o In September, tension rose aga<strong>in</strong> after Serbs set up<br />

barricades on major roads <strong>in</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn Kosovo. 31<br />

o The barricades rema<strong>in</strong>ed despite calls from Serbia’s<br />

president, Boris Tadic, to remove <strong>the</strong>m. There were<br />

several attempts <strong>in</strong> October at remov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> barricades<br />

by force by EULEX troops. 32<br />

o By <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year, some barricades rema<strong>in</strong>ed,<br />

some were torn down, and new ones were still put<br />

up. 33 By <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> 2011, this situation had not been<br />

resolved and <strong>the</strong> tension <strong>in</strong> Kosovo contributed to<br />

Serbia’s failure to receive candidate status <strong>in</strong> December<br />

as it had hoped.<br />

The Eurozone Crisis<br />

One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> major topics covered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> media throughout<br />

2011 has been <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial crisis <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> EU. The events<br />

covered have generally been <strong>the</strong> same major events covered<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational media. However, some reports<br />

have also covered some specific aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> crisis, such<br />

as one article discuss<strong>in</strong>g how, while most European countries<br />

have experienced a decl<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>the</strong> German economy has<br />

grown and even pr<strong>of</strong>ited as <strong>the</strong> article suggests, from a<br />

weak euro. 34<br />

- With<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> media, <strong>the</strong> Eurozone crisis has triggered various<br />

reports <strong>of</strong> what <strong>the</strong> crisis could mean for Serbia’s EU<br />

future. The crisis has sparked <strong>the</strong> question <strong>of</strong> whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong><br />

EU will even want to enlarge given its difficult situation. 35<br />

- Ano<strong>the</strong>r aspect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eurozone crisis covered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> media<br />

was its effect on Serbia’s economy. Many news stories<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ted out that Serbia was by no means unaffected by<br />

<strong>the</strong> crisis s<strong>in</strong>ce its economy is so <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> European<br />
