BEsT cArBON.

We’ve been building our own carbon frames since 1991. Back then,

nobody else was building reliable carbon structures, because

nobody else knew how. Trek figured it out. We hired aerospace

engineers, materials scientists, carbon experts, and we pushed

the boundaries of what could be done with a bicycle frame.

Since 1991, no one has built more carbon frames than Trek. No one

has as many engineers and researchers dedicated to carbon fiber

product. We started out as pioneers, and we’re still the

undisputed industry leader.

There are lots of carbon frames on the market today, many from

companies with no expertise who simply order up carbon frames

with their name on them. But there’s a big difference between

those frames and a Trek.

Case in point: we've pioneered a higher standard of lab testing,

because we believe the industry baseline CPSC and CEN

standards aren't nearly enough. So we developed our own tests,

to push the limits of what’s possible.

That’s a lot of trouble, which is probably why no one else does it.

But we gladly spend the time and effort, because experience tells

us it leads to the best product, period.

Of course, facility testing only gets you so far. So once the lab

coats sign off on a frame, we go ride it ourselves. Hard. For days,

weeks, months, sometimes years. All before it ever shows up in

the bike shop.

Oclv MOUNTAIN Is

TOUghEr cArBON.

New for 2011 is OCLV Mountain, a leading-edge technology that

makes our OCLV (Optimum Compaction, Low Void) Carbon

less susceptible to damage from rocks and trail debris. Like all

Trek Carbon technologies, OCLV Mountain started with a simple

initiative: make it better.

Standard carbon shows its weakness on the trail when rocks kick

up at high speed and compromise the frame. That’s common

knowledge, but there hasn’t been a standard trail-debris testing

procedure—so we developed our own: the Anvil Strike Test. Strike

the frame with a sharp, heavy object at speeds most riders will

never achieve, and check the result.

/ CARbON ARmOR

Sometimes you need a little extra protection, so our Trail and

All-Mountain bikes get a light, tough external shield. Our Carbon

Armor polymer shield adds reassurance to riders who know their

downtube is bound to take some abuse.

With this test as our guide, we developed OCLV Mountain

Carbon, a combination of advanced materials and a unique

fabrication process focused on increasing resistance to damage.

Other full suspension systems firm up under braking. Active

Braking Pivot (ABP) allows your suspension to remain active,

whether you’re pedaling, coasting, or braking. This means your

bike performs as it was intended, all the time.

When your suspension stays active under braking, you stay in

control. You can brake later in a turn, maintain better rear wheel

traction in stutter bumps, and most importantly, go faster.

Try it on any other system: find a downhill with stutter bumps.

Apply the brakes and feel the suspension stiffen. Often, your rear

wheel will skip across the top of the bumps. Now try it with an

ABP Race offers all the performance characteristics of

and love, but now with multiple wheel interface options.

sUspENsION

Trek knows suspension. We have two research facilities, one

in California and one in Wisconsin, dedicated to suspension

development. Just as important: we know what great-riding bikes

feel like. Our technical know-how and our love of the ride keep us

at the forefront of suspension innovation.

/ DrCv is Two shoCks in onE

We developed Dual Rate Control Valve (DRCV) with Fox to

capitalize on the strengths and address the drawbacks of

traditional air shocks.

Standard air canister shocks pedal efficiently and are great

for racing XC, but they don’t offer the full big-hit control trail

riders need.

Large-volume air shocks offer great big-hit control, but don’t

pedal as efficiently as many trail riders demand.

DRCV combines the benefits of both shocks—great pedaling

efficiency and awesome big-hit control.

1) SAG + SmALL bumPS / DRCV is supple and controlled

like any other Fox RP2 or RP23 rear shock at sag and

over small bumps.

2) mIDSIzE bumPS / This is where DRCV really shines.

At 50% compression, the shock opens up more air

volume. Where other shocks wallow and stick, DRCV

offers seamless control through the nastiest terrain

you can find.

3) FINISh / Throughout the final stages of compression,

DRCV behaves like a larger-volume air shock.

4) RETuRN / As the shock returns to its idle state, the

shock closes the secondary air chamber to return to

its small-bump compliance.

Most suspension systems attach the shock to a moving

linkage at the top, and a fixed frame mount on the bottom.

Full Floater attaches the shock to two moving linkage

points, giving the shock increased ability to respond to

bumps across a wide variety of terrain.

Our open collaboration with Fox Racing Shox and our

extensive development time allow a higher degree of

tuning. Each individual bike platform and suspension

design has specific needs—and because we work so

Everyone loves the high-speed stability of 29ers, but a

common criticism of big-wheel bikes has been their sleepy

steering. To overcome this shortcoming, Gary worked

with our suspension partners to develop 29er-specific

G2 Geometry. G2 29ers feature a proprietary 51mm

offset fork to improve handling in tight, twisty singletrack

without compromising high-speed stability. It’s the best of

both worlds.

In downhill racing, heroes are made and titans toppled in hundredths of a second. With such razor-thin margins,

every detail is critical. So on August 8, 2009, we teamed our most seasoned aerodynamics engineers with Trek

World Racing, and made cycling history by testing downhill athlete Tracy Moseley and her Session 88 at the

San Diego Low Speed Wind Tunnel.

Our groundbreaking research revealed that with the right changes, a redesigned frame could finish up to

2 seconds faster over a 3-minute run.

The downtube is a downhill bike's most exposed element, so we applied our
