Sparkplug lighthouses are given their nickname because of their shape.• Cost $45,000 to construct in 1896. ProgramsProgramsArchitectural & Engineering DesignStudents are prepared for technicianlevel work assisting architects, engineers,and contractors. This program offers avariety of drafting/design disciplines, andprovides students with individual choicesof specialization including architectural,mechanical and electro-mechanicalinterests. Also available is a certificateprogram in Marine Design.Automotive TechnologyDesigned to prepare skilled techniciansto work in the automotive industry, thisprogram involves general education aswell as automotive lecture and laboratoryinstruction focusing on state-of-theartproducts. Cooperative education atdealerships is also offered.behavioral health & human servicesStudents are prepared with the necessaryknowledge and skills for employment and/or future study in the human service field.Successful graduates work with disablingmental health issues, developmentaldisabilities, substance abuse, and otherbehavioral health conditions.BiotechnologyStudents learn the fundamentals ofbiology and chemistry and gain anadvanced understanding of relatedsubfields like cellular biology, genetics,and microbiology. Students work withDNA, cells, enzymes and other biologicalagents in hands-on laboratory settings, andsummer internships at outside laboratoriesare offered. Career and researchopportunities include animal sciences,biomedical technologies, immunology,pharmaceutics, forensics, plus marine andenvironmental science.Business AdministrationStudents are provided with a foundationin general business practices, leadershipconcepts, and microcomputer applications.In addition to acquiring skills in accounting,finance, sales, and operations, studentsenhance their ability to write, think, work ingroups, solve problems and build confidencefor successful careers.Cardiovascular TechnologyThis program provides graduates withthe skills necessary to work with medicalprofessionals in cardiac catheterizationlaboratories, operating rooms, non-invasivelaboratories, and echocardiographydepartments.Communications and New MediaStudents are prepared for careers usingtechnology to create and enhancecommunication through the integrationof visual, audio, and web to presentdesign solutions. Students can choose tospecialize by selecting from a flexible menuof advanced curriculum options includingAnimation & Gaming, Digital Imaging& Design, Video & Audio Production, orWebsite Production.COMPOSITE TECHNOLOGYThis program provides students withboth theoretical knowledge and practicalskills essential for careers in compositemanufacturing industries includingintroductory computer-aided drafting anddesign (CADD) and composite materials andprocesses for manufacturing.Computer TechnologyStudents concentrate on the three majorareas in the information technology industry:programming, networking, and computerhardware/operating systems. The programprovides students with a broad-based educationpreparing them for a career in the informationtechnology field.Construction TechnologyThis program provides technical and extensivehands-on experience in residential constructionand light commercial construction preparingits graduates for a rewarding career in theconstruction industry. Also offered through theConstruction Technology program is a certificateprogram in Building Science and Sustainabilitythat provides a one year in-depth instruction andhands-on experience in all aspects of energy useand efficiency in the typical <strong>Maine</strong> residentialstructure.Criminal JusticeStudents are provided with the skills andabilities they need to succeed in dynamic andrewarding careers. Students will find careeropportunities in law enforcement, forensics,corrections, probation/parole, private securityand investigations, and juvenile and adultprotective services.Culinary ArtsAt the only American Culinary Federationaccredited program in <strong>Maine</strong>, students areinstructed in food preparation and servicecovering all fundamentals including meats,poultry, fish, vegetables, sauces, soups, breadand pastry baking, desserts, specialty cooking,dining room service, and more. Annual Europeanstudy tours to Austria and Italy are offered asprogram electives.Dietetic TechnologyThis program educates and trains generalistdietetic technicians to compete in the rapidlychanging healthcare community. Graduatesare prepared to work under the supervision of aregistered dietitian in designing specialized diets,teaching healthy eating habits, and managinginstitutional food services and nutrition programs.Early Childhood EducationThis program offers students courseworkcombining theory and practical experience toprepare them for immediate entry into the fieldor transfer to a four-year institution. Graduateswill meet state licensing standards for teachingin a variety of settings.Electrical Engineering TechnologiesThese programs provide the education andtraining needed to install, maintain andtroubleshoot electrical devices and equipment.Students explore topics such as basic circuits,wiring practices, electronics, programmablelogic controllers, sensors, hydraulics, motors–devices and principles used in all manufacturingprocesses. In addition, students are exposed tothe practice and regulations of residential andcommercial wiring and renewable energy.Emergency Medical Services/ParamedicineWithin the field of Emergency Medical Services(EMS), paramedics