One of the shops ofthe reconstructed Stoa of Attalos in Athens housesa selection of the commercial containers found, whole or in fragments,in and about the ancient market place of Athens. These large,plain, two-handled clay jars (I) were called by ancient Greeks andRomans ‘amphoras’ though they had also other names in both Greeceand Italy; this word, used also in French and Italian, is familiar nowadaysfrom the reports of Captain Cousteau (The Silent World) andother divers describing the wreckcd ancient cargoes found at the bottomof the sea off the coasts of southern France and northern Italy.Probably most of these large amphoras were made for the transportand storage of wine, though many were used for oil, preserved fish,pitch and other moist substances, including water.There is a variety of shapes, but they havc in common a mouthnarrow enough to be corked, two opposite vertical handles and atbottom usually a tip or knob (2) which serves as a third handle, below2.
