One who makes don<strong>at</strong>ions of monetary value andor dedic<strong>at</strong>ion of time.This is something we see often among those involvedin <strong>the</strong> “Sport of Kings”, <strong>Polo</strong>.The PlayersMobile had its first <strong>Polo</strong> team as early as <strong>the</strong>1930’s. Its headquarters was <strong>the</strong> Bit & Spur Stablesloc<strong>at</strong>ed beyond The Mobile Country Club. Some of <strong>the</strong>members of <strong>the</strong> team included Ed Merkle, Gilbert Burton,“Poochie” LaGarde, Frances H. Inge, Charles Boykin,John T Cochran and J.P. Altmayer.The Big Bill <strong>Polo</strong> Players of Mobile were startedby Bill Meador and <strong>the</strong> Calvin Dunn in 1964. They playedcowboy polo r<strong>at</strong>her than English style and <strong>at</strong>tended WorldCowboy <strong>Polo</strong> in Albuquerque, New Mexico where <strong>the</strong>ywon several trophies.22In 1970 Ed Bernard, a New Iberia, La., transplantin Mobile, interested Kenny McLean, George Radcliffand Herndon Radcliff, III, in forming <strong>the</strong> Mobile-<strong>Point</strong>Clear <strong>Polo</strong> Club. O<strong>the</strong>rs joined <strong>the</strong> group such as DrAlbert Corte, Wilson Green, Pete Sintz, Richard Cobb,Jeff Bernard, Greer Radcliff, Sam Meador, Bill Houghand Jack Friend. The group elected McLean as presidentand sole officer. Bernard acted as tournament chairmanand deleg<strong>at</strong>e to <strong>the</strong> United St<strong>at</strong>es <strong>Polo</strong> Associ<strong>at</strong>ion Games.There has been no interruption of <strong>Polo</strong> in<strong>the</strong> Mobile-<strong>Point</strong> Clear area since 1970. In <strong>Point</strong> Clear, polom<strong>at</strong>ches were played <strong>at</strong> Lakewood Grand Hotel field,Cow Pen field off Hwy 32, and Ed Bernard’s Silverhillfield. Then in 1980, Kenny McLean built <strong>the</strong> field onHwy 32 named “The <strong>Point</strong> Clear <strong>Polo</strong> Club”. Today weare enjoying one of <strong>the</strong> fields owned by Dawn & CurtisPilot and Kim & Chip Campbell known as <strong>the</strong> Sonny Hill–Clearw<strong>at</strong>er <strong>Polo</strong> Complex, which is <strong>the</strong> property where“Red”- Frank L Le<strong>at</strong>herbury established “Clearw<strong>at</strong>erStables” home to gre<strong>at</strong> thoroughbred race horses, (evenhad a Kentucky Derby winner). Games are also played<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sonny Hill Farms <strong>Polo</strong> Field on Pierce Rd andFaulkner <strong>Polo</strong> field on Hwy 48. These Players not onlyhave expenses to maintain <strong>the</strong>ir 6- 8 horses, tack, trailers,transport and grooms, some pay for professionals to playin games, so when <strong>the</strong>y particip<strong>at</strong>e in charity events it istime, talent and monetary commitment.Kenny McLean anddaughter, Sadie - 1980’s23Fans Supporting TheirFavorite PlayersThe VolunteersNewspaper articles and history buffs talk of <strong>Polo</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ches played to benefit different charities. To do so<strong>the</strong> players, <strong>the</strong>ir spouses, friends and families formedcommittees and l<strong>at</strong>er organiz<strong>at</strong>ions for <strong>the</strong> sole purposeof raising money for charity. With <strong>the</strong> passion of how<strong>the</strong>y could help o<strong>the</strong>rs always being <strong>the</strong> driving forceof giving, volunteers committed tireless hours of yearround organizing, planning and administering <strong>the</strong> events.Tournament m<strong>at</strong>ches have been held in such places as;Lakewood/Grand Hotel polo field, <strong>Point</strong> Clear <strong>Polo</strong> Club,Sonny Hill-Clearw<strong>at</strong>er <strong>Polo</strong> Complex in <strong>Point</strong> Clear;Celeste Field and Mobile Airport Field in Mobile. Today’sm<strong>at</strong>ch is hosted by <strong>Point</strong> Clear Charities, Inc.Last year a celebr<strong>at</strong>ion of 20 years and a PlayersHall of Fame was cre<strong>at</strong>ed, to thank <strong>the</strong> original players for<strong>the</strong>ir dedic<strong>at</strong>ion to polo and charity.
