Proceed<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second p<strong>an</strong>-Europe<strong>an</strong> conference onSaproxylic BeetlesSaproxylic <strong>beetles</strong> <strong>in</strong> Brita<strong>in</strong>, <strong>an</strong> <strong>overview</strong><strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>status</strong> <strong>an</strong>d distribution <strong>of</strong> fourBiodiversity Action Pl<strong>an</strong> species.Matt N. Smith, Consult<strong>an</strong>t Ecologist, 24 Allnatt Avenue, W<strong>in</strong>nersh,Berkshire, RG41 5AU, UK.Although <strong>the</strong>re are some 700 species <strong>of</strong> <strong>saproxylic</strong> beetle found <strong>in</strong>ma<strong>in</strong>l<strong>an</strong>d Brita<strong>in</strong> (Alex<strong>an</strong>der, 2002), this presentation aims to provide<strong>an</strong> <strong>overview</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK <strong>status</strong> <strong>an</strong>d distribution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> four speciesthat are <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> this conference. These are <strong>the</strong> stagbeetle Luc<strong>an</strong>us cervus, <strong>the</strong> violet click beetle Limoniscus violaceus, <strong>the</strong>variable chafer Gnorimus variabilis <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> noble chafer G. nobilis. Thestag beetle <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> violet click beetle are to be considered onlybriefly as <strong>the</strong>se species are <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r presentations byo<strong>the</strong>r delegates, <strong>the</strong> two species <strong>of</strong> Gnorimus are discussed <strong>in</strong> moredetail. In <strong>the</strong> UK, all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>beetles</strong> are on <strong>the</strong> north-western edge<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir Europe<strong>an</strong> r<strong>an</strong>ge, <strong>an</strong>d all are <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK BiodiversityAction Pl<strong>an</strong> (UK BAP).The four species receive vary<strong>in</strong>g amounts <strong>of</strong> protection undercurrent UK legislation. The stag beetle receives partial protection,with collection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> species for sale <strong>an</strong>d/or exch<strong>an</strong>ge prohibited.The violet click beetle is fully protected, with capture, kill<strong>in</strong>g or <strong>the</strong><strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g for sale or exch<strong>an</strong>ge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> species prohibited. Protectionalso extends to <strong>the</strong> beetle’s habitat; it is <strong>an</strong> <strong>of</strong>fence to damage ordestroy a breed<strong>in</strong>g site for <strong>the</strong> species. Because <strong>of</strong> this, <strong>an</strong>yconservation or survey work likely to result <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> disturb<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>species requires a licence from English Nature. Nei<strong>the</strong>r species <strong>of</strong>Fig. 1.UK distribution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>stag beetle Luc<strong>an</strong>uscervus, PTES 1998survey data.Resolution 10kmsquare.<strong>the</strong>re are some records from south Wales <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> north-west <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>country. Dur<strong>in</strong>g 2002 PTES will be repeat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> survey <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hopethat <strong>an</strong>y ch<strong>an</strong>ges is distribution will become apparent.The violet click beetle has a very limited UK distribution (FigureTable 1 UK conservation <strong>status</strong> <strong>an</strong>d legal protection for selected <strong>saproxylic</strong>species.SPECIES UK STATUS UK LEGAL STATUSStag Beetle Nationally Scarce Partially ProtectedLuc<strong>an</strong>us cervus (Notable B) (Sale & Exch<strong>an</strong>ge only)Violet Click Beetle End<strong>an</strong>gered Fully ProtectedLimoniscus violaceus (RDB 1)Variable Chafer End<strong>an</strong>gered NoneGnorimus variabilis (RDB 1)Noble Chafer Vulnerable NoneGnorimus nobilis (RDB 2)Gnorimus receives <strong>an</strong>y statutory protection under UK legislation.Table 1 provides a summary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> current <strong>status</strong> for <strong>the</strong> fourspecies.The People’s Trust for End<strong>an</strong>gered Species (PTES) are <strong>the</strong> ‘LeadPartner’ for <strong>the</strong> stag beetle BAP. A Lead Partner is <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual ororg<strong>an</strong>isation that m<strong>an</strong>ages a BAP <strong>in</strong> conjunction with o<strong>the</strong>rorg<strong>an</strong>isations such as English Nature. In 1998, PTES org<strong>an</strong>ised <strong>the</strong>‘Great Stag Hunt’. This survey asked members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> public toreport <strong>an</strong>y sight<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> stag <strong>beetles</strong> to PTES <strong>in</strong> order to collectcurrent distribution data for <strong>the</strong> species. The survey was verysuccessful, with nearly 10,000 records be<strong>in</strong>g received. As c<strong>an</strong> be seenfrom <strong>the</strong> result<strong>in</strong>g distribution map (Figure 1), <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK <strong>the</strong> stagbeetle is broadly restricted to <strong>the</strong> south-east <strong>of</strong> Engl<strong>an</strong>d, althoughFig. 2.UK distribution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Violet Click BeetleLimoniscus violaceus.Resolution 10ksquare.2). First recorded from W<strong>in</strong>dsor Forest <strong>in</strong> 1937 when a s<strong>in</strong>gle adultwas found <strong>in</strong> a fallen Beech trunk (Allen, 1937), <strong>the</strong> species is todaystill very scarce <strong>an</strong>dcurrently only known fromthree UK localities.Of <strong>the</strong> four species underconsideration here, <strong>the</strong>species with <strong>the</strong> mostrestricted UK distribution is<strong>the</strong> variable chafer Gnorimusvariabilis (pictured right).There© People’s Trust for End<strong>an</strong>gered Species, 2003 All rights reserved.
