvious advantage, in thatnot all brands are available in allareas, so the reader can skip to thebrand(s) he or she can actually purchase.Reese Bennett landed a 4 poundsmallmouth bass. The most difficult way to presentthe information, unfortunately, strikes me as one of the most useful. That is, to list the various loadsby the purpose for which they aremost useful. So I am going to try todo both. I will list each brand, andthen in sub headings the purposesfor which the various loads are bestsuited. In the case of .22 WMR ammunition, that is basically varmint hunting, small game hunting, plinking, and self-defense. Some of thesecreatures are larger and tougherthan most small game animals andpreserving an edible carcass is nota consideration. The small predators include coyote, fox, bobcat, opossum, raccoon, and similar size carnivores. Theseare tougher and harder to put downthan varmints, but are still withinthe capability of the .22 WMR cartridgewithin its maximum pointblank range of about 125 yards ifthe right bullet is used. The loads most commonly recommendedfor shooting varmintsand small predators are the 30-40grain jacketed hollow point (JHP)bullets. This type of ammunitionprovides the greatest killing poweravailable in .22 WMR caliber.Small game huntingSmall game refers to edible creaturessuch as squirrels and rabbits. The key ingredient in small gameammunition is adequate killingpower to insure a quick, clean killwithout blowing the game apart.Headshots are best when huntingSPENCER'STAXIDERMY304-824-3745OVER 44 39 YEARSEXPERIENCEBIRDS, FISH, ANTLERSLIFE-SIZE MOUNTS, GAMEHEADSWEST HAMLIN,WVACCROSS FROM THE POST OFFICEFULL TIME TAXIDERMY SERVICEATV’sMotorcyclesRt. 33 EastBuckhannon, WV304-472-4824www.supersmittys.comsmall game, as no edible meat isthen wasted. These bullets do notexpand at all, and often zip rightthrough the animal’s body, creatinga fatal wound but allowing the animalto escape before it succumbs. Those collecting fur bearing animalssometimes use these loads,as they do minimal damage to thepelt.Good choices for small gamehunting include the Remington andPMC 40 grain jacketed soft point(JSP) bullets, Federal 50 grain JHPbullet, and Winchester 45 graincopper plated lead Dynapoint bullet. These expand but are less destructivethan the standard 40 grainJHP bullets.Plinking/Practice“Plinking” refers to informal shootingat casual targets. Some ofthe most common include Neccocandy wafers, fired shotgun shells, wooden matches, jar lids, paperplates, potatoes, and all manner ofpaper targets. There are even paperReagan Lynch, from Arnoldsburg, shot a 8 point last season.targets made specifically for plinking.Unfortunately, glass bottles arealso common plinking targets, butshould never be shot; broken glasswill inevitably become a problemfor someone. My favorite plinkingtarget is the ordinary “clay pigeon”used by trap and skeet shooters. They are reactive, safe, fragile anddegradable.Any ammunition can be used forpractice and plinking. Cost is oftenthe primary consideration dueto the high volume of ammunitionexpended. Personally, in .22 WMR,my standard 40 grain JHP huntingammunition is also my generalpurpose, practice and plinking ammunition.Plinking and practice areprobably the best uses for the .22WMR FMJ bullets.Special purpose ammunitionThere are also loads designedfor special purposes. An examplewould be the CCI .22 WMR shotload. CCI recommends their shotshells for pest control, which Itake to mean killing rats, mice, andsnakes at very close range (under15 feet). The Winchester.22 WRF load uses a Lubaloy platedlead flat nose (LFN) bullet andis fine for use in revolvers.Self defense22 WMR ammunition is not specificallymanufactured for selfdefense,so you will not find selfdefense loads in any of the manufacturers’brands listed below. This is because while there aresome “deep concealment” handguns(notably the mini-revolversfrom North American Arms) thatare chambered for the .22 WMRcartridge, no rimfire cartridge isordinarily recommended for selfdefense. The gun makers are giv-Hillbilly Hunting BeaglesAKC Pups & Hunting DogsGarmin GPS • Diamond Deluxe • Tri-TronicsKing • Easy Loader • Vinyl Flooring Wire For KennelsDavid Dewees (304) 545-3820New RestaurantBARKER’S“ONE STOP DOES IT ALL”Small Engine RepairComputer AlignmentHardware DeliGame Checking Rt. 47Smithville, WV304-477-33412178 Fishers Ridge, Kenna, WV 25248ing the customers what they want, while the ammo makers are constrainedby the physical reality thatno .22 WMR cartridge is a “manstopper.”While no .22 WMR load is reallyadequate for self-defense, anygun is better than no gun at all.
