Rationale for the 200 DayAcademic CalendarKevin Baxter, Ed.D.Superintendent of Elementary SchoolsArchdiocese of Los Angeles

Current State of Catholic Schools• Increasing numbers of lay staff• Tuition rising –• Increased focus on fundraising• Still undervalued of true cost at most schools• Geographically close schools• Increased competition with other Catholic schools & charter schools• Shifting parent priorities• Larger percentage of non-Catholic students• Principal duties expanding

Context• Archdiocese of Philadelphia: 1.5 million Catholics/68,000 K-12 Catholic School Students• Archdiocese of Los Angeles: 4.6 million Catholics/80,000 K-12 Catholic School Students• If Los Angeles had the same proportion of students to Catholics that Philadelphia has there wouldbe 208,000 students in Catholic schools in Los Angeles.• Key Point #1: We are grossly underserving the Catholic population in LosAngeles with our current Catholic school enrollment.• Quality schools attract parents and students – even in low income areas, a strong leader whocreates and develops a quality program tends to lead to solid enrollment.• Key Point #2: In order to create long term growth and sustainability schoolsneed to have strong leaders who focus on establishing clear Catholic identity, rigorous Academics and active Stewardship.• The original model for the Catholic parochial school is not sustainable in many locations and theadvent of new technologies requires new approaches to how we govern and educate students inCatholic schools.• Key point #3: Catholic schools need to adapt and innovate to meet the needsof the 21 st century family and student. The ways that have worked in the pastwill not in the future so change is a requirement for growth.

 Areas of Focus• Leadership• Identify, Develop, Nurture and Retain• Faith• Faculty Formation• Pastor Relationships• Excellence• Technology Integration• Stewardship• Fiscal Management• Enrollment Recruitment and Retention

Catholic Schools and Faith• Much of the focus has been on academics but we mustremember the core aspect of what we provide students andfamilies.• Core of who we are and the key to our success.• Mass, prayer services, events throughout the year.• This adds to the richness and quality of our education and itis the intangible aspect of our success.• We want to continue to provide this well rounded, morallycentered education and also deal with the realities of the modernworld.

Rationale for 200-Day Calendar• Agrarian history is the basis for the 180 day calendar• Research – Quality Time in an Effective Classroom• Nativity School• Reading +24%• Math +22%• Language Arts +43%• Similar Schools Research• Public School Reality• CA lowering the required number of days to 173-175…potentiallyunder 170 with furlough days• Increasing class size, eliminating programs

Context - Technology Trends• Society• The top 10 in demand jobs in 2010 didn’t exist in 2004• New skills and even entry level positions in the future will requireadvanced technology skills• Jobs that have not been invented yet will utilize tools and skillsthat we are unaware of today• Education• Pedagogy changing dramatically – unlike other technologyrevolutions• Clayton Christensen “Disrupting Class” – by 2020, 50% of all highschool classes will be taught on line• Learn, unlearn, relearn• Handwriting will be obsolete in the future…

200-Day CalendarProfessional Development Focus:• Depth• Depth vs. Breadth• Roadmap to 200-Days of Excellence launched in August• Extremely well received by all schools• Differentiation• Remediation, Enrichment, Acceleration• STEM• Science, Technology, Engineering, Math

Finances• In general, 10% increase in tuition covers 10% increase instaff salaries• In actuality, many schools saw spikes in enrollment thatmitigated the tuition increase• Additional month of tuition for parents in many locations isless than the summer child care costs (summer camp, etc.)• Net savings for parents

200-Day CalendarStatus:• 65% of schools with some extension in 2011-12• Additional 9% of schools in 2012-13• 12% of schools are considering for 2012-13• There will be 75% of schools with extended calendars for the2012-13 and most likely the number will be greater than 80%.• LMU Research• Remains the long term vision for all schools –• The current status is very positive and hopeful

Spring 2012• K-8 Enrollment (Parish and Archdiocesan Schools only):Increased by 215 students from Fall 2011• Preschool Enrollment in K-8 Schools: 77 student increase• 78 schools at 200 days: 117 student increase from Fall to Spring• 54 schools with some increase in calendar: 62 student increasefrom Fall to Spring• 74 schools at 180 days: 36 student increase from Fall to Spring• Not usually a key recruiting time for Catholic schools• Most of the new students are coming from public and charterschools

We are not meant to sit still…• We are meant to grow and develop and improve on the giftsthat were bestowed upon us by God.• Our obligation is to reach our potential.• “No matter how much you have achieved, you are only merelygood relative to what you can become” –Jim Collins (Good toGreat),• This is what we have always strived for in Catholic schools• We don’t settle for where we are, we look to grow what we have inorder to be good stewards of what we have been entrusted tocare for. Catholic schools lead the way.

2010-2020 – A Decade of Growth• We will not survive another decade like the one we just had.• In order to change the ending and reverse the trend, weneed to have attainable, reasonable goals.• We need to have a vision of growth for our schools.• We need to stop the dialogue about ‘stemming the tide’ and‘stopping the bleeding’…we need clear goals andbenchmarks for growth in all areas.

Stimulus is Clear, Our Response?"Between stimulus and response, there is a space. Inthat space is our power to choose our response. In ourresponse lies our growth and our freedom."Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning
