The regular season champions fromthe West Division and East Division will meet on Saturday, December 1.Either ESPN or ESPN2 will televise the contest.The title game returns to Ford Field, home of the NFL’s Detroit Lions,for the fourth consecutive year. MAC Postseason OpportunitiesInternational BowlJanuary 5, 2008 • NoonRogers Centre • Toronto, OntarioThe Mid-American Conference will again send a representative to theInternational Bowl in Toronto. The second annual International Bowl isslated for noon on Saturday, January 5, 2008. The MAC representativewill face a program from the Big East at Rogers Centre at noon.The International Bowl will provide the MAC with a guaranteed thirdbowl tie-in for the second consecutive season. It is the only bowl gamescheduled for January 5.Cincinnati won the inaugural International Bowl, 27-24 over Western<strong>Michigan</strong> in <strong>2007</strong>. The Bearcats built a 24-0 second-quarter lead, onlyto have WMU tie the score at 24-24 in the fourth quarter. Kevin Lovell’s33-yard field goal with 6:11 remaining was the difference.ESPN television has partnered with the International Bowl in a multiyearagreement to broadcast the game in the US and Canada as well asprovide assistance with marketing and sponsorship sales. ESPN2 andESPN2HD will carry the 2008 International Bowl.Current members of the MAC are 2-2 all-time in bowl games againstcurrent members of the Big East. Mid-American Conference90The Mid-American ConferenceProviding leadership in education and in diversity,the Mid-American Conference moves into its 61st yearof service to the student-athlete.Since its inception in 1946, the Mid-AmericanConference has progressively grown and developedinto one of the most aggressive Division I conferencesin the country. Under the guidance of CommissionerRick Chryst, the seventh commissioner in the historyof the league, the MAC has responded to the everRick Chryst changing landscape of membership issues andmember standards in the fast-paced environment ofcollegiate athletics.In May of <strong>2007</strong>, three MAC institutions – the University of Akron, Ball StateUniversity and the University at Buffalo – were among the 10 NCAA Division I-A athleticdepartments recognized for excellence in the area of diversity. The achievements werepresented by the Laboratory for Diversity in Sport at Texas A&M University.In addition, Akron and Kent State were noted for Diversity Strategy; Akron and Toledofor African American Graduation: Female Student-Athletes; Ball State and Kent Statefor African American Graduation: Male Student-Athletes; Buffalo for Employee Diversity:Sex; and Ball State and Buffalo for Employee Diversity: Values and Attitudes.In a report issued in September of <strong>2006</strong>, the MAC had the highest percentage ofpublic institutions with a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 70 percent or above (8of 12 schools) and a GSR of 50 percent or more (12 of 12 schools). In football GSR,the MAC led all other I-A leagues as eight of the 12 schools topped the 70 percent orbetter rate. The MAC’s total of eight at 70 percent-plus accounted for 32 percent of the25 public institutions nationwide that posted 70 percent or better.MAC football produced four bowl teams in <strong>2006</strong>, the second most in leaguehistory in a single season. The <strong>2007</strong> gridiron season welcomes the addition of TempleUniversity to the East Division.MAC women’s basketball produced two firsts in <strong>2007</strong>. Bowling Green became thefirst MAC women’s basketball team to advance as far as the Sweet 16 in the NCAATournament, and Northern Illinois’ guard Stephanie Raymond became the first-everMAC player in the WNBA when she played for the Chicago Sky after being a secondround draft selection.Recent past MAC noteworthy accomplishments include that of former Kent StatePresident Dr. Carol Cartwright. TheMAC also announced a format change for both tournaments, bringing all 12 men’s andwomen’s teams to Cleveland beginning in <strong>2007</strong>. The MAC also co-hosted the <strong>2007</strong>Women’s Final Four at Quicken Loans Arena, after successfully hosting the <strong>2006</strong> NCAAWomen’s Basketball Regional at Quicken Loans Arena.In <strong>2006</strong>, Chryst also announced a new, five-year relationship with InternationalSports Properties (ISP), Inc. to oversee and coordinate the league’s marketing andsponsorship rights. ISP, which currently manages 29 college properties nationwide, isconsidered the leader in the collegiate sports marketing industry. The MAC will be ISP’sfirst conference property.ISP will be responsible for managing, and ultimately growing, the MAC’s stable ofcorporate partners, which currently stands at nine - FirstEnergy, Huntington Bank, Kraft,Marathon Oil, GMAC Financial Services, Aeropostale, Gatorade, Automart.com andSirius satellite radio. FirstEnergy has been the title sponsor for the men’s basketballtournament since its first year in Cleveland in March 2000, Kraft has been associatedwith the women’s basketball tournament since 2001, and Marathon Oil will besponsoring the football championship for the third time in <strong>2007</strong>.Based in Cleveland since July 1999 following a 15- year stay in Toledo, Ohio, theMAC has established historic measurements in both football and men’s and women’sbasketball since its move to Northeast Ohio.The Mid-American Conference was founded as a five-school league on February24, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and WesternReserve admitted as charter members. The Mid-American Conference has 12 full-timeschools and a 13th, Temple, for football only. Comprising the East Division is theUniversity of Akron (joined in 1992), Bowling Green State University (1952), Universityat Buffalo (1998), Kent State University (1951), Miami University (1947) and OhioUniversity (1946). He returned ituntouched along the Chippewa sideline.CMU stretched its lead to 21-0 on a 3-yard run by Victor Domanearly in the third quarter. Getsy found Jabari Arthur for a 16-yard scoreto get Akron on the scoreboard late in the period.A 10-yard scoring toss from Getsy to David Harvey pulled Akronwithin 21-13 midway through the fourth quarter, but Matt Domonkoshooked the extra point wide left. The CMU offense responded bycovering 71 yards on 14 plays and erasing 5:52 off the clock. Healso ran for 47 yards on 13 attempts.Andre Woodson threw three touchdown passes to stake theWildcats to a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter. LeFevour cameoff the bench in the second quarter and promptly tossed a 61-yardtouchdown pass to Damien Linson, but a LeFevour fumble set up aTony Dixon 6-yard scoring run that made it 28-7 midway through theperiod.From there, however, CMU scored on its next five possessions toclose within two points, 38-36, with 6:58 remaining in the fourthquarter. The win upped CMU’s record in the MAC to 3-0 for the firsttime since 1990.The game’s first 29 minutes were a shootout between two ofthe most promising young quarterbacks in the MAC. CMU redshirtfreshman Dan LeFevour and UT true freshman Aaron Opelt, makinghis first collegiate start, combined to complete 30-of-45 passes for357 yards and four touchdowns in the first half.Late in the half, however, it was Dan Bazuin who swung themomentum. On the third play, LeFevourtossed a swing pass to Sneed who weaved his way in for an 11-yardscore.The Chippewa defense forced a punt, and LeFevour led the offenseon a four-play, 69-yard drive that culminated in a 30-yard scoring passto Obed Cétoute. The win punched the Chippewas’ ticketto the MAC Championship Game.Marcel Archer ran for 70 yards and three touchdowns, while DanBazuin tallied eight tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles and afumble recovery.A Kelly/Shorts Stadium record crowd of 30,027 saw the Chippewasstrike first, as Dan LeFevour hooked up with Damien Linson for a 53-yard score on the third play from scrimmage to go up 7-0.Western <strong>Michigan</strong> answered on its next possession, however,marching 67 yards in 10 plays. The Huskies held a214-140 edge in total offense in the opening two quarters.Wolfe scored on runs of 10 and 2 yards, respectively, to cap NIU’sfirst two drives, while Dan Nicholson tossed a 20-yard touchdown passto David Koronkiewicz midway through the second quarter to make it21-0.The Chippewas drew no closer than 14 points in the second half.Dan LeFevour threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Ontario Sneed tomake it 21-7, and after NIU’s Chris Nendick and CMU’s Rick Albreskitraded field goals, Wolfe scored on a 13-yard run in the closingminutes.Wolfe amassed his 203 yards on 33 carries. He passed MichaelTurner to become NIU’s all-time leading rusher with 4,972 yards. Hewas named CMU’s Most Valuable Player.Ohio entered the championship game allowing just 16.2 points and291.6 yards of total offense per contest, first and second, respectively,in the MAC. CMU posted 31 points and 457 yards of offense, seasonhighsagainst OU.Dan LeFevour completed all five of his attempts as the Chippewasdented the end zone on their second possession.