provide advanced levelcare in the pre-hospital environment underthe direction of a physician. Employmentopportunities are available with municipaland private ambulances, fire departments,hospitals, clinics, and in industrial settings.Fire ScienceThe Fire Science Technology program,available at either the South Portlandcampus or our satellite campus at Eastern<strong>Maine</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> in Bangor, isdesigned to provide both pre-service andin-service students with sound technicaland academic experiences, enablingthem to assume positions of responsibilityas members of fire departments or astechnical and supervisory employees ofindustrial firms and insurance companies.HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY(HIT)This program is designed to prepare medicaloffice managers, work-flow practitioners,clinicians, and IT professionals to manageelectronic medical records. This programincludes lecture and laboratory classesas well as real world application throughan internship. The HIT program providesstudents with both the theoretical knowledgeand practical skills that are essential forcareers in today’s health care industries.Heating, Air Conditioning,Refrigeration, & PLUMBINGThis department offers an Associate inApplied Science degree with two options:Heating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration,and Heating & Plumbing. Certificates inPlumbing, Heating, and Refrigeration &Air Conditioning are also offered.Heavy Equipment OperationsThis certificate program is designed toproduce operators trained on earth-movingequipment such as bulldozers, backhoes,excavators, and graders. Training takesplace both on lab simulators as well as onan actual lab operation site.HorticultureThis program prepares graduates to workin a wide variety of occupations, such astree, shrub and perennial plant nurseries,arboreta, greenhouses, garden centers,landscape contracting and design, municipalparks, arboriculture, turf production, golfcourse management, lawn and groundsmaintenance, and florist shops.Integrated ManufacturingTechnologyThe program offers a two-year associatedegree program with options in PrecisionMachining and Precision Welding, as wellas certificate in welding, and an AdvancedCertificate in Multi-Axis Machining.Liberal StudiesThis program is designed for students whoplan to transfer to four-year colleges anduniversities or who have not yet identifieda primary field of study. The curriculum isbuilt on a foundation of general educationclasses, supplemented with elective coursesthat develop depth in the prerequisiteknowledge required for further study atthe baccalaureate level. Concentrationsinclude: Art, Biological Sciences,Elementary Education (K-8), English,History, Mathematics, Political Science,Psychology, Science, Secondary Education(7-12), Social Work, and Sociology.Lodging and RestaurantManagementThis program responds to the developingneeds of the <strong>Maine</strong> hospitality andtourism industry by producing graduatesqualified for introductory, supervisory, andmanagement positions in the lodging andrestaurant industry.Marine Biology and OceanographyStudents are provided with the academicbackground and applied skills requiredfor employment as research assistantsand technicians in a variety of aquaticand environmental fields. The curriculumemphasizes hands-on laboratory andfield procedures preparing students forcareers in aquatic research and ecosystemmanagement.Medical AssistingStudents are prepared to perform dutiesand responsibilities in a variety of medicalsettings. The flexible curriculum allowsstudents to focus on different concentrations,including combined clinical andadministrative skills, or administrative skills.NursingStudents are prepared to become registerednurses at the associate degree level andtrained to administer nursing care toindividuals, families and communities ina variety of health care settings. Uponcompletion of the program, graduates areeligible to take the NCLEX Registered Nurse(RN) licensure examination.PRE-ENGINEERINGThis two year program prepares studentsto transfer to the chemical, civil, electrical,or mechanical engineering programs atthe University of <strong>Maine</strong>. Students focus ondeveloping a fundamental knowledge ofphysics, chemistry, and mathematics, and anintroductionto engineering.Radiation TherapyThis program utilizes rapidly evolvingtechnology witha combination of radiation therapy andgeneral education courses. Solid clinicalfoundation with selected medical centers inthe area and an emphasis on independentdecision-making and critical-thinking skillswill challenge students.RadiographyThis program provides students with theknowledge of not only human anatomy andradiographic procedures, but also, radiationphysics, principles of imaging, radiationprotection, and quality assurance to performradiographic procedures.Respiratory TherapyRespiratory Therapy is an Allied Healthspecialty involved with evaluation, treatment,management, diagnosis and preventive careof patients with cardiopulmonary problems.The respiratory therapist isa life-support specialist.Surgical TechnologyA certified Surgical Technologist (CST)works with the surgeon, anesthesiologistand certified registered nurse, deliveringdirect patient care before, during and aftersurgery and performing functions and tasksthat provide a safe environment for surgicalcare contributing to the efficiency of theoperating team.
