that <strong>car</strong> <strong>shar<strong>in</strong>g</strong> users are good <strong>and</strong> reliable customers <strong>in</strong> the <strong>public</strong> <strong>transport</strong>. Among theresults are the follow<strong>in</strong>g:• The average <strong>car</strong> <strong>shar<strong>in</strong>g</strong> user reduce annual <strong>car</strong> driv<strong>in</strong>g by 32 % from on average 5800km/year to 4000 km/year. This reflects large differences among the different users. 60 %<strong>of</strong> all exist<strong>in</strong>g users drove less than 2500 km before membership <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>creased theirannual driv<strong>in</strong>g slightly to about 2400 km/year. On the other h<strong>and</strong> the 9 %, who drovemore than 20.000 km/year before membership, have reduced the average annual <strong>car</strong>driv<strong>in</strong>g from 26.0000 km/year to 12.600 km/year s<strong>in</strong>ce they became <strong>car</strong> <strong>shar<strong>in</strong>g</strong> users.• 5 % <strong>of</strong> the exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>car</strong> <strong>shar<strong>in</strong>g</strong> users who never have had a <strong>car</strong> – 38 % <strong>of</strong> all users –would alternatively have sold their <strong>car</strong> if <strong>car</strong> <strong>shar<strong>in</strong>g</strong> had been no option, while additionally19 % say that <strong>car</strong> <strong>shar<strong>in</strong>g</strong> have made them postpone buy<strong>in</strong>g a <strong>car</strong>. 32 % answered“maybe”. The possibility <strong>of</strong> becom<strong>in</strong>g a member <strong>of</strong> a <strong>car</strong><strong>shar<strong>in</strong>g</strong> organisation have had alarge or some <strong>in</strong>fluence on the decision not to have a <strong>car</strong> for 50 % <strong>of</strong> all users.• 55 % <strong>of</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>car</strong> <strong>shar<strong>in</strong>g</strong> users <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Copenhagen</strong> metropolitan area are former <strong>car</strong>owners.• 29 % <strong>of</strong> all former <strong>car</strong> owners got rid <strong>of</strong> their <strong>car</strong> <strong>in</strong> relation to sign<strong>in</strong>g up as a member <strong>of</strong>a <strong>car</strong> <strong>shar<strong>in</strong>g</strong> organisation or shortly before or afterwards.• 6 % <strong>of</strong> all <strong>car</strong> <strong>shar<strong>in</strong>g</strong> users use the membership as an alternative to a second <strong>car</strong> <strong>in</strong> thehousehold.• Car <strong>shar<strong>in</strong>g</strong> users have generally not reduced their use <strong>of</strong> <strong>public</strong> <strong>transport</strong> aftermembership. On the contrary former <strong>car</strong> owners have <strong>in</strong>creased their use <strong>of</strong> <strong>public</strong><strong>transport</strong> significantly.• Ma<strong>in</strong> reasons for membership are convenience <strong>in</strong> not hav<strong>in</strong>g to th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>of</strong> the ma<strong>in</strong>tenance <strong>of</strong>a <strong>car</strong> <strong>and</strong> sav<strong>in</strong>g money. Environmental reasons as such are important to a slight majority<strong>of</strong> all users, but is not a dom<strong>in</strong>ant motivation for membership. However, <strong>car</strong> <strong>shar<strong>in</strong>g</strong> seemsto be especially attractive to people who would otherwise – if <strong>car</strong> <strong>shar<strong>in</strong>g</strong> was no option –would by an old vehicle. This <strong>in</strong>dicates another important environmental effect.A promis<strong>in</strong>g prospect for the future is the possibility that further spread <strong>of</strong> <strong>car</strong> <strong>shar<strong>in</strong>g</strong> – whichwould benefit the environment – may be motivated by commercial motivations <strong>of</strong> <strong>public</strong><strong>transport</strong> operators, s<strong>in</strong>ce the <strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>of</strong> <strong>public</strong> <strong>transport</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>car</strong> <strong>shar<strong>in</strong>g</strong> seem to holdgood potential <strong>of</strong> reta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g exist<strong>in</strong>g passengers as well as attract<strong>in</strong>g new customers <strong>in</strong> timesotherwise characterised by rais<strong>in</strong>g <strong>car</strong> owner ship. This goes for <strong>Copenhagen</strong> city center aswell, where 1/3 <strong>of</strong> all households now own a <strong>car</strong> compared to 1/5 ten years ago.The Greater <strong>Copenhagen</strong> Authority will early November 2005 decide on whether to cont<strong>in</strong>uethe dialogue with the <strong>car</strong> <strong>shar<strong>in</strong>g</strong> operators.* * * * *

The Greater <strong>Copenhagen</strong> Authority decided on 1 st November 2005:‣ … to cont<strong>in</strong>ue the exist<strong>in</strong>g co-operation with the <strong>car</strong> <strong>shar<strong>in</strong>g</strong> providers <strong>of</strong> the region“aim<strong>in</strong>g for concrete measures, which may impede ris<strong>in</strong>g <strong>car</strong> ownership <strong>and</strong> therebycontribute to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g exist<strong>in</strong>g passengers <strong>in</strong> <strong>public</strong> <strong>transport</strong> <strong>and</strong> attract newcustomers”.‣ to <strong>in</strong>vite the other <strong>public</strong> <strong>transport</strong> operators to take part <strong>in</strong> the co-operation.Later <strong>in</strong> November 2005 a jo<strong>in</strong>t market<strong>in</strong>g group with representatives from the national railwaycompany, the metro operator <strong>in</strong> <strong>Copenhagen</strong> <strong>and</strong> the Greater <strong>Copenhagen</strong> Authority decidedto enter a dialogue with regional <strong>car</strong> <strong>shar<strong>in</strong>g</strong> operators <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Copenhagen</strong> region.A round table meet<strong>in</strong>g gather<strong>in</strong>g representatives from all <strong>public</strong> <strong>transport</strong> operators <strong>and</strong> <strong>car</strong><strong>shar<strong>in</strong>g</strong> operators <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Copenhagen</strong> region is planned to be convened early 2006.
