A national radio and television broadcaster that began as a<br />

youth radio station <strong>in</strong> 1989 and has s<strong>in</strong>ce expanded to become<br />

one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> news services and television broadcasters<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> country. 12 Its primary audience is largely urban,<br />

young and it is associated with liberal political views. 13<br />

Its onl<strong>in</strong>e news service receives on average 200,000 visitors<br />

Blic is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most popular tabloid newspapers <strong>in</strong> Serbia<br />

with a circulation <strong>of</strong> 120,000. 15 It was founded <strong>in</strong> 1996<br />

by a group <strong>of</strong> Austrian bus<strong>in</strong>essmen and is currently owned<br />

by <strong>the</strong> company R<strong>in</strong>gier, which also owns tabloids around<br />

<strong>the</strong> world. 16 Its name means “flash” <strong>in</strong> Serbian and although<br />

it has slightly more <strong>in</strong>-depth coverage than <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r tabloids,<br />

its format rema<strong>in</strong>s focused on quick, attentiongrabb<strong>in</strong>g<br />

news.<br />

FINDINGS:<br />

2011 was a very eventful year when it came to issues concern<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> EU’s relationship with Serbia and has thus provided<br />

many news stories covered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> country’s domestic<br />

media. The key issues were those surround<strong>in</strong>g Serbia’s<br />

prospects for receiv<strong>in</strong>g candidate status, Kosovo, and EU’s<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ancial crisis.<br />

Candidate Status<br />

The major topic regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> relationship between <strong>the</strong> EU<br />

and Serbia has been that <strong>of</strong> Serbia’s hopes for candidate<br />
